Also if he comes here that means Steve Wilks is probably staying

Does it? And would we even really want that?

Apples and oranges, but this could be like Banner "reuniting" with Tom Heckert.

Surprisingly, the only major Philly guy who ended up staying in that shuffle was Heckert's right-hand man and scouting director...Jerry Sandusky's stepson.

I'm going to make my case for Jim Caldwell.

He was the QB coach for Tony Dungy and won a Super Bowl with the Colts in that role. Stayed with Dungy until he retired and replaced him, went 14-2 in his rookie season as HC and made it to the Super Bowl. He was 14-0 until they rested the starters after locking up home field for the playoffs. As a rookie, had he not rested his starters, he may have gone undefeated! I understand he had a very talented team with prime Peyton Manning, but he did nothing to get in the way of that teams success (like our coach routinely does) and was there the whole time they were building it under Dungy. He had a good year after that at 10-6 and a playoff appearance and then was coach for the Manning injury season when they Lost for Luck and then he was (in my opinion unjustly) fired.

He followed that up with becoming the QB coach and OC (mid season promotion) in Baltimore a year later and helped them win the Super Bowl, somehow getting Joe Flacco to look like an MVP in the playoffs.

He turned that into a job as Head Coach of the Detroit Lions where he spent 4 years going 11-5, 7-9, 9-7, and 9-7 with a franchise almost as hapless as the Browns. He was the winningest coach for the Lions since the 1950s, which would also probably be the case if he put those same win totals in 4 seasons with us. I have not fact checked this, but anecdotally it seems true because we've sucked for a very long time, just like the Lions.

I have no idea if he's interested as he took a year off, then got hired by the Dolphins this year but left due to family issues. If he is interested though, this is the guy we need to look at. Strong history as a QB coach, OC, and Head Coach. Got Joe Flacco to look elite and win a Super Bowl. Been on the biggest stage multiple times for multiple teams so he knows how to win. Had winning records 3 of 4 years in freaking Detroit of all places who had way less talent than we do.

He's an ideal candidate for us.

Think he's interested?

Hard to say. I was actually surprised to see he was 64. That wouldn't deter me from hiring him but it's probably a stretch to think someone in their mid 60's wants to think about coming back for 4-5 years but maybe I am underestimating his desire to coach.

I think he'd be a good choice, I have just heard so little about him wanting to return. I'm sure we'll find out if he does in the next few weeks, as I would imagine he'll be a top 2-3 choice for many teams that are looking.

I'd take Ron Rivera in an instant.

I'd certainly prefer him to McCarthy but he's only had 3 winning seasons in 9 years.

I think he would have a much more disciplined team due to the fact he is lightyears ahead of Freddie when it comes to experience but this feels a bit "shiny new toy" to me.

I'm personally ready to pull the plug on Freddie but my more rational side thinks the Browns could go either way depending on how the team plays out the remainder of the season. If they look like a team making steady improvement... especially when it comes to showing they can get Odell to mesh with Baker and that means getting the results in the red zone. I have to think if they show on the field that there is promise for significant improvement they'll chalk Freddie's shortcomings up to the "rookie HC" excuses and they'll stick with him.

But having watched everything I've seen out of Kitchens and his staff I seriously doubt the team will perform well enough for this to happen. It could happen but I bet against it at this point.

I think it's more likely that under Freddie this team will continue to disappoint in ways that push the needle more towards firing him. I definitely think the team's performance through the end of the season will swing it one way or the other. The Ravens game will be a huge part of where we end up with Kitchens.

Ron Rivera would instantly be the best coach this team has had since the return. No idea how you fire a guy during a season when he has to play the backup quarterback the entire fucking season. Rivera isn't perfect, but he's been a damn good coach for the Panthers.

Tepper seems like he has been wanting to take a walk on a coaching search for a while.

Would absolutely take Rivera and search for a young team of offensive gurus that know how to teach.

Having lived in NC for a few years now I've seen my share of Panthers games. Rivera would be a culture changing kind of coach, which I do agree we would benefit a lot from. But he's not a good game day coach. He has very similar issues with personnel, clock, and adjustments that Freddie does. But he's shown in 9 years he didn't learn to overcome those deficiencies so I'm not confident he ever will. He's also the type to punt on 4th and inches from the 50.

I'd take him over a lot of other guys, no doubt. But it would be a hire based on making a big splash, not actually hiring a great coach. He's an excellent DC and I'd love him in that role. But he's a mediocre head coach at best.

Rivera seemed to always get a ton out of his defensive talent. I think he could make this Browns crew of defenders dominant.

Offensively, they have the talent ya'll. We're just searching for a basic competence from an OC who can help develop Baker.

His current OC, Scott Turner (Norv's son), isn't a bad look in the event of a Rivera tenure.

Was the QB coach in Minny when Teddy Bridgewater went to the Pro Bowl in his second year. Had Sam Bradford playing at a high level, he's produced well. The fact he had Kyle Allen showing signs of life in Carolina this year I think is a testament to his abilities.

Also this:

In 2013, Turner coached wide receivers for the Cleveland Browns, helping Josh Gordon to the best receiving season in Browns history. Despite appearing in just 14 games, he became the first player in Browns history to lead the NFL in receiving yards (1,646) and became the first player in NFL history with back-to-back 200-yard receiving games.

HC: Ron Rivera
OC: Scott Turner
DC: Steve Wilks

Seems like a decently viable option. I'd imagine Norv Turner comes along as a Sr. Assistant as well.
