2020 Bullpen Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The part that stinks was guys coming in to face one batter. They get 6-8 (or whatever the set standard) more warmup pitches on the mound, face one guy and are pulled.

For a casual fan this sucks! You now have two commercial breaks during one of the most tense periods of gameplay of the entire night.

Said pitcher may then only throw potentially as few as a single pitch or two if contact is made.

It wouldn't be as awful if they said, "here's three warmup pitches to get you sighted in on new surroundings and play ball." because you should have been loose from being up and prepared from time in pen. However that's not entirely realistic.

They should have brought back the bullpen carts, drop a Hemi in them and get the pitcher to the mound in 3 seconds where he is only allowed to throw 3 warm ups.

well update on bullpen battle:

NRI list for pitchers:
RHP:
Argenis Angulo
Kyle Dowdy
Cam Hill
Henry Martinez
Jared Robinson
Dalbert Siri
Dominic Leone
Jordan Stephens
LHP
Anthony Gose

Make it look like Nelson, Sandlin, Broom, Morgan etc arent going to be at big league camp. @Derek and anyone else who wants to chime in, what do you think about those arms not getting an invite to spring?

We will have an open spot to start the season (aka Naquins roster spot) so I think one of those guys could try to sneak onto the roster if given the chance. Likely Hill or Robinson of that list who have the best shot in my mind

Is anyone a fan of the 3 batter rule?
I'm willing to let it play out. It's not a perfect solution but willing to try it. MLB had to do something about game time- nobody got time for 4 hour games every night, regardless of what the superfans think. I also think if you don't want juiced baseballs, buzzers and garbage can drums you need to do something to boost offense- and forcing gimick pitchers to face alt-armed hitters is one way to do it. Time for the LOOGYs to bust out the slow mo camera, get in touch with Driveline and learn how to do their job better.

This makes me even more confused in a since Nelson and Sandlin aren’t invited to big league camp. I don’t doubt they can be held in the minors if healthy for long, but odd to me why they weren’t invited.

What do you know about Angulo? Robinson is a very good candidate to make the roster out of spring (in my mind) so I know about him but I don’t know much about Angulo (but if you want to talk about Robinson as well for the peeps who don’t know about him go ahead)

Now that our lineup seems locked in aside from some camp invites, I think the team should look to add one vet reliever to stabilize the pen. Some options:

Sam Dyson
Collin McHugh
Javy Guerra
Fernando Rodney
David Hernandez
Tony Sipp
Josh Tomlin
Luke Gregerson
Nick Vincent
Ryan Buchter
Pat Neshek
Arodys Vizcaíno
Jared Hughes
Cody Allen

Obviously several/most listed would only be on minor league deals. But hopefully the Tribe brings a few in to compete for a job.

I think the MLB is investigating Dyson for domestic abuse

I would love Collin McHugh

If he's healthy, that one is a no brainer.

He was SLIGHTLY down in the metrics and spin, then got shut down because of an elbow. Not sure if that is scaring teams off, but when he's right that is an absolute weapon in the pen.

Yeah, I didn’t follow the situation closely. How much of his issues do you think stems from them trying him as a starter again?

Breaking down the pen:

CL - Hand
6th-8th: Clase, Karinchak, Wittgren
LOOGY: Perez (L)
MR: Adam Cimber

Competition for spots 7-8:
Adam Plutko (out of options)
Hunter Wood (out of options)
James Hoyt
Phil Maton

NRIs in the picture:
Jared Robinson
Cam Hill
Argenis Angulo
Kyle Dowdy
Dominic Leone

Probably quite a bit, but the damage is likely already done if teams are this scared of him.

All depends on the medicals.

IIRC Sam Dyson is hurt and won't pitch in 2020
