So is there betting on how long he stays with Oakland? I say till end of April. Another 0-4 yesterday. After fast start of first 5 games, he is 1-12 - coming back down to earth. A's just have too many OF on their top 30 list that need just some AAA seasoning, even if As system isn't as deep as our minor system.
Brown
Bolt (#17)
Berrera (#7)
Diechman (#9)
Reed (#21)
Thomas (#24)

As for Oviedo, he has chance to stick longer but Pirates have 3 pitchers on 60 day dl already with 2 that should come back in few months ... so maybe in mid to late June when Pirates need to shuffle their 40 man roster unless Oviedo develops a "sore/dead arm" and goes on extended 60-day DL just about when Soriano (other rule 5) comes off it. They both need 90 day on active roster if on DL rest of time (April-June & July-Sept) to circumvent rules.

Given the dearth of outfield talent in the Oakland system, esp in the upper levels, I think Tom has a good chance of sticking...unless he totally falls off a cliff.

But falling off a cliff isn't out of the question.

I like his chances to stick. Seth Brown, is interesting but very much a K machine. Tom has enough OF versatility, lacks concerning platoon splits, hits left and runs faster than slower..

He get around 50ABs to do something. Also he may get hurt at some point and ride out the rest of the season on the IL after hitting the 90 game threshold.

If he can't make it in the big leagues at his age why would we want him back?

We don't exactly have upper level depth in the OF (save Johnson) ourselves, that's why. Until Jones (or others) start getting reps there, if he/they do. A warm body maybe as good as it gets. Personally I feel the A's have already tried to acquire his rights and we said no, for now. I assume a similar thing happened with T.Stephan who I am sure the Yanks want back.

Ya I don’t see Tom coming back to the Indians system even if the A’s offer him. I assume we would have to put him on the 40 man to take him back (someone can correct me if I’m wrong) and I don’t see who he bumps.

Oakland is set in its starting outfield, but beyond that it has very very little.

Their AAA outfielders are

Bolte...27 yrs old....40 FV
Berrara....25 yrs old...35+
Deichman....26 yrs old...35+
Brown...29 yrs old...

Austin Beck is probably their best OF prospect. He is 22 and a 40+, due to start in A+ or maybe AA.

A lot of these guys are Zimmer, Allen, et al.

In contrast we have Jones, Johnson, and any of our MIFs we choose to move...all at least as highly rated as their best one...and most rated well above.

Dude, we have plenty of OFers. They're just MIFers right now.

Certainly some truth to that. The only upper level (AAA) MIF prospect I can see moving to the OF other than Jones is Miller at the moment. But I think Miller will end up playing almost everywhere in 2020. I consider him a jack of all trades - but master of none. If he can handle all the IF positions OK and play passable D in the outfield - LF seems possible. He should become quite the force.

Other MIFs who could show up in the OF
Palacios
Bracho
Arias
Clement
Gabby Rod.
Fermin? - is his arm good enough for CF?

I have Arias replacing JRam at 3B, Clement will be the utility guy type, Miller will hit, so they will just find him a position lol Jones stunk at 3B, so they need to find a position for his bat...

I see our disconnect; mlbpipeline is a bit higher on Barrera and Deichman. They have 45 grades to them. They also have Armenterros and Reed with 35+/40 grade at AA this year. Thus, even though they don’t have a highly ranked prospect like a Jones, they don’t have a “dearth” of talent where they will keep Tom around for very long if he isn’t producing.

Now, the question is if we want him back, especially when we didn’t have him at the alt camp and can keep Ramirez for extended look. But, for $50,000, I assume Dolan ain’t that cheap to nix another warm body. Yet, he isn’t going to be on our 40 man at year end, so he will be minor league FA anyway - so a low level trade isn’t out of question.

I was just trying to stoke a conversation as I thought Tom wouldn’t be gone for long since being drafted. I doubted Oviedo would come back. Yet, Pirates will have some potential roster issues come mid-season (27 on 40 man with 3 of them on 60 day dL) and Oviedo only pitched 3 innings so far (1 ER but usually late when subs come in).

First time Rule 5 draftees don’t need to be added to 40 man if offered back at anytime during season. They just have to clear waivers where another team can put them on their 40 man and continue follow Rule 5 procedures till end of season.

Miller's bat will find a place no doubt. I had posted earlier wondering how Miller will squeeze in with the rest of the OFers. I'm assuming that Naylor is the future LFer once Rosario exits. CF should be betweein Rosario, Mercado, and Johnson. RF could be Johnson or Jones.

Miller's swing is low maintenance so a utility player might be his calling, but he's good enough to be a fulltime 2B IMO. He may ultimately perform better than Freeman, but I think they are very similar players with each having slight advantages in certain areas. I won't be disappointed seeing either at 2B.

Rodriguez and Arias could have the bats to play corner positions. I think Rodriguez has already been moved to 3B and has transitioned quite well. From what I can gather he wasn't nearly as adept at SS as the others you listed.

Bottom line Criz is that there are numerous MIF prospects getting close and they're(Cleveland Brass) going to have to make some difficult decisions.

What this organization is presently missing is an OFer like Clint Frazier. I'm not suggesting that he can be had at all, he's just the first name that popped up and is a good example of what I personally prefer. It's too bad that Franmil can't play better defense in RF. I think that would make things much easier.

I'll take this opportunity to apologize to you. I don't want to come across as all knowing or that my opinions matter more than anyone else's because they don't. I just really don't like when what I say is deliberately misconstrued or exasperated to make a point. I don't want or expect another poster to have ill feelings toward an individual because I'm in disagreement with them either, because I don't do that myself. In my mind, we each develop relationships with others individually. Good day to you.

After watching Josh Naylor butcher RF.. it might be time to take a real look at what Franmill can do in RF.. RF is the natural position for Franmill, so, it may look like he knows what he's doing out there...

edit: I still maintain, Franmill might be best suited with a shovel.. 6'7", 255 pounds guys with some athleticism at 1B play a LONG time as 1B'ers..
