2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dinwiddie can opt out what a xmas present for the lakers we get nothing you do not trade either one to lakers or anyone else unless you end up with a great deal we are in the driver seat .
Yeah but I don't think we could sign someone of his caliber in FA due to the Prince contract plus Allen's qualifying offer (not to mention the salary of our draft pick). It's a risk but McGee is probably gone this offseason and Cedi might not have such a big role moving forward esp if they draft another wing. Dinwiddie could certainly take his ball and sign with the Lakers or Clips this offseason but at least the Cavs would have his bird rights and could certainly top their offers financially. At the very least they could sign and trade him if he doesn't want to stay here. Mid market teams need to take an occasional risk in this league (albeit we did get a little burned on Drummond and KPJ).

Drummond yes but I still say we didn’t get burned on KPJ! He was a low risk high reward pick! 30 other teams passed on him as well. The Cavs knew it was a risk when they picked him. He may end up being another Josh Gordon.....immense talent but won’t ever stay on the court! I truly believe in two years he’ll be over seas playing

I do hope the best for KPJ but that could very well be the case. It sounds like he's in the best position he could be now working with John Lucas down in Houston and out of the spotlight. I look at it this way too..Koby basically stole Jarrett Allen and the draft pick that became Windler because the Rocket owner was cheap. If KPJ is going to thrive somewhere hopefully it's down there.

It would be great to beat Houston and Indy to close out the first half with a five-game win streak, then have nine days off to fix some stuff and come back fresh with Kevin Love for the second half.

We get Indy at home and they're 4-10 in their last 14 games with the wins all against losing teams. Houston has lost 10 in a row.

Sam Vecenie of The Athletic has a column out ranking the players available in this year's draft. I thought his comments on the overall quality of the draft are interesting.

Is this draft as strong as everyone thought entering this season?

It depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re a fan of a team that projects to have a top-five pick, you should be extremely excited. I wrote in the preseason within the first mock draft that five players were tracking better than any prospect in the 2020 iteration. That remains true to an extent. Indeed, I would take five players over Anthony Edwards at No. 1 in last year’s class. But two of those players, to me, would be in a similar boat as LaMelo Ball, who was my No. 1 overall player. This class is extremely top-heavy, with Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Jonathan Kuminga, Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs making up an elite top tier of talent every team should be legitimately excited about. I’ll do something deeper on this at a later date, but in the eyes of many evaluators with whom I’ve spoken, this top five stacks up favorably against any top five of the last decade.

Now, if you have a mid-tier lottery pick or later selections, I think the jury remains out. Right now, I wouldn’t say this class is tracking particularly weakly in that regard, but there is more uncertainty than ever. Teams, coaches and agents all have very different takes about what the next tier looks like.

As of now the Cavs are tied for the fourth worst record but that could change if they continue to play as they have the last three games, not to mention the second half schedule being easier (21 of 36 games against teams with losing records) and the expected return of Love and Nance.

I expect Love will opt out due to an ingrown hangnail.

They need to play to win.

Let the draft fall where it may. There are always 7-8 good NBA players in every draft and they are picked everywhere on the board. If your scouting department and development plan is worth is shit, you will find a good player in the draft, if not, you will consistently miss regardless of draft spot.

In my mind, nothing develops good players quite like playing winning basketball.

That’s been the Cavs biggest problem over the past 10 years plus.....their scouting department ISN’T WORTH SHIIIIIIIIIIIT and if you don’t scout/draft good you don’t have a development plan!

relative to draft position, the cavs have drafted pretty well under koby altman. the only questionable one is sexton over SGA, but SGA said he doesn't want to be drafted by the cavs. i challenge you, name me one bad draft pick in recent years?

the talent evaluators that brought us the likes of anthony bennett and jj hickson is long gone.

gotta agree with this. nearly every guy has something you can point to that you can build on. And the trades have mostly netted back guys who compliment the team's strengths/offset weaknesses.

With four Eastern Conference contenders needing a big and six teams in the West between 7.5 and 10.0 game out, I'm thinking there might be a doable trade that would get the Cavs at least a little something in return without adding salary next year. It might take three teams to get it done, but at least there are multiple teams interested.

I'm really happy that the Cavs again look like a competent team, but winning now is really bad. Is there a middle ground?

The draft is just too good. We might see teams tanking sooner rather than later. NOP, Kings, etc.. come to mind.
