It's crazy, it's like a six month exhibition season. Then you get guys getting injuries during the pointless regular season that end up determining the playoffs (witness Murray -- what was the point of that?). The irony is that the NBA playoffs are pretty much the best thing in sports. But man do you have to suffer to get there.

In some ideal world, I wonder if they could cut the regular season to like 40 games to determine seeding/let teams mesh, and then somehow make the playoffs longer. Maybe let everyone get in and have 7 game series each round. Radical change but wouldn't it be a lot more fun?
The 7-game series is also an issue for making the regular season matter.

It's a catch-22 though. We want the better teams to win in the playoffs to set up the matchups between the best players in the game. However, players on good teams are also aware of the fact that in a 7-game series, the better team will likely prevail regardless of homecourt advantage.

If you were to drop down to even a 3, or even just a 5-game series, I think you'd see more teams trying to grab every advantage available due to the potential volatility.

The NBA needs a lot of games to keep their money though. I don't care if the early rounds of the playoffs are hard for underdogs as long as you can get the regular season down to 40 games. A seven game playoff series between an underdog and a top team is still way more exciting than a regular season game.

Exactly, every solution to this problem involves the league giving up money, which isn't going to happen.

My solution has nothing to do with making life easier for the underdogs. I was trying to present a solution to making the regular season matter by making the seeding matter a little more.

The +/-'s in that GSW-TOR game are unreal. Gary Trent Jr. a cool +54 for the Raptors, good for the second highest +/- in a single game in NBA history (source).

Trivia: The worst single-game +/- belongs to a former Cav at -57. Name that Cav!

Manny Harris, 2011, Cavs @ Lakers
Nobody had a better or worse +/- from that 68-point win by the Cavs over the Heat?

Maybe they could increase the value of home-court. Make series 2-1-2-1-1, so the higher seed has more of an advantage.

Doesn't look like it:
Found this one too. Worst career +/- (all-time losingest player) is Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Second is a former Cav, and it's not surprising at all.

Wrong Rim Ricky Davis

This would only apply to the first two rounds:

If you have home court advantage in a series, in the last 90 seconds of each quarter you have the choice of playing 5 vs 4 or making your 3 pointers worth 4 pts. You have to declare at the beginning of the quarter which one you’re using.

Mine was a good quality idea!

At some point, these sports leagues are actually going ot start losing money again.

People simply aren't watching like they used to and they're not packing the stadiums like they used to.

Eventually the TV money will catch up.

When that happens, then maybe the NBA will have serious thoughts about how to make it's product better in quality instead of just quantity.

But until then, you'll never, ever get them to reduce the total number of potential games. They have to see losses first.

Lots of post-Decision-I and II Cavs on the wrong ends of those +/-‘s...

Ricky looks likes he has the worse per-minute +/-...

Dwyane Wade joining the Jazz ownership group.

With the salaries of athletes growing the way they are, this is going to become more and more common.

I wonder what kind of impact this will have on the game moving forward. One would have to assume that owner/player relations will improve.

We talked about this guy earlier this month and Cavs fans thought he's a waste of roster space but Boston just signed Jabari Parker to a two year deal.
As I said I believe injuries have been his biggest problem but through seven seasons, Parker has averaged 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game on 49.3% shooting. His best year came in 2016-17, when he averaged a career-best 20.1 points per game while playing in 51 contests. I sure as hell would rather have him on the floor playing for us instead Cedi, Windler, Prince and Thomas.

Celtics sign Jabari Parker, release Mo Wagner. Didn't realize Wagner was of such low value.
