2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
General question - I think the league changed the rule a few years ago so that all assistants are treated as equal in pecking order for lateral moves. If that's correct, a guy who's defensive line coach for another team woild have to get permission to become defensive coordinator for us. Am I wrong?

I thought DC would be a promotion. They do consider passing game and running game coordinators to be equal to OCs/DCs so they need permission to interview but for a DL coach to DC I think is a promotion and allowed.

I'm sure Edwards has his own ideas too, but if he were to bring some of Zimmer's philosophy over would that fit our current players, particularly Ward and Greedy? I haven't followed the Vikings enough to know their scheme.

Here’s a cool article from a few years ago about their system. I’d assume it’s mostly the same.

Stefanski, who is at Browns headquarters today finalizing his contract, will be rounding out his coaching staff soon, and one possibility for defensive coordinator is Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards, the Browns’ linebackers coach in 2004.

Browns current defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was set to be Stefanski’s defensive coordinator last year if he got the Browns’ job, is also on the radar this year, a source said.

Glad it's happening for the Vikings, sometimes voices go stale when they've been there too long with the same players, but someone is going to get real lucky if they pair up Edwards and Gray again.

Sure, Edwards didn't call plays, but he was heavily involved in game planning for the defense, which has been a major strength of the Vikings the entire tenure he spent there.

And Gray's track record of developing DBs speaks for itself, between the Legion of Boom in its infancy and the group the Vikings were putting out there from 2014 to 2018.
