in 2016: Hit majority of starts (57) & at bats (211) in the 6th spot for Boston
in 2017: Hit 4th in lineup in 134 games
in 2018: Hit 4th in lineup in 103 games

He ABSOLUTELY struggled with injuries and performance in 2019. I think someone will make him a MLB offer (heck a rebuilding team could bring him in to be a on-field coach/ help for younger players) so waiting to swoop in with a minor contract with NRI to spring training IMHO is a mistake.

The question then becomes how much are we willing to pay on a reclamation project as well.

To fit the bill for replacing Kipnis, there is still Kipnis on the market. Then there is Gyorko, Duffy, Shaw, Yolmer Sanchez all out there. Sanchez is a defensive first type of guy, Gyorko, Duffy and Shaw all lost 19 to injuries. Gyorko and Shaw both though have had 30 HR seasons.

I am also would be tempted to invite Souza on a NRI since he lost most of 18 and 19 due to injuries. Souza is just the type of guy Cleveland always seems to bring in. Also Caleb Joesph from The DBacks as well is another NRI target since we lack catchers at AAA and Taijan Walker, if healthy enough could be another target as well. Shoot I would take all three of the guys the DBacks cut into camp on NRI invites.

$100M for a guy who has never thrown for more than 200 innings in a season, and mediocre metrics throughout the last three years.

Good luck with all that...

Looks like the official number is $118m

Zach Wheeler to the Phillies

Glad neither the White Sox or Twins grabbed him

He isn't good. Any fan of the AL Central should have hoped Twins or Whitesox won the bidding. His contract seems a lot like Jordan Zimmerman on Tigers. Good stuff but major health concerns. Mets fans in particular should be thrilled now dude will get lit up in Phillies extremely hitter friendly park. I see zero chance of this ending well for the Phillies.

He isn't good.

I mean, objectively not true at all.

Sure, he's overpaid and the injury concerns are there. I'd prefer my division rivals don't get good players.

I mean It's 100 percent true. He's not good. He's a number 3 starter who just got ace money. I don't know what makes you think he's good. He's average at best and thats pushing it. Its possible for players to have good "Stuff" but not be good pitchers. That's Wheeler. Just wait until midseason when dudes getting lit up like a Christmas Tree in Philly.

Wheeler is pretty solid, has a 3.37 FIP & 1.19 WHIP the past two seasons.

Vastly, vastly overpaid though.

He lies somewhere between “good” and “bad” in my opinion. He’s got good stuff, he’s pretty solid, but he’s not going to live up to that contract. He’s definitely not good though.

$120M = ace money

Whew.

No doubt an overpay. But like I said above and MadThinker just said, overpay or not, he's still a good pitcher and our division rivals are lacking in that department.

Guess you look at it differently. He's an average pitcher getting ace money. That would kill a midmarket financially. It easily would have set the Twins back. Whitesox may have been able to take the financial hit though. Apparently both teams are in a bidding war for Bumgarner who is better then Wheeler.

Once again, that’s not ace money.

And MadBum used to be better than Wheeler. Now they’re roughly equals, or...not.

Given that Wheeler was easily more valuable in 2019.
