2019 Rotation Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Delly was so good about making sure Dion got his points while making sure the offense kept running smoothly. That's the type of PG I'd like. I don't think Dion ever felt he wasn't the focus of the second unit because Delly barely scored. I think Craft could do the same but not many other young PG could take a backseat scoring like that to keep everyone happy. Delly had his impact felt on the defensive side of the ball.

Major props to Koby if we can find another Delly. Would be a great fit on this team, I agree.

I think Hill could do it but it seems like Lue might be thinking of starting Hill with Sexton.
I could Sexton or Hill with Hood, or Korver, or Clarkson or even JR, but not together?

If it were up to me I'd start Sexton, Hood, Cedi, Love, and Nance/Zizic. I understand why Lue wants to start Hill because he can ease Sexton into running the offense.

Im not a fan of starting JR or Korver with Sexton, I think both would put more pressure on Sexton. Sexton would have to run alot of action to get Korver his shots. I could see JR trying too hard and taking alot of bad shots because he thinks he needs to help carry the offense.

tough spot for Lue. Hill and TT will expect to start and won’t be the good soldiers helping the younger players take their minutes. They were just in the finals and are in their financial and playing primes. The reports are coming out that TT expects to breakout as a star. That means he’s gonna be taking shots away from Sexton and Cedi. Hill is playing for a new contract.

I suppose performance will sort out the logjams quickly. Dan wants to compete and it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the vets aren’t playing more winning ball.

Certain players don’t fit the categories we need (developing and young, winning players): JR and Clarkson. JR seems most likely to ride the bench without putting up a fight. Clarkson, I just don’t know. He’s the third ballhandler right? If Cedi handling the ball doesn’t work out we need Clarkson for ball handling. Hood is sort of between I think.

Anyway, if the roster remains the same.

Sexton
Hill
Cedi
Love
TT

Clarkson
Hood
Korver
Nance
Zizic

Smith
Frye

However close tt gets to becoming a star benefits us in every way. Keeping or trading.

I expect Frye to get some significant run as a floor spacer. Frye and Nance seem like complimentary pieces on paper. Could be a second unit pairing at the expense of Zizic.

I really worry about Lue giving Zizic significant minutes, because I don't think Zizic is the type of player Lue knows how to use, or believes is effective. Doesn't fit the "style" of play Lue prefers.

Tye Lue prefers that his centers be undersized, uncoordinated, unsure if they are right or left-handed, and have a name rhyming with Schmistan Schmompson.

If the Cavs are starting from scratch (without LeBron), may as well see what Lue can do with the team. It reminds me of when Mike Brown came back the second time. Didn't really know what we had in 2013, but it showed that it wasn't the same.

It also happened with Silas in 2003 and Byron Scott in 2011. They were old school coaches in a different league.

For the most part, I'd like to go back to 2011 to see if I can learn anything from the last rebuilding experience:
  1. The first two months of the 2010-11 season were partially competitive, but a small sample size (7 wins and 10 losses).
  2. Scott was playing 11-deep (6 of the players played in all 11 games during the 2010 playoffs).
    • Anderson Varejao
    • J.J. Hickson
    • Jamario Moon
    • Anthony Parker
    • Ramon Sessions
    • Mo Williams
    • Ryan Hollins
    • Antawn Jamison
    • Joey Graham
    • Jawad Williams
    • Daniel Gibson
  3. The month of December was a mess, but still featured Varejao (not injured to this point), Jamison, Hickson in the frontcourt, Moon and Gibson on the wings with Sessions and Williams in the backcourt. Despite that, they only won a game.
  4. Midway through January, Scott decided to throw the unknowns into the mix (Gee, Eyenga, Harris, and Samuels). Since they were losing 26 straight at that point.

To start this season, I think Lue will probably try using a rotation of players who tasted success during last year's playoffs.

Kevin Love
J.R. Smith
George Hill
Kyle Korver
Tristan Thompson
Larry Nance
Jordan Clarkson
Rodney Hood

Osman, Zizic, and Sexton will also be given significant minutes... which means they might use a 11-player rotation (with 10+ minutes a game) to start the season out.

From there, it's the process of elimination. Whoever shows a pulse after the first month will probably stay in the rotation. J.R. (temperamental) and Hood (attitude-problems) are the most likely to fall out of the rotation.

While we look more talented than 2011 (Love VS Jamison), smarter than 2011 (Korver VS Moon), and less selfish than 2011 (Nance Jr + Hill VS Hickson + Sessions), success is not a given. And while our young talent looks decent as well (Sexton + Osman + Zizic VS Eyenga + Samuels + Gee), it's not predetermined that they'll step up to the plate.

With that out of the way, let's talk more about this team while we rot away on the board (at least until pre-season starts?).

Personally I would push Clarkson out of the rotation right off the bat and he can regain his spot once Hill is traded. Let Hill be the starting PG and Sexton run the second unit with the young guys.

I don't want Sexton to have to fight off Clarkson's ball hogging. Starting Hill and Sexton together only makes sense if we think the most value can be had from Hill as a SG who occasionally plays PG. Then we start having to play Korver or JR out of position which might hurt their values.

We just currently have too many SGs to play Hill as a SG. We have 6 guys that will play their best at SG in Korver, JR, Clarkson, Hill, Nwaba, and Hood. I also think Cedi should see some time at SG but with the roster make up that won't happen at the beginning of the season.

If it were up to me I'd start Sexton, Hood, Cedi, Love, and Nance/Zizic. I understand why Lue wants to start Hill because he can ease Sexton into running the offense.

I think it makes more sense to start Hill over Hood because he's a better defender and just generally a smarter player. You're also not sacrificing any shooting with the swap. They shot pretty much the same percentage while on the Cavs last year, and Hill is historically a better three point shooter.

I get that but it doesn't help the log jam we have at SG when we start both our PGs. I do think Sexton and Hill would be an effective pairing but the trade values of Korver and JR probably go in the toilet if Clarkson is running our second unit.

I think the best solution now that I have thought about it some more is just to sit Clarkson and have Hill and Sexton run two units of vet vs young guys. Have Love split his time between the two. As guys like Korver, JR, and Hill get trade we can phase out the vet unit and run a normal rotation.
