2020 Assistant Coach News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For reference, the 49ers played 4-2-5 at like a 70 percent clip last year.

Whatever semantics or heel digging you want to do on “base,” the Browns defense likely won’t look all that different before the snap.

Pretty decent split across Cover 3, 4 and 1.

Is this similar to what he ran in Denver?

Zero percent chance this team plays 3 LBs on the field for the majority of their snaps.

Absolutely none. But whatever you want to call it that makes the fans feel nice when they call into their local radio station.

To me in the modern NFL a 4-3 base means we play 4 down lineman in our base d but run Nickle and dime packages off of it more often than not. It still means something to say 4-3 vs 3-4 base, but I get what you are saying.

It really doesn't.

Wade Phillips had been running a 4-3 Under scheme with a standing Edge all year last year. It's all about gap schemes and how wide you line your EDGE's.

What happened to pagac? One of them going to be outside and one inside?

I like that he is flexible enough to at least say he will taylor the scheme to his players. Whether that's a 3/4, 4/3, 2/5, 5/2 or even a 1/6 or 6/1 base it's encouraging. Also if he can build some discipline into this D and eliminate the helmet swinging he will be a fresh start there too.

32 years old and 7 year NFL coaching career, just hired a 32 year old GM.....I am 48, holy shit what have I done with my life?, lol

Don't know anything about him but I do love the energy a young coach can bring.

Alexander the Great conquered the known world by age 33.

Caesar, no slouch himself, upon seeing Alexander's tomb in Alexandria Egypt, and in-between bouts of plowing Cleopatra, wept for at age 44 he had done so little compared to Alexander.

So, don't feel so bad.

Jason Tarver and Joe Woods coached together in Oakland in 2014.

Tarver was the DC and Woods was the defensive backs coach.

Niners OLB coach from '05-'10
Raiders DC '12-14
Niners LB '15-17
Vandy DC/LB 18-19

Tarver was the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt for two seasons, and did a fine job in the SEC developing linebackers. Both Zach Cunningham and Oren Burks were day two picks. Hopefully he can get the most out of Takitaki and Mack Wilson.

Neither Cunningham nor Burks ever played under Tarver. Cunningham was drafted in 2017, Burks in 2018. Tarver wasn’t hired on at Vandy until February of 2018.
