2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wonder if they would have any interest in Greg Allen as the utility OF. He belongs in the NL, but also with the DH likely coming in 2021 it could marginalize the need for the Reds to have that piece. Or trade away a bat, for that matter.

Could just as easily stash Aquino in the minors for 2020 and be the DH in 21.

Where does that put 300lb Franmil in '21?

Votto still has 4 more years too. With their current roster, the Reds could benefit from the DH more than just about any other NL team.

I’m honestly very close to the situation and probably should recuse myself from this argument to maintain toughguy internet anonymity, but there’s a reason they pulled up stakes from the city and moved to the affluent northern burbs. It’s because they weren’t drawing proportionately to their market size and also because of what amounts to Atlanta’s classic ITP/OTP cultural and racial dichotomy.

The Atlanta metro is trending in the opposite direction of Greater Cleveland. It’s not wrong to think an area with 6.2 million people (and a regional fan base) should be drawing radically more than the Indians.

That's true, but why does that really matter? Even if Atlanta isn't proportionately as good in terms of attendance because of market size, teams don't get a sicount on player salaries based on the size of the market. Ultimately, all that really matters in terms of competitiveness is the amount of revenue.

Given the size of their market, the Yankees and/or Mets should be selling out every game. Proportionately, they really don't get great support. But their total revenues are massive because of the size of their market, and that's what determines what they can spend.

Jose Siri is terrible, but the Indians should most certainly make a play for Nick Senzel, Jesse Winker or Aristides Aquino.

Wonder what the Reds would want for one of them? I'd assume Winker would be cheapest.

Upper level pitching, which is no longer a real strength of Cleveland.

Not sure I see a deal out there, but the Indians should absolutely pursue it anyway. The Reds trying to buy a glut of somewhat above average, poor defensive players in a desperate attempt to compete is going to have them give away some decent assets.

If they can pry one away through Plutko, Greg Allen and a decent prospect, I'm all for it.

I like Greg Allen, but what has he done that's earned a spot? He's a decent 4th OF-type I suppose, but really is more organizational depth than anything else.

I'm not ready to give up on Zimmer, but he's highly likely to spend at least a chunk of the year with Columbus.

Bobby Bradley looked overmatched in the bigs, but I'm OK with him continuing to work in AAA. But as an option in 2019? That pushes Reyes to every day OF, which I'm not a fan of. You need to do better than Bobby Bradley at DH for me to want Reyes in the field that much.

Jake Bauers is a big question mark. Deshields can handle the left side of a platoon I suppose, but Luplow already does that.

I'm being patient but I'll be disappointed if this is the team we see on opening day. OF options are starting to run thin now though - Puig, Lillar, Maybin, Santana...that's about it, and none of those guys are much to write home about. Maybe they can swing a trade, or maybe they just really believe in someone like Daniel Johnson. But s projected opening day outfield of Oscar Mercado, Jake Bauers, and Jordan Luplow while your payroll sits under $100 M is a tough sell with me. I'm being patient though, because I do trust this front office.
Not trying to be combative, but how are you not ready to give up on Zimmer, but ready to give up on Allen? They are virtually the same player and have a similar amount of flaws.

I don't see the two as similar at all.

Zimmer is far more physically gifted. He's also shown flashes of being a high-level contributor, Allen has not.

In 586 PA across 205 games over 3 seasons Allen has been worth -0.1 fWAR.

In his rookie year, Zimmer was worth 1.6 in 101 games and 332 PA. Health is a big issue, but minor improvements could have him as a 3 WAR player across a full season (which is exactly what Castellanos and Ozuna are).

I see similar stats & an inability to hit or stay healthy. I guess I made a broad statement, but I guess I was more so hinting at not seeing much value at face value.

Please keep in mind, I am not a big baseball guy.

Greg Allen hasn't shown anything close to the ability in CF that Zimmer has. Zimmer's ability in center is really the only reason he's seen as a better prospect right now.
