2020 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wouldn't mind if we came away from the draft with a combo like Haliburton + Tillman (or similar players). Defensively versatile guys who are really smart on offense and facilitate ball movement.

Not the highest potential but our team game would be great with Sexton's ceiling still not exactly determined.

Wait people want to take a pg a third straight year who seems to have less potential then the guys drafted the last two years with the team desperate for wing players ? You guys are an interesting bunch.

Ok, so here's the depth chart at the moment...

PG: Garland
SG: Sexton, KPJ, Exum
SF: Osman, Windler
PF: Love, Nance
C: Drummond

How in the world are we "desperate for wings"? Where did this notion come from? That's where we're deepest in terms of possible core guys and overall. We're thin at PG, where we only have Garland, who was barely competent at his best and absolutely terrible at his worst. And we're thin at center, where we just have Drummond who's probably gone next summer if not sooner. Those are the positions where it makes most sense to use a top-5 pick.

Assuming the top 4 go, in some order, Edwards, Ball, Wiseman and Avdija who's the surefire stud wing left for us at 5?

The same reasons I brought up last night. A contender had four small forward type players. Some might be more of a forward tweener, some might be a shooting guard/small forward tweener... But a good team doesn't have just two.

Right now the Cavs front office is saying they will likely not pick a point guard in the top five and they view Porter as a shooting guard. Those statements match up with the fact they were giving Cedi more minutes than he could handle, and Sexton is short for a shooting guard.

Sexton is not a wing. Exum is a journeyman pg, Windler has never played a second in the nba and coming off a major injury Cedi has no business starting. You got killed trying to defend wings the past two years. Yes you need a wing to go along with Porter, who although I love still has some development ahead of him. Drafting a third pg who is not an elite prospect who is a below average shooter, Is setting yourself up to be fired as a GM in my opinion. If we were taking about A Cade Cunningham type prospect then this a different conversation, but the guy you guys want is no where near that level.

Haliburton is a big guard with point guard skills and the length/size to defend SGs. With his length and height, I wouldn't count out him being able to guard SF when he fills out. He also has played off the ball alot in college.

I do think Deni or LeMelo would be better fits but I think there is a talent drop off after that for wing size players. Haliburton is a good playmaker and a very good 3 point shooter despite his odd mechanics. He shot over 40% from 3 and over 50% from the field both years in college. That goes along shooting 82% from the line and 6.3 assist per game in his second year.

It will be interesting to see what he measures out at. He might measure in height and wingspan very close to the wing players in this draft.

Hard for me to see Halliburton as a bad shooter given his college numbers. Okoro OTOH . . . .

So much can change between now and the draft. Players will be tested and measured. Players will hold workouts.

I personally have a top four in this draft and reserve the right to declare my fifth after the process is further along. I doubt franchises would want to compose a list before all of the predraft process concludes, we can too.

Ok...if you include tweeners, we have Cedi, KPJ, Nance, and Windler to work with. Not all of them will pan out, of course, but that's 4 real NBA players who should be getting regular minutes next season.

I don't know where they said they view Porter as a shooting guard, but it seems silly to pigeonhole him as such given that Sexton has the starting SG spot locked down (unless we want to revisit the Sexton PG experiment, and I don't think anyone's eager to do that). Optimistically, KPJ will eventually grow into the starting SF spot, and Cedi will take on a smaller bench role backing up Sexton at SG and KPJ at SF.

If we're dead set on sticking with Garland at PG, what about the frontcourt? Nance is the only guy we have who could be part of our future at PF or C. Clearly we need more than 1 big, so wouldn't Okongwu be a nice blend of fit and BPA?

Sexton's not a wing, but he's not a point guard either. We're in agreement about that, right? What about Exum, does anyone want to see him running the offense next year? Didn't think so. Garland's the only guy on the roster who has anything approaching NBA point guard skills, and he was a trainwreck for most of last year.

Haliburton isn't Cade Cunningham, but I think it's a dangerous to think that if we pass on a PG this year, we can simply draft Cade next year if Garland doesn't pan out. Especially with the new lottery system, there's a very good chance we won't have that opportunity, and then we're looking at a 4th straight year without a real point guard. That's inexcusable. We should fill that need now while we have the chance.

Also don't get the knock that Haliburton is a "below average shooter." Out of all our options at #5, only Vassell could possibly make the case that he's a better shooter.

What? No...there's no evidence that those guys can play PG. In the cases of Sexton and Exum, there's actually a lot of evidence to the contrary, where teams tried unsuccessfully to play them at PG!

We're coming off a season where we had the worst assist:TO numbers in the league, and we're probably not bringing back our best player in that area (Delly). It would be suicidal to go into this season without adding a PG, whether by draft or trade or FA.

Hey, I don't know exactly what the Cavs have in mind. They may move Exum and a young player to completely change the needs of the team.

I do know that Joe Vardon of The Athletic has some insight into what the front office is looking to do, and he has said on the Wine and Gold podcast:

1. The Cavs are unlikely to draft a guard

2. They believe Kevin Porter Jr. Is "the guy" on the roster so far

and lastly

3. They view Porter as a shooting guard.

I ripped this off of Hoopshype:

“I think the other big takeaways that I have from this year, the belief in Kevin Porter Jr. It’s now gone into the coaching staff, it’s now gone into the players. This organization believes that he’s the one. If there is a focal point, if there is somebody that’s going to change the trajectory of this rebuild and change the timeline potentially of this rebuild, it’s going to be him.”

So if they are saying this 6'4 (6'5.5 in shoes) kid is at his best at shooting guard, that is better evidence than what one guy on RCF believes.

So...what do they view Sexton as? I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand the internal logic the Cavs are working with. Are they benching him in favor of KPJ? Moving him back to PG? Something else I haven't thought of?

Sexton will probably be Jordan Clarkson 2.0
Or, he may be traded because he exceeded expectations in the second year
