When the ball is between the catcher and the pitcher, the first baseman is taught to keep their left foot in the bag (regardless fo what hand they are) without stretching.
It's a tighter window to throw through, and standing that way provides a larger target.
Not sure I understand what you mean by "reason for the rule"?To me it was obviously the correct call. Precisely the reason for the rule. It happened to the Indians in a playoff game - I don't remember the year or exact situation but my feeble brain thinks it was against the Yankees. That's when I learned the rule.

The runner ran in a completely straight line from home to first and he never deviated from his path. That should be legal. Why should it fall on the runner to get out of the way of the fielder? This is the only time I can think of in baseball when it falls on the runner to change his path.
Furthermore the enforcement rate of this is pretty much 0. It seems as though a rule that is almost never enforced shouldnt just be randomly up held in game 6 of the world series
That was Travis Fryman in IIRC the 98 ALCS. Enrique Wilson was making a mad dash around the bases to score as Knoblauch just stood at 1st pointing at Fryman. To me it was obviously the correct call. In that case Fryman was running on the grass almost the entire way.
Turner was on the dirt running as he should. He has as much right to baseline & reaching the bag.
Uh oh....calling all softies.
PS - wasn't a fan of the retort from Soto either.
I think the only soft thing is baseball players getting so in their feelings about anyone breaking the sacred unwritten rules

yeah.. Mad Max is battling & Grienke finally is looking like an ace again (after being very mortal throughout this postseason)Anyone else watching?
Greinke has looked great and Scherzer has been a little shaky. But, the Astros have squandered several scoring chances. I am sure they are hoping it doesn’t come back to bite them.yeah..
