Figured we could use a thread to discuss the questions facing the Indians this offseason and update as things move along throughout the winter.

  • What's the status of Terry Francona? If he chooses to retire, do the Indians hire Alomar or pursue options outside the organization?
  • When does Francisco Lindor get traded and to whom?
  • What's the financial status of the club? Will options be exercised on Carlos Santana and Brad Hand? Is it possible to offer long term extensions to any of the young talent, especially some of the starting pitchers?
  • What the hell does the front office do to address the outfield?
  • How much movement will we see, both on the trade front and in free agency, throughout Major League Baseball in this first post-COVID offseason?
Spring Training will be here before we know it. Hope springs eternal. Go Tribe!

Santana. Hand. Gone. Lindor traded for young major league ready sticks, especially corner outfielders I think one of mercado or zimmer will handle cf Naylor to first
Hopefully bring back hernandez. No idea at ss

Might see perez gone too

I think Hand is gone and Oliver Perez retires.

Who are our internal lefty reliever options that could realistically make an impact next year?

Roberto-5mill
Hand-9mill
Carlos-17mill
Lindor-17 mill (minus what they take on)
Domingo-4.75mill
Leon-2mill
Oliver-3mill

The question becomes what they do with that $57.75 million they would save.

First, here are some items we learned from 2020:
  • Indians SP should be very good for the foreseeable future.
  • They have some interesting arms in the bullpen. Adding Clase should only make it stronger.
  • Sandy Alomar Jr. seems to be an acceptable replacement for Tito, should he retire. He was far from perfect, but there's no substitute for experience.
  • The Clevinger trade seems to have provided organizational depth.
  • Going forward, the Indians have no foundational players in the outfield.
IMO, the biggest challenge going forward, is replacing the face of the franchise, Frankie Lindor.

Lindor had to be barely above replacement this season so we already got a glimpse of what the team will look like next year without him.

Naylor has potential going forward. I’m very worried about a Lindor trade and whether we will be able to get what we want back for him.

What I think will happen

-Santana's 17.5M option is declined for 500K, saving 17M
-Hand's 10M option is declined for 1M, saving 9M
-Lindor is traded for multiple prospects and pre-arbitration players, saving approximately 17M
-Hernandez is not resigned, saving 6.25M
-Perez is not resigned, saving 3M
-Leon is not resigned, saving 2M
-DeShields is non-tendered, saving 1.85M
-Naquin is non-tendered, saving 1.45M

So right away that's 57.5M cut from the payroll immediately.

I would explore a team-friendly contract extension with Bieber, but otherwise that's about it.

If Francona retires, I would get rid of the entire coaching staff including Alomar, but I think they'd just give Sandy the job and go from there.

Pay Bauer. We need some more F U guys here vs F Me players.

Whats the payroll if we make all those moves?

The payroll is set for $65 million for only guaranteed and estimated arbitration. Take away Lindor, Deshields and Naquin and it's just under $48 million which would have put them by far last in payroll this year. That's why I think they make these moves and spend a little.

So that isn't even factoring in a potential Hand or Santana move either....wow.
