2019 MLB Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Chapman, Merrifield I feel are almost untouchable.

What would it take to get Givens and Mancini from Baltimore ya think? Mancini can play 1st as well, so it gives us a bit of flexibility going forward since he is under control for awhile.

I don't know why they'd be untouchable. Expensive, yes, but no reason to think they're untouchable.

Some names on some poor teams which intrigue me.

While all those closers are very good and obviously would improve this team, I think it would be unwise to burn top prospects on another dominant relief arm with the state of the offense this season and in the near future. Not suggesting you were saying that.

There are unlimited pen arms to find out there.

But any deal for a closer would be supplementary to a deal for more offensive promise.

Oakland is rebuilding around Chapman, they aren't trading him unless the haul to too great to pass up, which isnt something we are even going to be willing to do. Merrifield last year got a fair amount of offers yet KC didn't budge on him, so its the same type of scenario, they are pretty close to untouchable as you can get in baseball.

I don't believe any of that is true

Whit Merrifield is as untouchable as you can get in baseball, folks.

Not sure why they wouldn't have traded him last year and then extended him this off season to a team friendly deal. I kept saying we needed to get him last year if you go look through the threads! We would have to pay way too much to get him at the end of the day.

If you're not a financial elite team in baseball, then you don't rebuild around a player--you contend when the timings line up in your organization.

The timing for the A's to contend isn't right. The A's will trade Chapman at some point before he hits the open market.

@sportscoach should probably be editing that post that states Chapman and Whit Merrifield are "pretty close to untouchable as you can get in baseball."

Will Benson, Triston McKenzie and Yu Chang for Matt Chapman. Who says no?

Oakland I think would like more since Benson doesnt have much value as one would think anymore and Triston and Chang are injured.

I actually think it would be more of Jones, Oviedo, Hentges and Haase type of deal. Even that may be low balling in a sense.

Chapman and Merrifield aren't being moved unless they get overpaid for and no one is willing to do that so I don't think my comment was wrong

Definitely Oakland. There are still serious questions about Benson, and I’m not sure if Chang’s ceiling is much more than league average.

Chapman is a going to be a perennial gold glover, his bat continues to improve, and he still has 1-1/2 years of team control before even hitting arbitration. It would take a hell of a haul

Ain’t nobody calling about Will Benson, fam.

Didn't realize Benson's value had plummeted so much. What's a realistic asking price for Chapman then? Nolan Jones, McKenzie, and 2 more mid-level prospects?

Probably about right.

Maybe a big league caliber player in there with two elite prospects.

In your opinion, what are this team's biggest holes, and how would you like to fill them?

My take:
  1. DH. The biggest hole on this offense, and perhaps the easiest to fill, is a big stick at the DH spot. There should be a lot of bats on non-contending teams to pick from. Maybe at the top of the list is Joey Gallo, who still has 3 years of arbitration left, is OPS'ing at 1.050 and has a career high OBP of .411. Other top options for this spot would be Vogelbach, Mancini, or perhaps bringing back Shin Soo Choo or Edwin Encarnacion. I think that giving Bobby Bradley MLB at bats this season is a potential internal solution.
  2. Outfield. We have so much depth, but very little quality right now. Martin, Zimmer, Allen, Luplow, Bauers, Mercado... I'd love to see CarGo and Naquin be done with this organization, and instead just sort through the rest of these guys to figure out 2 positions. I want to go get a third OF to play every day. This is a bit harder to fill, but Gallo and Mancini are both repeat options here. The Mets have a bunch of intriguing guys I'd be calling about. Seattle has Haniger and Santana. Another potential move would be something like going all-in on Matt Chapman, and moving Jose back to LF rather than moving him to second base. I really wish we were able to sign McCutcheon or Adam Jones... not sure we'd be having this discussion if one of those guys was in the outfield for us every day.
  3. Bullpen. Here's where I'm willing to go dumpster diving. Our bullpen has been good, but come playoff time, you can never have enough weapons back there. I'd love to see some of our internal options get MLB time--but I'd also be on board bringing in some bullpen arms from teams that are out of the running
