2019 MLB Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Indians select Yordys Valdes in Round 2

Still 17, lstarts out at SS but he certainly looks like a guy who is going to grow out of there eventually. Elite defender right now, just think there may be more projection in his frame.

Switch hitter, high upside right in line with the Indians recent history.

Freeman, Rocchio and now Valdes. Some seriously intriguing SS prospects in the system.

.... And Gabriel Rodriguez and/or Junior Sanquintin might end up being better than all of them.

FanGraphs Day 1 Review:

Holy crap the Diamondbacks had a ton of day one picks.

Imagine if this were the NFL? 7 picks in the first 2 rounds, wow that would be fun, lol.

We should have had several picks too...but not only were the Dolan's cheap on signing anyone...they didn't even offer the Qualifying offers to get draft pick compensation in the fear players would actually sign them

MLB needs to rip up the QO requirement for compensation

Sticking with their mindset the last few years, expect them to grab at least 1 or 2 of the higher ranking guys that have fallen in the draft for signing concerns today. They will almost certainly underslot Valdes.

Yeah man, screw the Dolans for not offering a 1 year $18m to Andrew Miller and Cody Allen. That certainly wouldn't have been massively overpaying for 2 players who looked absolutely washed last year.

Thus why the QO requirement needs ripped up and teams need to be compensated for losing players alone

Dolans aren't cheap, they just aren't over spenders. We were 17th in revenue last year, 19th in payroll this year. Its right in line. They aren't like our other 2 owners who will lose money to win a championship,. We are spoiled a bit in that right.

We had 282 million in revenue, the yankees by comparison 662 million. Baseball economics is to blame, not the Dolans. Yes I would love a multi Billionaire obsessed with winning in Cleveland to buy the Indians, but that isn't the norm in sports, its the exception. I really wish we would start to auto ban people for a week that keep calling the Dolan's cheap, it just ignores so many facts and is such a low brow way of looking at things. It really is horrible thinking and shows such a lack of understanding facts of baseball economics.

3rd round - Joseph Naranjo 1B -

Ruben S. Ayala High School in Chino Hills, Calif., has had some pro prospects grace its field, but it's been a while. There have been a pair of second-round picks from the school, including Ryan Mount in 2005, but Mount was actually the last player drafted from the school. Naranjo, perhaps the best bat in the area, should end the dry stretch. While he isn't the biggest or most projectable guy in the world, the six-foot Naranjo can really hit. He's one of the better pure hitters among the high school set in the country and proved that during the summer showcase circuit. The left-handed hitter can hit lefties, should continue to hit for average as perhaps a future plus hitter and should get to at least Major League average power, with over-the-fence pop showing up well during his senior season. He's a bit limited beyond the bat, though he plays above his speed on the basepaths with good instincts and is a solid defender at first. Some think that he could play an outfield corner, with an arm that touches the upper 80s on the mound. To profile at first or right field, there will be more pressure on Naranjo to develop into a true run-producing type of hitter. The Cal State Fullerton commit's offensive potential could get him drafted in the top five or six rounds.

Kinda surprised at 3 prep players in a row

I suppose that would be good in theory. Not sure how much compensation that Indians should have received for losing Miller and Allen though based off their 2018 performance.

I'm mainly bitter about getting nothing for Brantley. And both of them would have probably gotten you 2nd round compensation

Some similarities between Naranjo and Bo Naylor as pre-draft guys. Naranjo just doesn’t have Naylor’s power profile.

Again, they are all about tools right now. I really like how they’ve been navigating these last 3 drafts.

Seems like another potential underslot guy too. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them take another higher ranked prep arm if they feel they’ve saved money on their last 2 picks.
