2020 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't have a problem with Day being among the highest paid coaches in America.

But I struggle with the notion that football coaches at public universities make 5+mil.
Supply and Demand

I get @col63onel Sanders’ position. I don’t disagree, either from a principle standpoint. I’m actually interested in both arguments for this topic; I don’t know what the appropriate place is.

Cliffs notes of my argument, and I agree there's nuance:

Most* D1 college athletic departments operate in the red and have to borrow money for the school at large. I have an issue with tax dollars being spent on such big coaches salaries at an institution whose primary goals are education

*I haven't looked at figures recently, so I don't have a firm number of how many AD are like this and how much money they need to be subsidized. OSU's AD is annually self sufficient, I believe. They actually donate money back to the school. If most ADs operated like this, I'd be ok with larger salaries, because you aren't taking money from the school.

OSU - the richest "non-profit" in the state!

Ideally, the football and men's basketball programs drive enough to support additional athletic programs as well as renovations throughout the school for athletic purposes.

That is why OSU generally breaks close to even or even under, year over year, because of the money they put back into the athletic programs and facilities.

IMO, if you want really nice facilities for students, and a great football team, you need to pay market price for an elite coach. If $5M is too much, and you'd rather hire a mediocre coach that gets you an 8-4, 7-5 type season, at $3M a year.......I guess that's fine, but when the stadium is 70% full, and the Nike apparel deals suffer, and TV contracts thin out cause the product isn't as great, and then other sports get cut because not enough money is being generated by the football team anymore, that'd kinda be disappointing.

The thing is, plenty of schools are are paying for big name coaches, AND still have to borrow money from the schools to subsidize their athletic departments or are still forced to cut non-revenue sports. There's more to the cost/benefit analysis than just "big name coaches bring in more dollars". And admittedly there's more than "paying coaches too much is a waste" as well. I'd really have to sit down and look at a bunch of numbers to really know.

Not good especially with Crowley already sidelined with an injury. The transfer portal has been kind to us - no idea if anything is cooking there though.

Hopefully an MRI just reveals a sprain or something of the like. Program is insanely discrete about injuries though so idk

That's a big one but hopefully he will be ready week one or atleast by big ten play. Steele Chambers and the rest of the HBs need to take advantage of these extra reps.

I saw word the other day that a targeted OSU RB recruit that went to Indiana instead has just entered the transfer portal..

That is Sampson James. He’d need a special circumstance to allow him to play next year though, as he was a true freshman last season. He is not immediately eligible.

The Big 10 has led an initiative to give all student athletes a one time “free transfer” without penalty, but it’s not in place yet.

If somehow that policy went into effect and OSU landed Sampson, I think he’s immediately the best RB on the roster including whenever Teague gets healthy. It doesn't appear the Big 10'S proposed rule can even be implemented until 2021 at the earliest, and that's if other conferences vote to adopt it.

Letterman Row is confirming a torn Achilles for Master Teague. That’s a tough blow.....hard to imagine him having a big role in next years offense as he rehabs it.

They’re saying 6 months which seems awfully optimistic for a tear.

Crowley should be 100% relatively soon, and Chambers is getting all the reps as #1 RB currently. Feels awful thin there now......Demario McCall and Jalen Gill can provide some 3rd down back reps but neither are between tackles runners. Miyan Williams gets on campus in a few months, but not sure how much you can expect out of him initially.

If there was ever a time to hit the waiver wire, I mean transfer portal, this would be it.
