The Donovan Peoples-Jones Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
UofM lives rent-free in OSUs head.
OSU beats UofM at everything.
Its really strange.
Michigan fans aren't any less into the rivalry than Ohio State fans are. You just don't hear the noise because they've been getting their ass whooped for 20 years. The most you hear from them these days is excuses about mythical bagmen and online classes :chuckle:

Speaking of the player in this thread, I do think DPJ is actually equipped to be a player that stays out of the white wash of things like this.

He seems aware of what typically happens here and he isn't even giving the line of questioning any oxygen. He's focusing on his professional career and it doesn't seem like he really has time for stuff like this, which is probably a good thing.

Smart by him.

It's the best way to go about it; don't entertain the media's bullshit narratives. Unfortunate that he even has to be asked about it though, but there's nothing anyone here can do about it.

I agree, this doesn't seem like it will be an issue whatsoever, assuming the media drops it...

From a recent article today:

Those numbers — 12.9 yards per catch, 35.9 yards per game — had ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. wondering aloud last month whether the 6-foot-2, 212-pound Peoples-Jones was an underachiever.

“I don’t think that’s a fair criticism,” Peoples-Jones said. “I did what I could do when I had the opportunity. It honestly doesn’t matter now — I’m looking at how to get better. I’m looking to do everything I can for the Browns’ offense and help the team in general.”

-----------

The other thing that was a little eye opening, given his athletic testing, was Peoples-Jones said he should have ran faster in the 40. And that his time in INDY was not his fastest electronic time.

It's possible that the only reason the Browns ended up with him, where they did, is because school pro-days were cut short.

I'd imagine if someone like DPJ, with his talent and athletic performance at the combine, then also went on to drop his 40 time at his pro day, that he would have been gone far earlier than the 6th.

Sorry I brought up dropping the sc, but getting this thread back on track like you did......Can anyone lookup his catches vs targets then look up the team as a whole? Was he better at catching his targets than his teammates? I think that would be an important stat as clearly DPJ was able to get open even if the QB couldn't get him the ball because of a weird offense they ran.

I can dig around for these numbers but certainly the thing that really hurt DPJ was that it seemed like Michigan could never find the right mix of scheme / QB, to actually unlock his talent.

Patterson was the best QB he played with but Shea was good at moving the pocket, throwing on the run and spreading the ball through the short and intermediate areas of the field. He was not a guy who was at all good at consistently pushing the ball down the field vertically.

That mix caused Michigan to do two things with DPJ.....1. It kicked him inside more, in the slot.....far more snaps than you would have liked 2. Because of that, it asked him to run routes that maybe he wasn't great at running (in comparison to more vertical route trees, where he could really show off his seamless vertical cut skills).

I think there's still a healthy failure rate with anyone who underperforms like DPJ did statistically but I also think he profiles how most guys who succeed typically do. I.e. he has discernible skill in a role that is valuable to a play action team (someone who can challenge a defense vertically) and he contributes in areas 3rd receivers have to contribute: Willing and good blocker, Return man, special teams gunner. I think that is more so why people should get their hopes up about him.....is that he has skills as a blocker and special teams player, that will buy him time to settle in and contribute as a pass catcher.

Was awesome to see DPJ step up when given the opportunity. His blocking ability alone has earned him snaps, but he made the most of his targets yesterday as well. He looks like a legitimate NFL WR.

He has been my dude since we drafted him. I really think he can be very good. His 45 inch vert at the combine is something special, he should be a red zone threat along with out TE's

DPJ has all the talent in the world and seems like a genuinely good kid. Just criminally underutilized at Michigan. Rooting for him hard. When is the last time we legitimately hit on a WR like Pitt seems to do every year? We are due.

He had a great game but what I’ve seen from him is such a small sample size, I need to see more to know that he’s actually capable of being a reliable WR option going forward.

Bump.

Dude absolutely balled out against the Titans. Was huge how he and Higgins stepped up to replace what Hodge had produced the week prior and establish a lil more rhythm with QB #6. Landry will always be doing his thing and we are very fortunate for that consistency at a volatile position.

Sure he had a drop that would have had him in the endzone a second time. Happens to all players on occasion at times. Would like to see him catch with his hands and not trap against his chest more. As Baker frequently fires in a ball with heat rifling past DBs and sometimes you have to snatch those and not trap them for greater completion odds.

But DPJ looked suuuuper promising in the return game as well. Had one holding call on one to move us back, but I think he'll breakout for a giant punt return prior to this season wrapping up.

Has always had the skills, abilities, and proper attitude. It is just now that he's seemingly finally getting the practice reps, rhythm with Baker, and has been coached up to NFL level and tactics.

Most importantly he's getting targeted. And throughout the year thus far, when they go to DPJ downfield BIG things happen.

He's due fore a game breaking Punt Return. may not be for a TD but I could see a late game scenario where we need to put a team away with field position.

I’ll go for a deeper cut and say on offense, Donovan Peoples Jones is going to make himself a Cleveland-area household name. He’s going to challenge Higgins for that third WR role and is going to be a player fans ask why he’s not on the field more.
