2020-21 Offseason Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
IDK if he's been excluded from his teams' 40 man.. but Jhon Torres (St. Louis Cardinals, I think) would look good putting his Indians uniform back on.. His power bat and contact and arm are his best assets..
Jhon Torres was NOT placed on the Cardinals 40 man roster...
I have also seen an article where a Pirates fan suggested Torres would be a good R5 target selection for the Pirates.

As for sportscoach's earlier question:
Personally, I do not want to muddy the waters further by adding a R5 player to the Tribe mix. Rather work thru the internal options. There are enough guys needing playing time & opportunity to prove themselves (or make clear they are not able to handle the job)..

So the argument against a R5 guy is he would "muddy the waters"? I was sad to see Jhon Torres depart the way he did.. (I like Oscar Gonzalez as well, fwiw)..

We'll go waaaaaaaay out on a limb and agree that a pittsburgh fan and I thinking alike is purely coincidental.. and nothing what so ever to do with great minds thinking alike..

Agree to work through our options, especially in OF where we got Mercado, Johnson and Jones. Then we have naquin/luplow. I would look at a catcher but assume one will come in trade. For relief, you will be cutting maybe Rodriquez next. The upside may not be there by the time we draft in 20s.

PS -- If you want some upside on reliever side, look internal. I am pushing Hentges and Mejia as internal candidates come August (last option year). The upside over Hill or Maton of someone at 20 in draft order, may not be that great to keep them around as your 7th man for early part of year (assuming rosters go back to normal). The other issue is that most of these guys probably have not pitched in a meaningful game since 2019 (assuming most of taxi squad players were added to roster and thus instructional month is all there is). There will be a lot of rust on some players.

I am looking to try and bring in more left handed pitching talent personally since we do lack it. Also if we do non tender Hedges, we need catching depth badly so I am not against taking someone in those two spots. I mean there is 5 catchers on that list from mlb.com. Henry from the Brewers could be a nice pick for us since we only need a backup and not a starter if Hedges is gone.

ICYMI.. Cam Hill was in a car accident & needed surgery on his right wrist yesterday...

Info & pictures regarding it from Zack Meisel...

Twins dumped Eddie Rosario. I don't want him but I'm glad he won't be a Twin anymore - dude mashed us for some reason.

Tribe FO is hiring!

The Cleveland Indians Baseball Research & Development group is seeking to hire an experienced data scientist to use advanced machine learning techniques to enhance our ability to quantify the game of baseball. In this role, you will work with complex high-dimensional, spatiotemporal data such as video, player tracking, and biomechanics data. You will use these data sources to help the team acquire the best possible players (i.e. trades, free agency, draft) and develop them into members of a championship-caliber team. As a machine-learning expert within the research team, you will be responsible for model conception, design, and implementation. We are open to a remote role for the right candidate, but relocation to Cleveland, OH is preferred.

I'm actually not against getting him if he doesnt cost to much. I don't expect him though to be in Cleveland though.

Position won't be open long.

crazy to see these 24 year olds and then to think that we've gotta protect arias even tho he's only 20 years old - otoh, san diego's current ss is all of a year older than arias

Yeah I don't get why 16 and 17 year olds aren't given more time before protection.

The amount of development time all boils down to when they 1st signed/ got drafted (& signed).

If 19 or older, the player gets 4 years before needing to be added to the 40 man roster or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft.
If UNDER age 19, the player gets 5 years. So someone that signed early as Int'l free agent (could be as young as 16), that player would be younger than those via the draft process.

EDIT Addition:
It used to be 3 (19 or up) & 4 (under 19) years respectively but it was adjusted up @10 years ago...
