2019 MLB Postseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
To me it was obviously the correct call. Precisely the reason for the rule. It happened to the Indians in a playoff game - I don't remember the year or exact situation but my feeble brain thinks it was against the Yankees. That's when I learned the rule.

When the ball is between the catcher and the pitcher, the first baseman is taught to keep their left foot in the bag (regardless fo what hand they are) without stretching.

It's a tighter window to throw through, and standing that way provides a larger target.

Got it.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "reason for the rule"?

The runner ran in a completely straight line from home to first and he never deviated from his path. That should be legal. Why should it fall on the runner to get out of the way of the fielder? This is the only time I can think of in baseball when it falls on the runner to change his path.

Furthermore the enforcement rate of this is pretty much 0. It seems as though a rule that is almost never enforced shouldnt just be randomly up held in game 6 of the world series

The dude ran in a straight line. He even kind of corrected himself as well. Was a horse shit call that bailed out a terrible throw. What an embarrassment on the biggest stage in baseball. I saw a picture of Altuve last night actually being in the way running to first.

Absolutely terrible call....subjectively.

If I was AJ Hinch I'd protest the game and say my team got cold.

That was Travis Fryman in IIRC the 98 ALCS. Enrique Wilson was making a mad dash around the bases to score as Knoblauch just stood at 1st pointing at Fryman.
In that case Fryman was running on the grass almost the entire way.

Turner was on the dirt running as he should. He has as much right to baseline & reaching the bag.

Uh oh....calling all softies.

PS - wasn't a fan of the retort from Soto either.

But he shouldn't and he doesn't. The lines are clearly drawn and he was outside them. It happens a lot but almost never affects the play. When it does it should be called because that's the rule. Maybe it's a stupid rule and maybe it will be changed or eliminated in the offseason but my understanding is that the runner has to run between those two lines and if 1. He doesn't, and 2. It interferes with the fielder catching the throw, he is out. It's a judgment call on 2.

I believe the umpires made the call to New York to make certain they had the rule correctly interpreted, but not to check the judgment call. IMhO, given the rule, they made the correct judgment.

PS: Thanks for the assist on the Tribe's situation. I think you're right on where each baserunner was running.

I loved Soto doing the same thing. Bregman is a cocky little guy but when it doesn’t go his way, he flips the script. He’ll apologize and try not to upset anyone. He did it to Boston in the past.

I think the only soft thing is baseball players getting so in their feelings about anyone breaking the sacred unwritten rules

He took too long to get to first base, time to hurt someone who had nothing to do with it!!!

yeah.. Mad Max is battling & Grienke finally is looking like an ace again (after being very mortal throughout this postseason)
Greinke has looked great and Scherzer has been a little shaky. But, the Astros have squandered several scoring chances. I am sure they are hoping it doesn’t come back to bite them.
