2019 Series #35 | Indians vs Astros | July 30th, July 31st, & August 1st

Wasn't Salazar hitting 92 in his rehab starts?

Yeah, I am puzzled why Cole was called upon in the 7th of a 1 run game with the lineup turning over. Extend the game as long as possible with Cimber or Wittgren

Salazar topped out at 88.3 mph in his first major-league start in 674 days. His fastball averaged 86.5 mph. According to the Indians, Salazar was throwing in the 91-93 mph range during his six minor-league rehab starts. He totaled 28 strikeouts across 17 1/3 innings in those games.

Salazar attributed the lack of velocity to a groin injury that surfaced in the first inning and worsened as the night unfolded. He said he tweaked his groin in Arizona about two months ago, but never felt the pain again … until Thursday. But bench coach Brad Mills, subbing for Terry Francona — who took the night off following minor eye surgery — said Salazar never mentioned the issue until his fourth and final inning. Certainly, the coaching staff had to scratch their heads before that point.

“It didn’t let me use my legs,” Salazar said. “It was a battle for me today.”

The training staff will assess Salazar’s injury on Friday, and the team will proceed from there.

17 Ks in 13 IP between his 4 appearance sin Akron and Columbus. Even in the minors, I find it extremely unlikely he'd have that strikeout rate if he were floating 86 mph fastballs up in the zone. So I do believe he was hitting low 90s in his rehab starts.

Regardless, bad news whichever way you want to look at it.

My only guess is that it was planned ahead of time to use him today and the coaching staff needed him to prove himself, which he failed. That is my only explanation I can think up since we all know we have gone with Cimber/Perez combo not Cole and Olson right there.

At this point, there are no plans or timetable for a return by Salazar.

Not sure if that’s injury related or not.

He’ll be a free agent.

Super rare this forum almost unanimously agrees on something, especially if it goes against what the front office does

But that was essentially lighting 4.5 million dollars on fire
