2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I see similar stats & an inability to hit or stay healthy. I guess I made a broad statement, but I guess I was more so hinting at not seeing much value at face value.

Please keep in mind, I am not a big baseball guy.
I edited my other post to add more info on why I value Zimmer more highly

The things that Allen does well, Zimmer does better. Except stay healthy.

I think most everyone would be pretty surprised if Greg Allen were to have a breakthrough 2.5 win season. Maybe it's unfair to write him off, but in my eyes I don't see him ever being more than a mediocre 4th OF.

Zimmer having a 2.5 win season would surprise people too since he hasn't been able to stay on the field, but the tools are still there that made him a Top 30 prospect.

Upper level pitching, which is no longer a real strength of Cleveland.

Not sure I see a deal out there, but the Indians should absolutely pursue it anyway. The Reds trying to buy a glut of somewhat above average, poor defensive players in a desperate attempt to compete is going to have them give away some decent assets.

If they can pry one away through Plutko, Greg Allen and a decent prospect, I'm all for it.

Obviously a decent prospect would have a great deal of appeal to the Reds, or any other team for that matter, but no team is trading for a soon-to-be 27 year-old with a career 69 WRC+ and 28 year-old with a career 5.53 xFIP. The chances of those dudes getting traded as complimentary pieces are as good as my odds of getting invited to the next Jeff Bezos housewarming party.

Not trying to be combative, but how are you not ready to give up on Zimmer, but ready to give up on Allen? They are virtually the same player and have a similar amount of flaws.

Others have already responded but I see a lot more potential in Zimmer. Before his injuries started piling up, he was a prized prospect in our system. He may never reach that potential, but his ceiling is definitely higher than Allen's.

I love Third Leg Greg as much as anyone, but Zimmer has power that Greg never will. Greg's one plus over Zimmer is speed and even that is not a big advantage, as Zimmer is deceptively fast (at least before Zimmer's injuries). Zimmer's issue is making contact to use all those tools. Greg is Alex Cole born in the wrong era. I know the club was irked he didn't do winter ball but you can't write off his skill set, not yet.

I'm not even sure if Greg has the speed over Zimmer.

Based off of Statcast's sprint speed metric- which you can take for what it is- Zimmer was clocked in at Top 10 in all of baseball in 2017 and ranked #27 in his limited time in 2018

Allen is still plenty fast, but I don't think he his the elite speed that Zimmer possesses

2019 Leaderboard

The only thing that is certain is Allen is getting playing time because Zimmer can't stay healthy.

Unless Zimmer finds his bat down in AAA, he may be done.

His speed is part of what has made Zimmer such a plus defender in the past and while Allen has been fine, he hasn't shown anywhere near the gold-glove caliber abilities that Zimmer has.

Addressing the first part, certainly true to this point. The addition of DeShields makes Allen's future murky though, regardless of what happens with Zimmer

As far as the 2nd part goes, it depends. Like the 39% K rate from 2018 certainly isn't going to play in the big leagues. Health is the biggest factor in saving his major league career. Even if he is at best a .670 - .700 or so OPS type of guy going forward, I think plenty of teams would be willing to take that rough offensive production for an elite defensive CF
