The better you can do something directly opposite of what everybody else is doing...and what everybody else is used to...the more success you are likely to have.

I wonder, in these days of hard throwers and even harder swingers, with the accompanying lack of bat control, what Hoyt Wilhelm and Joe Neikro would do to batters.

I've been studying scouting reports on Clase. He throws exceptionally hard, but there are other guys who throw exceptionally hard. The separator is that his pitches move opposite of the pitches of the others.

On the other hand, there are many pitchers who have the same type of movement as Clase. But, again, the separator is that Clases pitches move ten clicks faster than theirs.

I’ll withhold judgment on Clase until jup weighs in.

remember Trey Haley? He coulda really been something if he had been able to command that fastball... Velocity is one thing, see Kyle Dowdy and others for example, but if you have that "edge" you can become insanely better.

Karinchak as dedicated closer makes no sense to me. For now you bring him in at the start of an inning or a punch out or bust scenario. General rule, if there are base runners involved make a different choice.

Clase makes sense. However, I think we will see a mix of Clase and Wittgren most days and maybe even our best lefty getting a few shots.

Hot take Hail Mary... Gose makes the team and takes on more and more leverage situations becoming one of our best bully arms as the season goes on..

Cookie experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow.. bordering on soreness.. Mets staff seems to believe it's normal for spring training but will ease Carlos back into a throwing program designed to slowly ramp up his spring training schedule.. Time will tell..

Carlos does have a history of this, so it isn't out of the norm. But he is also about 10 years removed from TJ. Shelf life for TJ is around 7 years so he is on the wrong side of that curve. However, he did a good job of cleaning up his mechanics so hopefully it is just the norm he seems to experience during the spring.

Funny you say as much jup. Watching Quantrill yesterday made me wonder if he isn't starting to experience the dreaded "dead arm". I seem to remember Kluber having this issue in a couple of ST seasons as well. I'm sure they're not the only ones.

IMO Quantrill possesses a good to very good FB, wish it had a couple more ticks. After that he gets real average real fast. His future is in the bullpen or clinging on to a BOR spot on a team with a subpar staff. Maybe he is Andrew Miller type ultimately..

Hope I am wrong, and in my attempt to disapprove myself watched a ton of video on him.. I don't see it. I would be looking to move him now as he still has a good amount of value.

I think you're way off base and I think the Cleveland staff probably feels the same. Quantrill has very good command of his improving stuff. Not many can throw a sinker at 95+ mph consistently and his slider and changeup are good offerings as well. He's one of the best at inducing weak contact and as he continues to improve I expect him to strike out more batters. He never looks like he's laboring and the ball comes out of his hand easily. Yeah, I think this kid is a star in the making. I expect him to be a legitimate #2 or #3 SP very soon. The beautiful thing about that is this team doesn't need to pigeon hole him into a number.

I suspect his numbers will resemble those of Tomlin when all is said and done.

I'll take that bet anytime. Way more capable pitcher than Tomlin. What makes you suggest that?

Quantrill will get more strikeouts. But again, i watched several games worth of video and I just don't see it. That said, I do believe he could become a legit weapon out of the pen, but getting through the order 3 times in a row.. See Josh Tomlin.

He is in a great spot to improve though. Anything is possible and if he succeeds as a starter it will because he has taken a major step forward, not his current profile. Good spot for him to be, so I hope he can improve. If not, the pen or a change of scenery aren't terrible options.
