2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm not talking about expanding his game. I've seen him make that shot several times. I'm talking about him taking a very makeable shot more often.

What do you have against players expanding their games? Nance developed a much better 3-point shot and it's made him a more valuable player.
Why would I want Allen to take more shots in an area where he’s not efficient?

Nance needed a 3 point shot to be a valuable player. Allen is already valuable doing what he does, and I have zero interest in seeing him shoot more jumpers.

Agree about 85%. It would be useful to have Jarrett be able to knock down a midrange when the clock is running down and other options are exhausted.

I think he already has that ability, too. I just have no interest in seeing him bump his scoring up at the cost of efficiency.

He’s a great roll man. Use his gravity there, and let’s get some legit shooters around Garland and Sexton and really make teams pick their poison in a Garland/Allen PnR.

Help from either corner? Wide open 3.

Help from the wing? Kick to Sexton who can shoot or attack.

Go under the screen? 3-ball Garland.

Drop coverage? Alley oop for Allen.

I love the way Jarrett Allen plays. The only thing I want from him is to get stronger with everything he does.

Having another 3pt shooter out there is never a bad thing. If Allen is suddenly a 35% knockdown shooter next season, I will not complain at all...

C'mon, Minnesota!

Lousy MIN and OKC the past couple nights!

Seven points from 3rd worst record!

Because he can’t consistently position himself well enough to receive the ball in the area where he’s most efficient. He either needs to extend his game or put on a significant amount of muscle and learn to seal.

Would I want a basketball player to do a fundamental basketball play? Yes.

If his offensive game is never better than it currently is, I'm fine with that. I love what he does offensively. Just keep catching lobs and drawing fouls.

It would also be useful to have him knock down a midrange when he's wide open and there are 15 seconds left on the clock. Two points is two points. Even Varajao, later in his career, started shooting jumpers from the elbows after years of seeing opponents back off and use five players to defend the other four Cavs whenever Andy got the ball.

Here's what I said about Allen in the game thread...

If Allen wants $30 million a year just show him the tape of this game. Allen had 9 points and 13 boards in 29 minutes. Allen is long and athletic with a good jump, but his slim build and his scoring range of about three feet limits what he can do. He gets pushed around by the physical centers and he doesn't have an outside shot to force them away from the rim.

My feeling is if you want the big bucks you either have to be a dominant physical force in the paint like Nurkic or you have to be able to run the floor and have an outside game to draw the opposing big away from the rim and open up the slashing lanes. Allen does neither. He's a slim, graceful, athletic player who is very good in the pick-and-roll and a solid rebounder. He allows too many layups IMO and he has a tendency to let passes and rebounds bounce off his hands and it's too easy to slap the ball out of his hands when he goes up for a shot.

There's no way Allen can put on 30 pounds of muscle so his only alternative is to follow Larry Nance Jr's lead and shoot 10,000 three-point shots in the off-season until he can make 40% when uncontested. That and 10,000 more from the elbows. Otherwise he'll always be a good but limited player who will get destroyed by the elite players at his position.

I agree that he needs to get stronger at what he is doing now but unlike Drummond he has the ability to hit uncontested jumpers from the elbows which would open up the offense and add six points a game to his scoring average. Even Varajao started shooting that shot later in his career when opposing bigs just camped at the rim when he had the ball.

Agreed. But I have the same body build as Allen and no matter how much lifting you do you can only add as much muscle as your frame is built to carry. He'll never be a 260-pound plow horse. He'll always be a finesse player, so he needs to extend his game. If he continues to be a finesse player with a 3-foot scoring range he'll just be a decent player and no more.

the other thing about the jumper is it would give him more space to cut and receive the lob w/the defense out of position.

jumpers are kind of important things to have for basketball players.. may not need to all be lights out 3 point marksmen, but a consistent 15' should be expected for an NBA player by and large.

I think Allen is perfectly capable of shooting a midrange shot in a pinch, I just don't want him to ever shoot it outside of those emergency, end of clock, situations.

I'm very much in favor of the Cavs ending the season on a 14 game losing streak.

Lottery race is very tight. Value every % you can up your chances for #1. Not record, but in
the ping pong derby.

It also looks like multiple team positions will be determined by whatever tie breaker
rules in place for identical overall record.

I am a bit ashamed to embrace the tank.
