2020 NFL Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How many times has Urban retired for the "right reasons", only to pop up 18-24 months later?

I'd imagine the bodies are buried somewhere.......probably will be one hell of an SI story one day.

Two times.

And the last one was obviously nonsense and everyone, including all of us here, knew it. They kindly asked him to leave due to the Zach Smith stuff.

Obviously we’re all thrilled the way it worked out with Stefanski, but there was a better than zero chance this time last year this exact combo was going to be the HC/OC pairing for the Browns.

I know Saleh really impressed the Browns in his interview and am pretty confident he at least gave them another candidate to consider. Interested to see how he does with the Jets.

To be honest, Saleh was my first choice a year ago.

Do we think Saleh will be a better head coach than Urban?

Looks like Arthur Smith is going to be the guy in Atlanta. Another wide zone acolyte landing a head coaching gig. It's the new hotness.

The Shanahan offense is going to be the most popular in the league very soon.

I would say it already is, there just aren't enough coaches fully indoctrinated into it to run it league wide yet.

Want to hear something ridiculous?

The 2013 Washington Redskins had...

Kyle Shanahan (current HC of 49ers)
Sean McVay (current HC of Rams)
Matt LaFleur (current HC of Packers)
Mike McDaniel (current OC of 49ers)

...on their offensive staff. They went 3-13.

I like the Saleh/LaFleur tandem better than Urban but Urban has the better situation for sure. Walking into Trevor Lawrence, $80 mil in cap space, a bunch of early picks, and an offense that already has Robinson/Chark/Shenault. Plus, the AFC south is going to be a lot weaker than the AFC East, at least on paper, for the forseeable future.

As a Browns fan, as exciting as it is to see this team finally have some success and should continue to for years to come... it is a little frustrating when you look at the QB situation of the AFC versus the NFC for the near future. It's ridiculous how imbalanced the AFC and NFC are as far as QB situation is for each team going into next year and the future.

AFC:
Bills - Josh Allen
Dolphins - Tua?
Jets - ? (likely drafting someone)
Patriots - ? (don't see next years starter on their current roster)

Browns - Baker
Bengals - Burrow
Ravens - Lamar Jackson
Steelers - ? (Ben probably retires, if not who knows)

Colts - ? (Rivers probably retires, if not then who knows, Brissett isn't the answer though)
Jaguars - Lawrence
Texans - Watson (if he doesn't demand a trade)
Titans - Tannehill (for at least the next few years)

Broncos - ? (Lock isnt the answer)
Chiefs - Mahomes
Chargers - Herbert
Raiders - Carr

NFC:
Cowboys - Dak (maybe)
Eagles - Hurts?
Giants - Daniel Jones (good luck with that)
WFT - ? (Smith retiring, Haskins gone, Kyle Allen is JAG... who knows)

Bears - ? (Trubisky sucks and he's gone anyway)
Lions - Stafford (could be on the move this year or next)
Packers - Rodgers (still elite, but getting up there in age)
Vikings - Cousins (lol)

Bucs - Brady (for another year or two)
Falcons - Matt Ryan (see Stafford)
Panthers - ? (Bridgewater aint it)
Saints - ? (Brees retiring - who knows what they do this offseason)

Cardinals - Kyler Murray
49ers - ? (Jimmy G looks done there)
Rams - Goff (for now)
Seahawks - Russell Wilson

I count 8 franchise QBs in the AFC (so, half the teams) and some other solid starters like Tannehill and Carr. The NFC has Wilson, Murray, and Dak as long term options. And Dak and Murray may rank behind any of the 8 "franchise" type guys in the AFC. Rodgers is obviously still elite but for how much longer? Brees is retiring, Brady has a year or two left in him, but other than that it's a bunch of ? marks or meh type guys (Jones, Cousins, Goff).

I'm fascinated to see how Meyer fills out his staff. Gotta assume he's going to lean heavily on guys with NFL experience.

Although maybe not...

I'm thinking Lovo will be more of an ops guy. That was his purview at Florida, OSU, Houston and Texas.

It does look like Meyer is talking to Raheem Morris about the DC job in Jacksonville. Makes sense considering Morris' NFL HC experience.

On the offensive side of the ball, it looks like Scott Linehan may be an option which... woof. That connection goes all the way back to Meyer's Bowling Green days when he visited Linehan at Louisville to learn more about their spread offense.

None of the names associated with Urb's staff have me optimistic for him.

Although he came back to coaching to coach Trevor Lawrence, so he must be confident he can get some things done.

On the surface I agree

But things change FAST in the NFL

2 years ago Wentz and Goff were future top 5 QBs set to be a rivalry atop the NFC for years

Lawrence hasn’t even taken an NFL snap. Burrow and Herbert could easily take a step back like Mayfield did after his rookie year.

As of now the AFC looks in much better position, but there’s a long list of guys who were prematurely annointed after a few seasons that have severely regressed.

Very interested to see if Allen and Jackson keep trending upward after their OCs leave.
Daboll will for sure get a HC gig, most likely the Chargers. Will be interesting to see if Roman gets an opportunity finally as well.
If Philly believes Hurts is the answer, he could be a good option there.
