2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Addressing the first part, certainly true to this point. The addition of DeShields makes Allen's future murky though, regardless of what happens with Zimmer

As far as the 2nd part goes, it depends. Like the 39% K rate from 2018 certainly isn't going to play in the big leagues. Health is the biggest factor in saving his major league career. Even if he is at best a .670 - .700 or so OPS type of guy going forward, I think plenty of teams would be willing to take that rough offensive production for an elite defensive CF
If he could be a .700 OPS ish and 85 wRC+ guy offensively, he could play based off how good his glove is

I love Third Leg Greg as much as anyone, but Zimmer has power that Greg never will. Greg's one plus over Zimmer is speed and even that is not a big advantage, as Zimmer is deceptively fast (at least before Zimmer's injuries). Zimmer's issue is making contact to use all those tools. Greg is Alex Cole born in the wrong era. I know the club was irked he didn't do winter ball but you can't write off his skill set, not yet.

I don't think it's even close--Zimmer is a much faster player than Allen.

There's only one reason I can think of why someone would assume Allen's the faster player... :detective:

Zimmer is deceptively fast? I thought his top-notch speed was well-known. Allen is fast, but he's no Zimmer.

Maybe deceptively fast from the perspective that his strides are so long that is doesn't look like he's moving as quickly as it might for a shorter player. Or his speed looks effortless, like a Terrelle Pryor

Allen - 209 SB in 710 games= .294 steals per game
Zimmer - 139 SB in 527 Games= .263 steals per game

Looking at their big league numbers. But again, its rather even.

Nor is independently looking at stolen bases answering the question of who is faster, their running speed would determine that.

Very true, but, being an analytics guy such as yourself, looking at stolen bases would be the better projection than simply asking "who can run faster".

No, it wouldn't.

Because there are numerous other variables which come into play in order for a player to have an opportunity to steal a base, like OBP, total plate appearances, etc.

Which is why, in a discussion about who is faster, its best to use analytics that determine who is actually faster and doesn't rely on other variables, not subjective measures like Stolen Bases.

Yes, of course.

But the point is - "who is faster" is rather irrelevant. It's fun to discuss, however.

Scouting reports have Allen 60/60 and Zimmer 55/55

If you want to talk defense

Allen also has a minor league GG. That might not sound like much, but GG's in the minors are for the entire minor leagues at the position. At the same time, guys like Zimmer and Buxton had graduated to the majors.

Scouting reports I see

Allen 50/50 arm, 50/55 defense, Zimmer 60/60 arm, 55/55 defense

Zimmer made an adjustment to his swing last year in the minors, and it showed promise in limited play last year. I hope this change can carry over to the majors as if he just hits .250, with his defense, speed and power combo, he could be an excellent OF for years to come. Zimmer's ceiling is high, but his floor is also very low.

Zimmer by far is the better prospect and Zimmer does have better flat out speed than Allen. That being said it is like comparing a guy who goes a 4.2 to a 4.3 in a sense. They both have really good speed at the end of the day, but Zimmer would win in a sprint. Luplow is actually one with the deceptive speed to be honest. Now that being said DeShields is listed as faster than Zimmer btw.

Allen to me compared more to Lofton while Zimmer was closer to Sizemore. Lofton never hit for power, while Sizemore had all the tools until injuries happened. So we shall see if the injuries have started to take the toll on Zimmer or not. I know he mentally needed a break so let’s see if that break helps him overall.

Allen is a switch hitter who actually hits RH fairly well but struggles against LH pitchers. I almost wanna say he should just bat from one side and scrap the bat from the right side. DeShields has never hit righties well. Hence why I almost feel we will have with the current roster, Allen platooning with DeShields, Luplow with Bauers then Mercado. This will be our 5 guys for the OF. Should at least create a very good defensive crew in the end since Bauers likely won’t finish games in the OF.
