2019 NFL offseason thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, I mean, if you read the Twitter thread I don’t think the author disagrees with you.

Passes are worth more YPA than rushes. Interceptions and fumbles are equally likely. In a vacuum, passing makes more sense. But, we don’t live in a vacuum, and there are absolutely situations when running or a drop off to a RB makes more sense.

EX: Tom Brady is the best short yardage passer in NFL history. For him, having good pass catching RBs is absolutely crucial.

I just think this guy was referring, specifically, to the Cowboys. And I thought it was interesting data.

I’m excited about the Browns because Chubb was averaging ~5 yards per attempt and faces more full boxes than the grand majority of teams in the league. Given our offense now, though, my guess is that number decreases significantly. Chubb is one of a very small number of guys where running up the middle is a smart play.

I also think that, as defenses get faster and smaller, big power guys like Chubb, Zeke, Gurley, etc. will be increasingly valuable.

Good post, you covered a lot of what I wanted to say on the subject. I think the main difference between how successful quarterbacks use passes to running backs and middling quarterbacks use them is intention. You cited Brady as one of the best short pass throwers, but so much of that is by design - the running back is really the only designed receiver in most of those plays. Brees uses his running backs the same way - it's essentially a sweep. The key is that quick wheel route passes like those stretch a defense horizontally along the line of scrimmage. The best quarterbacks are manipulating the defense horizontally to attack them later in another area of the defense.

Think back to how Tyrod used short passes under Haley to how Baker used short passes under Kitchens. One guy dumped the ball off to escape pressure when nothing else was open. The other guy moved the chains with short passes in order to set up an "out pitch" down the field.

I think that intention contributes to the lack of mistakes, too. When was the last time you saw Brady or Brees make a mistake on a short yardage throw? It does not happen. Intention probably plays a role because, if you are just throwing to escape pressure, you're more likely to make a bad pass. But, when the short throws are by design and intention, it's much easier to control for potential mistakes.

Looks like the Chiefs have a need at WR.

Really looked like Tyreek was going to basically get out of this one when the local prosecutors made the last announcement...so much for that.

My buddy has Hill and Hunt in our dynasty league. Went from championship contender to question mark real fucking fast.

Hill is probably done. And he should be.

Hill seemed like a good, goofy guy too in interviews. I don't know if it was an act, but abusing a child is beyond messed up. He should never play in the NFL again. The Hunt thing was always blown out of proportion to me but I understand why we had to do it.

As a Chiefs fan, maybe I'm biased, but Hunt and Hill were top 3 players at their positions. Very dynamic players. This hurts a lot from the football standpoint. Knocking on the door of the Super Bowl finally and this happens. Not sure where the Chiefs stand now as a team.

On the bright side, we have Mahomes. Mahomes makes people look better, but I was hoping for another record breaking year. He should have a great year, but need to replace weapons if it's going to be huge.

Also, very glad this happened before we paid Hill, who would have gotten likely a record breaking WR deal. I question the Clark deal more now because if Clark makes one bad move, he has eyes on him ready.

And most importantly above all, hopefully the child gets saved now from the more potential abuse he would have accumulated over his childhood.

Just a reminder that Adrian Peterson beat (and likely still beats) the hell out of his children and no one talks about it anymore. His career seemed to have turned out just fine.
Peterson’s son had pushed another one of Peterson’s children off of a motorbike video game. As punishment, Peterson grabbed a tree branch – which he consistently referred to as a “switch” – removed the leaves and struck the child repeatedly.

The beating allegedly resulted in numerous injuries to the child, including cuts and bruises to the child’s back, buttocks, ankles, legs and scrotum, along with defensive wounds to the child’s hands. Peterson then texted the boy’s mother, saying that one wound in particular would make her “mad at me about his leg. I got kinda good wit the tail end of the switch.”

Peterson also allegedly said via text message to the child’s mother that he “felt bad after the fact when I notice the switch was wrapping around hitting I (sic) thigh” and also acknowledged the injury to the child’s scrotum in a text message, saying, “Got him in nuts once I noticed. But I felt so bad, n I’m all tearing that butt up when needed! I start putting them in timeout. N save the whooping for needed memories!”

In further text messages, Peterson allegedly said, “Never do I go overboard! But all my kids will know, hey daddy has the biggie heart but don’t play no games when it comes to acting right.”

According to police reports, the child, however, had a slightly different story, telling authorities that “Daddy Peterson hit me on my face.” The child also expressed worry that Peterson would punch him in the face if the child reported the incident to authorities. He also said that he had been hit by a belt and that “there are a lot of belts in Daddy’s closet.” He added that Peterson put leaves in his mouth when he was being hit with the switch while his pants were down. The child told his mother that Peterson “likes belts and switches” and “has a whooping room.”

I want to believe Hill's career is over but this is the NFL, after all.

I doubt hill his done. Sure he is a piece of shit and has lost all respect of me and so many others, but the league always gives 2nd chances.

He was already on his second chance.

sort of yes, but he hasn't been suspended a year yet, that will be the first thing that happens, take some anger management classes and domestic abuse classes.

Honestly the best thing for the world is give this man hope to still have football and force him to do something to take care of this bullshit. He is a complete piece of shit, but he has children and they need him to somehow understand he is a piece of shit and needs to change his attitude. Keeping him in football has the best chance of this happening, sure suspend him a full year, but take football away and that kid might end up dead, serious.

Some people think we should just keep Hill through a suspension and see what the NFL wants to do. Because they think we messed up on letting another team benefit on Hunt.

I don't know man. I just don't know. Not to be too cold, but it also hurts to get crap to no compensation back. I don't think he should play in the NFL again, but if the NFL is not going to indefinitely suspend him, that is their mistake. I can understand us keeping him. At least until we feel he is stable even.

He will play in the NFL again, and probably should. The NFL is where he will be able to do the most good if he can get it through his head he is an abuser.

The Dolphins are low key coming. That trade with the Cardinals for Rosen was slick. They only owe him around 6M over the next three seasons. They now have 10 picks in next year's draft too. Build up the trenches and add a playmaker or two and they could be ascending.
