2019 Tito Francona Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don’t always agree with his decisions (the way he tends to overuse the bullpen, the questionable bunt calls) but I can’t think of too many managers I’d rather have. Personally, barring something crazy, I hope he’s here until he retires.

maybe Connie Mack

What Tito lacks in game managing, strategy decisions, etc, he more than makes up for by being the best motivator in the game.

His game managing/strategy decisions can be infuriating, but without his motivation skills, there's no chance we're having this run that we've been on since he's been here.

And there's sure as hell zero chance we're where we currently are this season.

I'd also just like to add, Tito doesn't get nearly enough credit for how he managed the pitching staff throughout the '16 playoff run. That was absolutely masterful.

Tito is already the best Indians manager of the modern era. Better than Hargrove.

Twins are hitting 8 home runs a game with Rocco Balldeli as their manager... Tito is fine

It's hard to know what is Tito and what isn't Tito in the Indians' recent success. There haven't been a ton of MLB busts though. Swisher did sign with the Indians supposedly because of Tito and well you know how that went but that's not exactly defining of the franchise as a whole during his tenure.

I think Antonetti (and Shapiro whose moves are still paying dividends) are underrated relatively to Tito. And the organization as a whole has developed pitchers really well.

It's interesting to me that we heard Alomar Jr's name quite a bit over the years but not so much last year. Makes me wonder if Tito and Sandy have talked.

I disagree with a lot of things Tito does, but do you really believe he isn't a huge net positive?

Because none of us, to my knowledge, are privy to the dynamics inside the clubhouse, it’s difficult to determine how much of an overall impact Tito has on it. Having said that, he has never lost the clubhouse in his seven seasons as the team’s manager and his loyalty to the veterans is understandably appreciated by them.

Regarding in-game strategy and maximizing the roster, Tito is severely flawed, as far as I’m concerned, with this season in particular consisting of his most baffling decisions. Someone very credible, who a lot of you here are likely familiar with, told me that he heard a rumor that Tito supposedly has a separate agreement with ownership that he ultimately gets the final say on certain issues. Who knows if that’s actually the case, but I’m now of the mind set that while Tito shouldn’t be fired anytime soon, a more open minded and savvy tactician in the dugout would ultimately behoove the franchise.

I’m sorry but this is laugh out loud funny and borderline delusional.

I mean, holy shit. The Indians have lost Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco for 3/4 of the season. They lost Mike Clevinger for two months. Frankie missed the first few weeks and has been playing catch up all season long. Jose forgot how to play baseball for 1/2 the season. Ownership slashed salary considerably and had to make a midseason blockbuster to fill holes in the lineup. All that and the Indians STILL have their best record at 8/31 since 1999. But yeah, this is the season Tito is finally losing it, right?

Have you looked around the league and seen some of the decisions these idiot managers make? My God. People around here act like there's managers out there who don't make questionable decisions or make mistakes. Tito isn't perfect but no manager is. You're holding Tito to a standard that doesn't exist.

I will say this, there's not a manager in the MLB who could've done what Tito did with this group this season. Despite your instance that Tito is severely flawed in maximizing the roster, he got every ounce of talent out of this team this season.

"Severely flawed" is a bit of a stretch. Tito makes some bad calls, as does every manager, but you don't win as much and as consistently as they have unless you have a pretty damn good manager.

It's not a stretch at all. After what we've seen this season, quite frankly it's being polite.

Can you expand on this?

Other than an old school philosophy- primarily loving to bunt and reliance on vets, the latter of which hasn't really been an issue this year, what is so bad to you about Tito?
