2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, of course it isn't accurate or fair to say, "these rookies became good pros because of Drew Petzing."

I do think it is fair to say Drew Petzing has a track record of being part of the successful development of young skill position players. At any rate, I didn't know much about that guy specifically, I have been a fan of how the Vikings draft and develop players for the past half a decade.

I'll say, for his athletic gifts, McKinnon hasn't amounted to much--his vision and patience never developed.

Diggs is right where he should have been without injuries at Maryland--a very good first round WR. He was projected there the year before he got hurt.

Theilen is a nice feather in his cap. But honestly, I like to reward correct approaches and behaviors, which are reproducible and teachable, rather than judging strictly by results, which often times don't have any causal relationship to the controllable actions of the individual. We don't know what this guy did to help (or hinder) any of these players.

OBJ under McAdoo (whether as OC or HC):

10.6 targets/6.7 catches/94.1 yards per game; 14.13 Y/R; 8.88 Y/T; 62.9% Catch%; 38 TD in 47 G

OBJ otherwise:

9.2 targets/5.4 catches/74.5 yards per game; 13.82 Y/R; 8.12 Y/T; 58.8% Catch%; 10 TD in 28 G

Judging coaches who have been in football 5 minutes on "who they've developed" isn't a great metric.

You have no idea who these guys are or what they'll do, so maybe lets not pretend to until they actually have some long-term experience and visibility into what their coaching styles and methods are.

Petzing seems like a pretty sharp guy, in what limited opportunities I've seen him speak.

Petzing has had suitors over the years...

Mcadoo is a very good positions coach/OC I would love to have him on this staff.

Alex Van Pelt only has one year as an offensive coordinator under his belt, way back in 2009 with the Buffalo Bills.

He does have 10 years experience as a QB coach.

Alex Van Pelt. Now that's a name I haven't heard of in a long time.

Long, long time NFL backup QB. His coaching career looks incredibly average. We'll see, I guess.

That’s a let down from some of the names we heard earlier.
Let’s hope they still get Joe Woods after the Super Bowl.
