2019 MLB Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’d rather get a better player for a lesser prospect.

You would know better than I do about the ceiling of minor league players. My suggestion was simply younger, sub top 150 minor leaguer for a Giants setup man and Pablo to DH, since they still seem dedicated to selling non-essential veterans.

Indians tend to be more in the market for expiring contracts for C grade prospects.

I was told they will not be buying, so I’m sticking with that for now.

Were that to change, or if Sandoval were their target, I’m confident they would be more in the market for a Sandoval for Oscar Gonzalez or Will Benson swap.

They’ve invested too much into that young core of prospects to chase a budget hitter and set up man for a run like this.

Oh I completely misunderstood your post.

I think Luplow has more value on the roster than Sandoval would.

I also wouldn't be moving Valera for a bullpen arm.

Yeah, Valera is rocketing up prospect rankings. Made me double take.

This explanation makes much more sense.

I still think we could do better than Sandoval and a Giants reliever, even for C level prospects.

Yep, I am limited in knowing who is a rising minor league prospect from this time last year and who is stuck in neutral. I like watching a MLB game here or there, I'm not a junkie with baseball prospects.

I do hope the Indians take the bat off their shoulder if they keep winning like this in the next two weeks. If this is the last year of their current stars before free agency, give them the message at a low cost that this season matters.

Actually, we still have everyone locked up through at least next year.

Also, if we keep winning, I’m not sure what more we really need to add. A DH or LF would be nice, but maybe Daniel Johnson could come up and fill that role at some point.

If José is back, and I’m thinking he’s back, that plugs a huge hole in the lineup. If he continues this past month’s production, we’re going to win 100 games.

So suddenly Plesac is a critical member of the team?

I'd happily see a legit setup man and Sandoval come in for that iffy last spot and a guy like Luplow optioned for a mid-level 18 year old who is three years away like George Valera.

The Indians aren’t trading George Valera unless it’s for a current MVP contender under multiple years of control. The kid is going to be skyrocketing up the top prospects chart in baseball over the next few years.

People keep talking about the Indians being buyers or sellers. They were sellers this offseason, so I don't see anyway possible they become buyers now just because they can win the division.

It sucks, but this front office doesn't seem like the type to change their minds after half a season of baseball.

I wish they'd be buyers and just go for it. But, that's not in the cards.

I'm just gonna keep enjoying Lindor while I can, of course.

Huh? What has happened that would make you call this front office stubborn, set in their ways, or resistant to change? They might be the most flexible, progressive front office in baseball.

I'd also like you to elaborate more on how the Indians were sellers this offseason. What specific moves were the front office "selling" as in they didn't think they could contend, rather than just improving the team?

I'm aware, I follow the team. Do you really feel the position he was supposed to cover - namely DH and first/third depth was adequately replaced? I really like Freeman as a utility guy, but they could use some pop. How you feel about Pablo and Slater is subjective, I think they could contribute to a team trying to push into the post-season.

All that said, we agree the meat of the deal would be one of those relievers. Bring home Will Smith.

As for Mr. Hamill, we post in English here, sir. We Also don't communicate in strawman arguments. Please rephrase if you want a response and I will return in kind.

First let me apologize ... should have been then not hen ... as much as I can tell that takes care of English concerns

Strawman?
My point is simple ... who goes to the bench or down ... you say Luplow - we have hurt for a right hand bat - it makes zero sense to move somebody that crushes lefties

It is not strawman to say if one or two come in one or two must leave ... you say Allen - okay Sandoval replaces him .. now where does he play - I would rather have Allen

Also chemistry is important ... I am not alone in feeling that Donaldson may have been a mistake last season and he is notably better than Sandoval or Panik

I say stand pat

Of course the most attractive assets the Giants have are the MLB tested pitchers. Even a guy like Samardzija could be an asset if the Indians can convince the Giants to swallow most of the money owed on that bad contract.

For hitting, I'm sure they would attach Pablo Sandoval to a pitcher as a utility infielder and DH. The oft-injured Joe Panik is probably a available as defensive and offensive depth for an infield. Young OF Austin Slater changed his swing in the past year and has been on a tear since being promoted from the minors.

Sam Dyson from them would be my target and Slater wouldn't be bad either to be honest, but would they be willing to give him up? Technically Slater knows how to play 1B, 2B 3B, and all 3 OF positions, but none of them super welll, but he is a good fit for a Francona type of coach and has team control. I kind of like a deal for Dyson and Slater, but what would it cost?

To be honest @AZ_ @Derek what would you be willing to give up for a Slater and Dyson trade. I don't see it commanding the farm and it hits two need since it gives us an utility guy/DH guy who has control in the pros long term and Dyson has one more year on his contract. Not the glamour RH bat that I would like at the end of the day, but I actually think he fits some of what we need. Kipnis isn't great at hitting LH, and Freeman doesn't have a good history of it either. Also puts another RH bat on the roster, which we don't have with some position flexibility.

Edit: Do you think a Yu Chang and maybe a couple of A ball prospects would be enough to get Dyson and Slater?

I believe Tyler Clippard is the only player on the entire roster that would be a free agent after this season.

Kipnis and Oliver Perez as well. Not sure the status of Mike Freeman. And the Indians could probably bring all of those guys back, if they'd like. Don't think Kipnis is going to have much of a market; Perez and Clippard had super limited markets last year and will be 38 and 35 by Opening Day next year.

Regardless, there aren't any looming major losses, like Santana and Brantley the past 2 years.

Kipnis has a 16 mil contract with a buyout option. Freeman isnt even arbitration eligible yet (He hasn't even gotten one year of MLB playing time). Perez I believe has a vesting option if he hits 55 games this season (He is at 38, so good probability it happens). Otero has a club option year as well. So at the moment, our current projected 25 man roster if everyone was healthy, we can have next season as well. We don't even need to make any changes if we don't want to.

I think the only difference is guys running out of options, Plutko, Luplow, Goody and Anderson I believe are all out of options next season. Then we have guys currently like Mathias, Johnson, Tom etc who may be added to the 40 man roster cause of the rule 5 draft. Outside of the end of the bench and bullpen, we may see very little change in the roster. We also may bring in some veteran bats to compete with these guys, but I don't see much change overall with this roster next season. The bullpen talent coming up in 20 and 21 may be the best we have had in a long time.

Hence why I said from the get go, 2020 is the year to win it and not 19. Personally if we get someone this season, its either an older rental style of guy (aka like what we did with coco crisp), or someone with at least another year of control/years of control.
