2020 Cavs Summer Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So I guess you could say summer camp was a success.
Garland, Porer, Sexton all seemed to have put in the work and significantly improved aspects of their game. Most importantly Windler seems like Kyle Korver reincarnated. Coach got a chance to do some work with different schemes.
So where do we go from here?
Do we really want to add another rookie to this mix? I'm gonna say it now. Trade the pick. With all the coaches moving around, and the cap probably moving down, I think there will be plenty of interesting names on the market.
Fedor quoted an anonymous executive from another team as saying he thinks the Cavs will trade the pick. Gilbert wants them to make a playoff run this year and there probably won't be anybody at #5 that can make much of a difference as a rookie.

Milwaukee's #1 next year could be a lottery pick if Giannis leaves. I'd hold on to that if I were the Cavs. I'd look to trade the #5 and Cedi. I don't see a use for Exum since we have Sexton and Porter at the 2 so if somebody can use a $9.6M expiring contract he could be thrown in as well.

But they might be better off just using the #5 to draft a replacement for Love, who has two years left on his deal. They're thinking Toppin could be that guy.

The Bucks pick is top 10 protected in 2022 and top 10 & 25-30 protected in 2023. Top 8 protected in 2024 then it turns to two second round picks. If the Cavs can use it to move up in the draft, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. If they believe someone like LaMelo is a good fit and talent, I think it's worth spending the asset.

If Gianni's stays it's a late first round pick. If he leaves it probably a pick in the teens. I feel like they will try to compete with Middleton, Bledsoe, etc.

What does Minny want I wonder? hard to pin down their needs. The have a star and another fringe allstar.

It'll be tough...after Giannis, 7 of their next 10 players in minutes played were over 30 last season. I can see them being one of those contenders that totally disintegrates if/when they lose their star.

Our best bet to get a good pick from them is that they have one good year after Giannis leaves and we get a pick in the mid to low teens. Good players come from that range but I wouldn't hold this asset as something that has great value because of the protections. They protected themselves well with it. If Giannis stays they give up a late 1st round and if he leaves they probably give up two second rounders unless they stumble into another star. 2024 is when we can get the best pick but I think we would need alot go wrong for the bucks for that to happen.

If we can get what the front office thinks is a difference maker from moving up to #5 to #1-4, I think it's well worth giving up that asset. The uncertainty with Giannis most likely will give the perception that this could be a better asset than it is.

I think the Warriors might be the easier target to move up. I think Minny will just end up taking the best player from their scouting. They might over think it like the Cavs did with Bennett. I think LaMelo, Edwards, and Wiseman are probably all in play for Minny.

The warriors can split this asset into two by moving down. Maybe even roll #5 into something else after the trade. Bucks pick is something they can use down the line to make themselves better with a trade. It wouldn't surprise me if the Warriors move #2 and just refill their war chest with assets. They might pick up a couple good vets in the process.

Which player(s) would you use to get the pick? Cedi seems like the guy they would potentially want? Would you give them Windler if you could get Ball?

I would give them #5 and the Bucks pick for #2. I'm not sure I'd give up Cedi or Windler, nor do I think the Warriors would really want either one. The Warriors do have a trade exception but it has to be used I think a month before the draft. I don't see them using it unless they get a true impact player because of luxury tax. As much as I like Cedi, he wouldn't be worth the luxury tax payments and lose of flexibility to the Warriors. I think the Cavs would value Windler more than the Warriors. Warriors would probably just see him as a throw in player.

I do think the Warriors want to get a star for #2 if they can. If they can't get that star, I think it's better for them to break up the asset and move some of it to the future, which the bucks pick would do. I could see them doing a Mangini style multiple trade down to future gain assets. Ultimately drafting a player in the late lottery or mid teens while gaining multiple future first round picks to do moves in the future. If they can turn some of their current players to better vets as they trade down it's probably the cherry on for them.

Future draft picks are less risky than young players as assets. Value between teams for a player can vary widely. Teams also have to balance that players value in real time to make sure they are both developing him while not hurting his value. A team can draft someone like Anthony Bennett and have a completely sunked asset in no time at all.

Seems like there's too much uncertainty in that Bucks pick to give it any real value. It could be any year from 2022-24 and the highest it could be is a #9 and that would be in 2024.

Best case for the Cavs is if Giannis leaves and the Bucks have enough talent to stay out of the bottom 10 and end up picking 11-15 in 2022. But if he leaves they probably dump those 30-somethings and start over.

If,Windler stays healthy he'll be better than Korver.

He can do more than shoot. I was really excited about him last year, and was hoping he could make an impact as an older rookie.

I was a little surprised to hear Bickerstaff call him a hunter using language Beilein used for Clarkson last year. I didn't think of Windler as an aggressive offensive weapon finding his own shot. He must be showing something.

I don't mind if he doesn't shoot as well as Duncan Robinson, but I think he can shoot when tightly contested, which seems to give Robinson trouble. Could be really valuable.

When, I saw him play in the Summer League I was highly impressed with him.I'm surprised Bickerstaff said that about Windler because I've always viewed him being a efficient player. I knew he can create his own shot but I've thought he would take what the defense gave him. If,everything Bickerstaff said is true teams gonna have to deal with Sexton,Porter,Garland and Windler. I could see Bickerstaff trying different lineups during the season.

You expect to see Garland, Sexton, Porter AND Windler on the floor at the same time? Even with Drummond or TT at the 5 that's a very small lineup.

With Love as the center! Could be pretty cool 5 out lineup.

I really don't expect them to do that with Windler as a rook, but maybe as his body fills out and you had a finesses guy at PF like Gallinari or something. I know Larry doesn't want to play the 5, but I like the idea of some 5 out lineups with him and Love(very good pairing statistically) and some tall dudes. Maybe Garland(or Porter?), Windler, Cedi, Love Nance.

I do think when you have such a weird roster and some guys are odd, it means you can get some different lineups. OKC had a lot of success with 3 guards, 2 undersized. Dort was played at center offensively, but SG defensively.

I would love to have a coach that plays lineups to create mismatch advantages and so far Bickerstaff has shown that is what he is about. I hope he keeps going for that. I don't want guys constantly played out of position, but taking advantage of versatility is something that can benefit players a lot to expand their games.

No,but I can see two or three of the four in the lineup at the same time though.

Drummond, Love,Nance,Windler,Garland

Drummond,Nance,Windler,Porter,Sexton

and etc
