2020 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Assuming we are in the top 5, Okongwu is the only guy I'm highly interested in. I watched a quite a few USC games and even though he was used primarily as a low post center, he showed a ton of athletism, a soft touch and mostly solid decision making. You have to go back to high school film to see his perimeter skills, but there is certainly some promise there. Looks like a legit 2-way player and already has an NBA body.

Wiseman/Edwards/Ball all have lottery level skills but too many question marks regarding BBIQ and desire level.

I love Toppin, but not for us, a playoff team with solid defensive principals needs to trade up for him, he'll be 15pt/game third option from day 1.

None of the international options jump out at me.

Toppin was only a sophomore? He is 22?

Yeah he took a year off, I believe it was when he had no D1 offers.

I really like the big O too. Solid in the PnR. Like a poster said above, he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time in PnR situations. Plus he's an athletic beast. He knows how to roll.

You are correct that after high school, Toppin had no D1 offers.

So, he went to a prep school before arriving at Dayton. However, he then sat another season (redshirt) because he was academically ineligible.

Sorry if someone already linked to it, but hoopshype posted a nice mock draft compilation last month. Nine players feature in the top-4 of at least one mock draft...here's how I would rank them, overall and for the Cavs. Interested to hear what others think.

Overall:

1a: Ball
1b: Hayes

2a: Wiseman
2b: Haliburton
2c: Okongwu
2d: Edwards

3a: Okoro
3b: Avdija
3c: Toppin

Cavs:

1a. Hayes
2b. Ball

2a: Haliburton
2b: Okongwu
2c: Wiseman
2d: Edwards

3a: Avdija
3b: Okoro
3c: Toppin

A further 14 players feature in the lottery of at least one mock. I've bolded my favorites for the Cavs in a trade-down scenario...who're yours?

Cole Anthony
Tyrese Maxey
RJ Hampton
Theo Maledon
Devin Vassell
Precious Achiuwa
Nico Mannion
Aaron Nesmith
Jaden McDaniels
Saddiq Bey
Patrick Williams
Josh Green
Vernon Carey
Daniel Oturu

Devin Vassell , yes. What's with the Hayes hype?

He's a big, athletic, 18-year-old point guard who can shoot and defend. As close as you're going to get to a prototypical #1 pick in this draft, IMO.

I like your list for the Cavs, Nathan. Not at all interested in a trade down. I don't think there are enough good players for a top 10 this year as it is. I would sooner trade out of this draft than down. But I can't see anyone making it worth our while to trade out.

I understand taking BPA, especially since you can't argue the Cavs have a player who would dictate otherwise, but do we think Koby takes LaMelo or Hayes when it essentially sinks two of his past picks in Sexton and Garland?

If Cavs take either guard, it's an almost definite that the Cavs would need to trade Garland/Sexton and move the keeper to the bench..

This is all assuming you view Porter Jr. as perhaps our most promising piece, but also see him as a pure 2-guard...

Given all that, I have a hard time believing they'd take either.. Whether they should or not, is another story, but given Altman has taken Sexton, Garland, Porter Jr., Windler and signed Cedi to an extension, I'm more inclined to believe he addresses a frontline position...

Smooth - I suspect you're right, but would note that Koby also signed Nance and Love to big contract extensions and might well re-sign TT this offseason. Also, I think Sexton is easily our most promising young player.

I might prefer Josh Green in a trade down scenario. I like Vassell too but the hype seems a little overblown at this point. I've seen Vassell mocked in the top 8 which seems a little too high for my taste.

Has anyone else noticed how awful this year's draft is at free throw shooting in particular? Here's the top 20 prospects according to Tankathon (other sites obviously vary), along with their FT% and their FTAr. FTAr, or free throw attempt rate, is a measure of how many FTAs a player gets per field goal attempt. Obviously higher is better; for scale, James Harden has a career high FTr of .592 which is ridiculously high:

1) LaMelo Ball - 72.3% on .231
2) Onyeka Okongwu - 72.0% on .501
3) James Wiseman - 70.4% on .038
4) Killian Hayes - 87.6% on .313
5) Tyrese Haliburton - 82.2% on .184
6) Anthony Edwards - 77.2% on .339
7) Obi Toppin - 70.2% on .364
8) RJ Hampton - 67.9% on .358
9) Deni Advija - 52% on .431
10) Aleksej Pokusevski - 78.3% on .219
11) Devin Vassell - 73.8% on .221
12) Josh Green - 78.0% on .378
13) Isaac Okoro - 67.4% on .541
14) Tyler Bey - 74.3% on .693
15) Paul Reed - 73.8% on .227
16) Jalen Smith - 75% on .474
17) Cole Anthony - 75% on .371
18) Saddiq Bey - 76.9% on .248
19) Kira Lewis Jr - 80.2% on .292
20) Tyrese Maxey - 83.3% on .342

What you'll notice is that not a single one managed to combine a high FTr with a high percentage. The guys which have elite percentages like Hayes, Haliiburton, and Maxey only manage relatively mundane (or in Haliburton's case, dreadful) FTr numbers. The guys who really rack up the FT attempts, like Tyler Bey and Onyeka Okongwu are only mediocre FT shooters. There's nobody who is constantly getting to the line and also making them at a high rate.

If BPA and need are that far out of whack, you trade the pick.

In basketball always take the best player

The problem is the best player in this draft is so subjective..

The other issue is there don't appear to be clear-cut tiers and if you have a bunch of guys rated similarly, at that point need should play a factor in delineating the tiers...

Both of which why there's so much debate and really so many different ways the Cavs can go...
