2020 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Edwards is gonna have his Hands full on that Georgia team for a guy that young. I’m interested in seeing how he handles the step up in competition and responsibility because if he keeps his head above water in that situation I think he’s a no brainer pick.

Draft looks real shitty.
I mean, some itneresting international prospects, but other than that, what the heck do we do?
really wish it was 2021.

I'll tell you what, if Garland is the truth, we need to surround him with low usage players who are also capable defensively.
No one really stands out to me in this draft who is head and shoulders above the rest. Anthony Edwards looks good in a vacuum, but not sure about his fit with Garland. We do not need another iso scorer on this team who will take the ball away from Garland.

That's why we really, really have to see what we have in Windler this year. If he looks great and a great fit with DG, then it makes it so much easier, and then we can focus on other positions. We need to get him on the court asap..healthy ofcourse.

What a time to be bad...not.
If only we had another high pick like 2011 and were able to get both Garland and Hunter. Feel Hunter would be the perfect compliment wing type for him

Yeah, that was really too bad.

If the draft ends up playing out that way I hope they choose to go about it the way I initially wanted us to it this year and just go for the most boring ass high floor player available honestly. Garland looks good and I'm happy with the pick but I just think rolling the dice on lottery picks year after year ends up biting you in the ass in the long term.

So what do you propose?

I think we really need to accumulate mid to late 1st round picks and early 2nds ASAP, somehow. We need those high floor 3 and D players. WE need to start surrounding our lottery guys with young talent, but not necessarily players that think/projected to be stars (which doesn't always happen) and therefore change the complexion, chemistry on the team.

Every time that a new high lottery player joins a team, he will want to prove himself by acting like a franchise player, and the player that was selected a year ago will almost be forced to take a back seat. Or the new player that was again selected in the high lottery is forced to take a back seat because the player that was selected a year before wants to show that he is better or some shit like that. Both options are not ideal because it has the potential to stagnant one's or both players growth as well as sabotage the chemistry on the team and also the relationship between both players.

That's why integrating a high lottery big man is much easier than integrating a wing/pg for example. A big man can focus on defense, rim running, lob, occasional spot up shot, etc.

What comes to mind is Kyrie/Waiters when talking about integrating a SG that year later when you already have you franchise PG. Especially a player that is ball dominant.

Anthony Edwards looks like the real deal, and the difference between Waiters and him is that:
1. He looks like a smart kid.
2.He can shoot the ball from all areas of the court which will make his integration that much easier.
3.Great finisher

Still, he is much, much better with the ball and shooting off the dribble. Needs to get better as a spot up shooter. Not what I consider an ideal fit next to Garland because I rather build a team with a Klay Thompson type wing rather than an Oladipo. I think. It's just easier to integrate.

I just think that trying to integrate those players on a team that already has a franchise PG is always hard. And at times those players sometimes take years before they figure it out in the NBA, and sometimes it's not on the teams that drafted them.

We need a vision. We need to think like the Spurs, Warriors, even the Hawks have a vision.. If you don't have a vision and an idea on how to build your team you end up like the Magic. Guaranteed.

I'm not really proposing anything concrete yet, because nobody knows what the draft is going to end up looking like right now. I think my point more generally speaking is that we shouldn't be afraid to do what Atlanta essentially did this year when they moved up and drafted Deandre Hunter even though plenty of people didn't see him as having "top 5 upside". They assessed the class, realized that that outside of the top 3, unless you were looking for a PG, the risk involved in upside picks was too high to potentially waste a lottery pick on in that range, and so they went instead for the surest thing that still filled a massive need for them, both in the short term and the long term.

I guess I just don't want the Cavs to get blinded by big game hunting going into the draft and I hope they realize that players in the vein of Deandre Hunter, et al. are still integral to building a roster core going forward.

That being said, I think Edwards, if he pans out is one of those guys I'd be comfortable taking with a high pick with the expectation of being a key piece and potential star player going forward, and while I agree that it's easier in theory to build around a Klay type than a 'Dipo I still think that is very much down to context. Like yes, if you have a Steph Curry on your team and another high level isolation scorer like KD, it makes sense that you don't really want/need to go hunting for more players who can score with the ball in their hands. At that point you take the off ball movement and defense every single day. But remember those Warriors teams before Durant when it was largely Curry or Draymond doing the lead ballhandling duties. Not having other Iso scoring threats ended up hurting them somewhat and that's depite being one of the greatest teams ever.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that both secondary ballhandling and scoring and off ball movement and floor spacing are important to roster construction, which I guess isn't a very exciting conclusion, lol. I just think the risk involved when drafting for the former is much higher and you should make sure that you're getting what you want when doing it.

There is no way Ball is making the All-NBL team unless they gift it to him for publicity, just not a good shooter yet

Lamelo v RJ just ended. Both struggled. Lamelo’s team got smashed. Lamelo really ended up on the wrong team, should be playing in Melbourne for the Phoenix.. oh well

Wait, do people really hate this draft?

Early international summary (in no particular order, per-40 pace adjusted):

Ball (NBL): 15.9 points (41% true shooting), 7.5 boards, 7.1 assists, 2.4 stl+blk, 2.9 turnovers

Hampton (NBL): 15.3 points (51% true shooting), 8.5 boards, 3.4 assists, 4.7 stl+blk, 2.1 turnovers

Avdija (BSL, Euroleague): 12.7 points (48% true shooting), 10.0 boards, 2.0 assists, 3.3 stl+blk, 2.0 turnovers

Hayes (BBL, Eurocup): 14.7 points (55% true shooting), 4.4 boards, 9.1 assists, 3.4 stl+blk, 7.8 turnovers

Maledon (LNB, Euroleague): 12.9 points (47% true shooting), 4.3 boards, 8.0 assists, 0.6 stl+blk, 3.7 turnovers

The biggest problem I see, for the Cavs specifically, is it is pretty guard heavy......and we have spent two top 8 picks on guards in consecutive seasons. Maybe Sexton flames out and we move on but both he and Garland look like keepers, at least to me. If not a starter, Collin is a Lou Williams type potential 6th man of the the year providing scoring and shooting off the bench.

It also appears Beilein is too good of a coach for this team to just stink. We are already getting more out of guys like TT, Clarkson, Nance than I was expecting. And Love has settled in as a rebounding / passing engine in this system. So with only a lottery long shot for Wiseman, it's tough to even envision who fits in to this roster.

Out of the wings, just practice reports, I have heard the most glowing reviews about Josh Green. The Arizona coaches LOVE him. The singular thing everyone has said about him is he's tough as nails and he just plays really hard. Seeing that about Green gets you excited.....because he has some really nice tools. And if he pairs those physical tools with toughness and effort, a player like that can be potentially special.

I know we just drafted some guards but if we luck into the #1 pick there's just no way I'm not taking Anthony Edwards.

His level of athleticism and pure ability is so unbelievably high that I actually think he's going to be one of those generational 'cant miss' talents.

Was there a game a recently?

I've seen more than a few places basically label him a bigger Victor Oladipo and if that is truly the case.... I mean, you can't not pick him up. Even with Sexton and Garland already filling up the guard spots you have to do it. That size and athleticism is paramount to improving our perimeter defense and it also provides a different mode of attack that we simply don't have right now, and maybe never really have had at the guard positions?
