The same reasons I brought up last night. A contender had four small forward type players. Some might be more of a forward tweener, some might be a shooting guard/small forward tweener... But a good team doesn't have just two.
Right now the Cavs front office is saying they will likely not pick a point guard in the top five and they view Porter as a shooting guard. Those statements match up with the fact they were giving Cedi more minutes than he could handle, and Sexton is short for a shooting guard.
Ok...if you include tweeners, we have Cedi, KPJ, Nance, and Windler to work with. Not all of them will pan out, of course, but that's 4 real NBA players who should be getting regular minutes next season.
I don't know where they said they view Porter as a shooting guard, but it seems silly to pigeonhole him as such given that Sexton has the starting SG spot locked down (unless we want to revisit the Sexton PG experiment, and I don't think anyone's eager to do that). Optimistically, KPJ will eventually grow into the starting SF spot, and Cedi will take on a smaller bench role backing up Sexton at SG and KPJ at SF.
If we're dead set on sticking with Garland at PG, what about the frontcourt? Nance is the only guy we have who could be part of our future at PF or C. Clearly we need more than 1 big, so wouldn't Okongwu be a nice blend of fit and BPA?
Sexton is not a wing. Exum is a journeyman pg, Windler has never played a second in the nba and coming off a major injury Cedi has no business starting. You got killed trying to defend wings the past two years. Yes you need a wing to go along with Porter, who although I love still has some development ahead of him. Drafting a third pg who is not an elite prospect who is a below average shooter, Is setting yourself up to be fired as a GM in my opinion. If we were taking about A Cade Cunningham type prospect then this a different conversation, but the guy you guys want is no where near that level.
Sexton's not a wing, but he's not a point guard either. We're in agreement about that, right? What about Exum, does anyone want to see him running the offense next year? Didn't think so. Garland's the only guy on the roster who has anything approaching NBA point guard skills, and he was a trainwreck for most of last year.
Haliburton isn't Cade Cunningham, but I think it's a dangerous to think that if we pass on a PG this year, we can simply draft Cade next year if Garland doesn't pan out. Especially with the new lottery system, there's a very good chance we won't have that opportunity, and then we're looking at a 4th straight year without a real point guard. That's inexcusable. We should fill that need now while we have the chance.
Also don't get the knock that Haliburton is a "below average shooter." Out of all our options at #5, only Vassell could possibly make the case that he's a better shooter.
