2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I guess the Canton Charge is relocating to Cleveland. Home games will be played at the Cleveland State Wolstein Center.

What a terrible article. The author himself does say "sometime soon". But then if you read the quote he uses to support that, it 1) is a quote from The Bullshit Whisperer, and 2) actually puts the timing at "either ahead of next season or at some point during the season." So even if The Bullshit Whisperer was a trustworthy source, "at some point during the season" hardly qualifies as "sometimes soon."
Here's the original Sam The Bullshit Whisperer column in which he refers to "opposing general managers reached by HoopsWire". He doesn't specify HOW MANY GM's were "reached", only that "most believe Love and the Cavs will reach a buyout agreement, either ahead of next season or at some point during the season."

So did he "reach" 15 GM's and 12 believe Love will be bought out? Or did he reach three and two believe he'll be bought out? The Bullshit Whisperer should have made that clear.

FWIW a buyout makes sense; the Cavs free up a few million plus playing time for players who have a future with the team while Love gets to play for a contender and chase another ring without giving up any money, assuming his new contract pays him the money he gave up on the buy out.

If I were the Cavs I'd let Love's agent shop him to any teams Love would like to play for and see what they would offer him as a free agent. If somebody offers him $8 million over two years then the Cavs pay him the remainder of his deal minus $8 million. Works for everybody.

It doesn't work for the Cavs. He's owed about $60M over the next two seasons, and the Cavs don't have anything near the cap room to buy out $52M.

They would be paying him $52 million instead of $60 million. They would save $8 million in cap space and could use that money to sign a player to take his spot on the roster, like maybe a decent backup point guard.

They would still be over the cap even if Love gave back that money though. It really wouldn't help them sign any new players but they could conceivably give it to guys they need to resign such as Allen or Sexton. At this point it might be addition by subtraction having Love off the roster unless he changes his attitude and comes into camp in basketball shape. It's obvious he was too busy living his best life last offseason.

But they don't have $52 Million in cap space to pay him the buyout in the first place. The Cavs are still way over the cap, so the max they can pay in a buyout is Love's salary for this year, which is a bit over $31M. If they can't get Love to accept only $31M to become an FA, they can't buy him out at all.
I don't think this is correct @The Human Q-Tip
Don't believe they have to have 52 mil in capspace to buy him out. The $52 mil would get spread out over the 2 remaining years of his contract similar to the Pistons/Blake Griffin situation.

I think you may be correct. I normally don't do this, but I don't want to mislead people so I'm going to edit my original post.

I thought people said buyouts are stretched over 5 years now? If you can spread it over just 2 I am more in favor, but still, we ought to see what shakes out.

2x the length of the contract +1 year. So if he has two years, it would be 5 years to get paid.

In that scenario, the new team has no incentive to pay him anything more than league min, which is fine, I still dont see a buy out for another year personally, but ofcourse i have been wrong.
