2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think cavs failed at the opportunity of separating sexland. Garland was coming off the bench when he recovered from the shoulder injury. It could have been a perfect time to maintain that set up since they were winning at that time. But the cavs were adamant of playing 2 small guards when their coach had them defending at an all time high with a big lineup. But the defensive slide was not just on sexland; losing exum who paired well with sexton, trading for allen which caused drummond's lack of intensity, and injury to nance were all culprits.

While it is understandable that placing one of sexland to the bench would hamper the offense; but both of them starting is still a struggle to score. Having one of them come off the bench would hopefully help the defense even if they cant score at least they wouldn't be giving up 30+ points per quarter to the opponent.

When they gave him that deal it just boggled the mind. Was it for being a loyal soldier? We were rebuilding, and Kevin is a highly injury prone guy. Made no sense. He was already rich, no need to make him richer.
It was to trade him later at some point. At the time it was a better idea to sign him and try to trade him rather than lose him entirely as an asset. But 27 injuries and poor attitude later no one wants him and it was a bad idea in retrospective.

When are we gonna get rid of Stevens and Bolden, surely there are some players out there that we could give a run on a two way contract. Rather see Sir’Dom

John Hollinger has a column in The Athletic where he lists the best players (in him opinion) on the worst teams, i.e., teams that are below .500 and are expected to remain there. Larry Nance Jr made the list.

For God’s sake, don’t watch the Cavs play right now. They’ve lost eight straight games by a combined 176 points (not a typo!), and it’s no accident that Nance missed seven of the eight.

But this stretch also underscored Nance’s value. For my money, he’s the most underrated player in the league. People think of him as a non-shooter, but he’s made 38.1 percent from 3 this year on halfway decent volume. People don’t see him as a playmaker, but he’s an excellent passer who annually has one of the top assist rates at his position. He guards multiple positions and has great hands, currently owning the highest steal rate in the league among frontcourt players (2.9 percent) and the second-best overall … a level he’s approached in other seasons as well.

He’s not the type of player whom casuals think of as being good, but sum it up and he’s really good. In a related story, the Cavs are competent when Nance plays — outscored by 2.4 points per 100 possessions — and are roadkill when he sits (minus-14.4 per 100). It’s not some small-minutes fluke either: Last season the differential was nearly as bad. He has one of the league’s best contracts, too, paying him a total of $20 million for the two seasons after this one. Contending teams should be blowing up Koby Altman’s phone asking about this guy.

They can call all they want but I'm pretty sure he's not available. I agree he's the league's most underrated player with one of the most team friendly contracts. And he wants to be here.

Take the team we have now, add Nance, a top-four pick, and a $15 million free agent next year and we'll have a .500 team.

Don't think you will be adding a decent free agent.
I also contend that while Nance has been sorely missed, and would help the back line defense immensely as well as the offense's flow, you can't continue with Collin and Darius. It has to be one or the other, or possibly neither (scary thought).

Wouldn't mind Larry Nance playing some SF when he comes back.

You're letting Allen walk after the season? Or just expecting the cap to jump $20 million next year?
The expiring contracts of Drummond, Allen, McGee, and Delly free up $37.4 million according to spotrac.com. I figure about $15 million to sign Allen and a backup center, leaving about $22 million. After about $7 million for our first round draft pick that leaves about $15 million if we want to keep the total right where it is now.

You said spotrac has them at $89 million for 10 players next season. The cap this year is $109 million, and I doubt it's going up much after playing a season with no fans. Give Allen $15 million, sign the draft pick, and they're already over the cap. If they want to bring in a free agent before signing Allen, they might have two or three million available after Allen's cap hold.

Not that its a big deal but I think Allen is going to cost 15 million/year at least...I don't know what kind of back up center your looking for
but you have to add those dollars to the 15 million reducing what you think you will have available.

Absolutely. The plus/minus numbers when the Cavs have used the supersized lineup of Drummond, Love, and Nance or Thompson, Love, and Nance on the floor at the same time were much better than when we go with Okoro, Cedi, Windler, or Prince at the 3. Nance is just a much better player than those guys, he moves well enough to play the 3, and he adds another shot blocker. With Nance and Allen on the floor together the defense is far better.

Our current small forwards all have a problem. Okoro has almost zero offensive game and he might be the worst rebounding forward in the league. Cedi's defense is suspect, he's not a strong rebounder, and he is very streaky on 3-point shots. He was 0-for-8 last night, for example. Windler is a solid rebounder and passer but he can't score.

On offense Nance is an excellent passer and he hits 38% of his 3's. He's a better defender, rebounder, and 3-point shooter than any of the small forward options. I like that Prince is hitting 43.1% of his 3's since coming over from Brooklyn, but his career average is 36.9% so I don't know if his current number is sustainable.

And if he was playing SF ,who plays PF when he does?
It's not a bad idea but the players are so flawed, you can't move them here and there without it creating a big hole.
