2020 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The most frustrating thing about this draft is that, despite the lack of obvious star power, it would be the perfect draft to find a complement to Sexton in the backcourt with all the taller guards set to go in the lottery. Really wishing we would have done the trade with Phoenix where we give up #4 for Dario (or Bridges/other prospect) and #11 (Cam Johnson/PJ Washington), though hindsight etc etc.
We already have a guy that complements Sexton very well in Porter Jr. We need Wiseman badly.
Wiseman
Achiuwa
Saddiq Bey
Ty-Shon Alexander
Those would be my draft targets.

I'm definitely leaning toward either Wiseman or Okongwu, but we do not have a good backcourt complement for Sexton yet.

We need somebody capable of defending big guards at a high level while being able to act as the primary playmaker on offense. As a smaller scoring guard, who struggles defensively, finding a fit alongside Sexton is not the easiest task.

The Garland pick fucked us pretty bad. Doesn't matter if he becomes good or not.

It reminded me so much of the Waiters pick. A head coach with a particular backcourt vision falling in love with a player who supposedly will fit his dual-combo guard "system". Maybe that works if you know you have a proven HOF-caliber HC whose "vision" and talent evaluation you trust, but we didn't have that in either case.

Koby Altman getting a new contract after showing zero idea how to build a modern NBA basketball team is super concerning to me

I don't dislike Bey, but he'd be kind of redundant with Cedi right?

I'm hoping it plays out like the 1987 Cavs.

Embry had just drafted Daugherty and Harper in the first round, and traded a future 2nd rounder to Dallas for Georgia Tech point guard Mark Price. Price looked like a solid backup point guard. He also looked like he might be deacon of an Episcopalian parish. So in the 1987 draft Embry uses a lottery pick on Kevin Johnson. It's great value because this was a very good point guard draft. He had also flipped the starting point guard John Bagley for 15th overall pick Dell Curry, but that is a topic for another day.

So as the 1987 season plays out, it becomes clear Price is more than a backup point guard who looks like an Allstate broker, he is a legit top five point guard. As we all know, that ended in a near perfect trade with the Suns which brought Larry Nance to the Cavs as a combo forward. If Embry had just protected Curry instead of Mike Sanders in the expansion draft the Cavs pick up at least one championship before MJ takes over the league... and maybe another championship later when Steph Curry grows up a Cavaliers fan, but I digress.

Anyways back to the present. The Cavs will say publicly that the Sexland backcourt can work, but we all know it doesn't. However, that doesn't mean the Cavs have to rush the process. We don't know who is the Kevin Johnson and who is the Mark Price yet. If Garland was healthier at the start of the season and the season wasn't cut short, maybe this would be a good time for a trade. I think they are going to focus on the frontcourt in this draft and figure out trades once Garland is less of a mystery.

Only the Cavs can mess up a pick because the guy they thought their latest pick would replace got too good.

I'd say it depends on how the Cavs view Osman. I like Cedi, if we can't land a 3 in this draft, I'm fine with him as our starting SF.

It turned out to be not as bad, considering we ended up drafting Porter Jr. in the same draft. I think the Cavs can make up for it by trading him before his value plummets. I do like his potential & he would've been a top 10 pick regardless. I just like Sexton more, but Garland is too good to come off the bench for us imo.

I am wondering how replace Cedi unless we get someone who is really good. He shoots and passes well, but struggles playing with Sexton. I would love to start KPJ at the 2 and have Cedi as Backup 2 paired with Garland. Maybe Windler can start, but it won't be from the jump.

What does Garland have to do with Porter Jr?
