2019 Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's a quote from Coach Beilein:

Many of the young players have probably been able to get by with talent and still win the game without a lot of discipline,” Beilein said. “They’re so good sometimes their team wins by 30, 20 and all these things and they don’t really know what wins and loses games. Now from here, they start to realize, ‘Hey that was really boring when coach taught it to me, but it’s really important.’

Rarely have the Cavs had a Coach with this much insight. This will be very interesting to see how the youngsters embrace this system.

Watching his interviews since his hiring, you can see why the Cavs felt so highly of the guy. In the press conferences at a podium or off the court, he seemed to be searching for things to say but when he is at practice and is really talking basketball, this guy has no hesitation and knows his stuff. I am excited to see pros with talent actually play with fundamentals. Tim Duncan was called the big fundamental and it seemed to work for him even at an older age.

I hope the Cavs know a lot more about Garland's foot injury than we do.

I think they addressed some of the worst weaknesses. If they only win 25 games it means Cedi, Collin, and Ante did nothing to improve, and none of the rookies are any good.

We gave a lot of minutes to non-NBA players last year. The team is actually sort of deep this year, and there are more than 10 guys that deserve minutes. IF Beilein is worth anything, he should be able to break 25.

25 means we are still the worst defense in history. Remember that post allstar, the offense was respectable. Injuries were some of the worst I have ever seen last year. So, yeah another injury riddled season could do it, but with average health I would expect 25 wins to mean basically none of the things we are hoping for come to pass.

It is hard to say, if there are no significant injury's and Love plays 70+ games I am with you. But that is a lot that has to go right to be over 25. There are also a lot of better teams then last year with GS breaking up. I mean look our division, Chicago is as bad as we are, but Det, Mil, IN were all playoff teams and will be the same or better. The only reason I am hesitant to put us over the 25, is I think the first couple of months of the season could be very bad. New coach, very young starting lineup. We also do not have much depth. I also think the team we start with will look a lot different after the trade deadline and buy outs.

Rookies don't have positive effects on the W/L column, and it looks like the Cavs are going to give multiple rookies a lot of minutes. I don't see their record improving much.

If Love is healthy for the whole season, I think that adds about 3 more wins by itself. If Sexton makes a huge leap, he probably accounts for 2-3 as well.

After that, you're looking for guys like Cedi and Zizic to make monster leaps, which would be surprising.

I've got them pegged anywhere from 24-28 wins.

Yeah I have them on the upper end of that estimate. I think it is going to be hard to be as bad defensively as they were. Just consistent messaging on that end will be a major help. If they can get to 28-29 defensively that is a massive improvement. The offense after Love came back was middle of the pack. So in my mind they would have to be Longabardi bad to be near that 19 number. I mean even so, there were a lot of close games last year that they basically couldn't close out because the defense was so bad.

I know I am beating a dead horse, but Longabardi's defense never worked. Not once, and when it was simplified the defensive rating was not just a little higher, it was a lot higher. If they just keep it simple and focus on basic defensive fundamentals, they will be surprisingly improved. Bickerstaff is a legit defensive coach. He isn't going to rework it over night, but he is going to improve it from historical rock bottom. Nobody played defense together last year, and the coaches didn't GAF. I think the players would have to purposely be undermining their coaches for it to be that bad again.

Shot looks significantly more fluid here. That higher release is going to be a work in progress, but it looks like he is going through his legs instead of all from the upper body like before.

Man the difference between WIndler and KPJ shooting is stark. Windler gets so much arc on his shot and he is so fast and fluid even when casually shooting. Windler shoots it the exact same way every time. Bummed he is hurt, but glad KPJ is going to get an opportunity *I think*

Yeah I keep forgetting that he's gone. That will be a massive improvement. I'm convinced you could pull a rec league coach off the street to install a better defensive system than his. What a con artist.

Garland with that WNBA release point
