I have no problem with players going for everything they can get. After all, it's the American way.

As long as they are honest about it.

I also have no problem with, and actually admire, a player betting on himself.

If Lindor doesn't take the Mets offer, that is exactly what he is doing...betting on himself.

The dollars doen't really matter. They are merely points in a game. And Lindor would be betting that he can hit the highest number on the pinball machine.

If Lindor doesn't take the Mets money, he'll be worth a lot less after the shellacking WFAN fanatics lay on him.

I'm not so sure.

On the open market, I think Lindor may get multiple offers at that amount, leaving him options as to where he spends the rest of his career....including NY.

Lindors goal has always been to test free agency. Signing two days before he reaches his goal, if he is serious about his deadline, seems strange to me.
I think there are too many SS hitting the market. He should take this deal, IMO.

I'll never blame a player for trying to maximize his market value.

Just don't swing too hard and miss completely.
This.

Thinking he can get a contract until his age 39 season is swinging too hard, IMO. Teams have learned their lesson with dead weight contracts with aging players. Lindor is lucky to be able to sign a 10 year deal, very few players are young enough to qualify for a 10 year deal like this.

I haven't seen any indications that the wealthier owners have learned any lessons.

Betts will get paid $33 mil at age 39.

Harper will make $24 mil at age 38.

Machado will make $35 mil at age 35.

Cole will make $36 mil at age 37.

Rendon will make $38 mil at age 36.

Strasburg will make $35 mil at age 37.

^^this. If Mr. Smiles gets off to a slow start, the NYC media and fan base will crucify him. Frankie is starting to enter into Kylie Irving territory in terms of like ability.

And I made $XX at age 36; we’ll let’s not go there.

I remember Mickey Mantle signing for $100,000 for 1963 season. Francisco Lindor just turned down $200,617.28 per game from Mets. When is enough enough? He was offered 10-year $325M deal. Wants 12-year $385M to age 39 season. Not a good look for Mr. Smile, especially in pandemic.
Looks bad in a pandemic to try and get every dollar out of a team owned by a hedge fund manager? Yeeeaaaah you can go fuck yourself, Gary Myers.

Frankie needs to go for every last dollar the Yankees and Dodgers can offer, and only if they can't ante should be settle for the Mets dirty money.
