2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Really encouraged by Sexton the last two games.

He's getting a lot of buckets w/o dribbling into them himself. Getting to the line. Cutting constantly.
yeah, felt like having Love on the floor helped that.. like Collin will defer to Kevin since Kevin has proven it in his mind.
They have a perennial DPOY candidate in Gobert, Conley is an excellent defensive guard, and they put elite offensive weapons with good length on the defensive end all around them.

Joe freaking Ingles is making almost three 3's per game at a 50% clip! His TS% is .736!!! That's incredible!

O'Neal, Mitchell, Ingles, Bogdanovic, Niang, Conley, Clarkson... That's seven guys in their rotation making threes at a high volume.
Utah is also a well run organization that values consistency and patience while always trying to put out the best version of themselves year in and year out.

Also, one of the best head coaches in the league.

Ah, looks like I missed a nice win! Cool to see Garland go off; neat fact about him -- his dad, Winston, is the most notable basketball player from my city's college (MO State), which hasn't produced a drafted NBA player since him.

Next game is against OKC, who are without SGA (plantar fasciitis) and will be on the second of a back-to-back. Cavs can definitely get a streak going against them. I def plan to watch and be here on the forum since 1) KLove is back and 2) the OKC Thunderfans forum has apparently died forever (and OKCtalk is only available to residents).

OKC is in full on tank mode at this point.

One of these deals wherein the Cavs losing potentially helps them more long term but I don't want them to sit out the young guys to make it happen.

But i wouldn't be surprised if Sexton and Garland suddenly got sat for "rest" next game.

I regret missing this night's game, but I felt pretty spent after watching them lallygag through this past week... Here's my thoughts on the team in general:
  • Even if Sexton and Garland were to stay teammates, is it really worth its weight when the team (eventually) vies for a playoff push (years down the road perhaps)? The Cavs had this situation in the past, and they made their decisions based on who performed better (like when M. Price improved his second year VS the rookie Kevin Johnson; like when T. Brandon became the regular starter 3-4 years after developing as the lead backup; like when A. Miller was the player the Cavs chose to run with over Brevin Knight).
  • If Garland can impact the game enough as an offensive option (he's at 16 points and 6 assists), he could be a keeper. But if Sexton manages to improve all-around, not just getting buckets... It's a hard decision to make. This last stretch of games is like a personal competition between the two (on who to keep).
  • One thing I'll point out is how different our team looks just by playing two (past their prime) veterans who also are the remaining players on the Cavs 2016 Championship team. Kevin Love may be injury-prone, but he knows how to play (and how to win). He had authority to try to get Garland to move the ball and not bog down the offense. He also is able to shoot, rebound, and throw outlet passes. Delly is a shell of his former self, but he got Sexton to move more without the ball. He also is a proven leader (he can get these guys to play winning basketball even without doing much). Even doing things like feeding the post was a far cry from what I was watching a week or two ago...
  • Can't really say much about the rest of them, but here goes:
  • I miss Nance and Allen out there. Can't we get any luck with our injury-situation??
  • I want to see more from Okoro. Now that we have some guys who can move the ball, maybe we'll see more.
  • I want to see less from Osman. Can't a guy have enough from this Turkish Jekyl and Hyde?
  • Hartenstein kinda looks nice out there. Not really a long term starter at this point, but whatever...
  • Prince, Windler, Wade, Stevens, and Thomas: It's all over the place with these guys. Some need to get healthy, others need to prove they belong in the league (or need to be cut after the season ends), and others need to find their place. They could even be placeholders for whatever we get in the draft, free agency, and/or trade.
  • Despite how bad the team has looked on occasion, they still could very well compete for a play-in (not likely though). Being only 4 games out. But it might be for the best to not aim for the bottom either. Somehow, lottery luck hasn't been kind. But we clearly need more talent to be taken seriously (at least past this year). I'd settle for a top 5 pick since this would be the year to have one.
TL;DR: What in the world am I watching? And did I go off the deep end?

Great observation and good call.

Without a doubt, he plays differently when Love makes his presence felt on the court. The ball simply doesn't stick to Sexton the way it does without Love on the floor. But it's more about how Sexton approaches the offensive end, as weird as that sounds. Larry has a good rapport with Sexton but it's a different synergy between those two. The ball sticks to Sexton more with Larry out there and guys don't move as much.

Funny how that works.

This game is such an imperfect science. One of the main reasons I love it. It's jazz.

For a 20+ point win, it still seemed like that was more Spurs heavy on the "highlights"
that and they have the corniest of corn announcer. dude was dropping some serious cringebombs in there.

Last three games Okoro is 13-for-17 from the field and 5-for-5 on 3's. That was after going 2-for-16 the previous two games.

Now the question is whether these last three games are anomalies or if something has changed with Love and Delly returning. We'll find out over the next 22 games.

They said last night that 10 of the last 22 games will be against playoff teams. Which means 12 will be against lottery teams. With Love, Delly and Prince back and Okoro finding his confidence it will be really interesting to see how the Cavs stack up against the other non-playoff teams.

They will also play Miami at home after losing to them twice on the road so that will be a good measuring stick. Can't wait to get Allen and Nance back so we can finally see what the final version of the 2020-21 Cavs looks like going into next year.

It certainly is interesting, the next 13 are all against either bad teams or fringe playoff teams and then it gets real tough again.

We are 3 games behind Chicago for the play-in and we are getting healthy at the same time with a favorable schedule over the next few weeks.

These next few weeks will mean a lot toward how many lottery balls we'll have. We'll still lose our fair share of games, even against bad teams, but might win a few more than tank territory.

He's going to have games where he's going to miss shots, games where he will make them. But his game hasn't changed much with Love and Delly, it's just that Okoro will look good on teams that play smart basketball (same with Nance). He will take good shots, and if the ball is moving, he will get more good shots, and if the ball isn't moving, he will not take many shots at all.
