2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No. Is Haliburton going to be in the conversation as a top 5-10 PG next season? Nope. Then you don't draft him and trade a guy who plays the same position that you just drafted in the top 5 last season.

And for the record Colin Sexton is not a PG he's a SG.

Darius Garland was the 5th pick in the draft after playing a handful of college games in a rookie season that was cut short by a pandemic. There's just no excuse to trade garland for a PG unless you're getting back an All Star. You can't just tank his value like that.

What makes you think Garland will be better than a guy that defended better in college, was more efficient from every spot on the floor, averaged more assists, more rebounds, and is significantly taller with a 7 foot wingspan? I don't really understand how Garland is the better prospect. Haliburton seems to be a better passing SGA. You wouldn't trade Garland for SGA right now straight up?

I guess I would understand it if garland could do anything better than Halliburton, but what does he do better? Calling card is supposed to be shooting, but Haliburton is an uglier, but much better shooter with more range on his shot.

It would be a waste of an asset to draft Haliburton. There are more pressing needs than to replace the player we just drafted at #5 last season.

How does trading him tank his value? His value is whatever it is. Every team in the entire league saw him play in college, and in the pros, and knows that his rookie season was cut short by a pandemic. That factors in to what every team, including the Cavs, project his floor and ceiling to be moving forward. There is no reason to believe that how others value him understates or overstates his "true" value, or that we'd get anything less than that value in a trade.

Presumably, one of those needs would be met by whatever we got in return for trading Garland.

I'm not saying that we have to trade Garland. I'm just saying that I don't see anything conceptually wrong with -- if there is an appropriate deal on the table -- trading Garland and drafting a taller PG who is a better defender/pairing with Sexton.

Sexton taint a PG..............got it yet? Ignorance is not bliss. The best part comes as D starts getting more comfortable and drains a bunch of 3's. Then you will probably call him the next coming of Steph Curry. This board never changes.

That opinion has absolutely nothing to do with anything in my post, which was about acquiring a longer, better defending PG like Halliburton. If you don't consider Sexton to be a PG, then that actually strengthens the argument to pair him with Halliburton rather than a non-defending, bricklaying shrimp like "D".

Yeah they love to save money. Maybe it makes sense to get an expiring you can re-sign at a much lower number for a guy you are paying starter money for who won't be starting?

Let me ask you this. Would you trade Garland and Exum for their pick and Oubre? Then you have your wing and you can take Haliburton with 5 and pair him with Sexton? Team looks a lot better and fits better immediately. Porter is forced to find his place in this scenario though.

I like Okoro in the draft, but Oubre would be fine for me. Haliburton is the Perfect guy to maximize Sexton if that is what you want.
This is something i think the cavs would have to seriously consider if they were presented with this option.
I like your thinking,,,you immediately balance the roster with a bigger guard to play beside Sexton,,,OUbre plugs in at the 3 and you move Cedi to the bench where he belongs....then you have the bonus pick at 10 which you go bpa with.
My self I would make this deal. Makes the team better.

You guys know more than me but my sense is that we keep the guards we have for this next season and see how / if they work out. I like Sexton. As a team we aren't making much noise next year anyhow. I say we get some better wings, more height, athletic two way players.

It really depends on what you think Darius' upside is. Is he a transcendent talent or not? It is also sort of going all in on Sexton as well. Sexton starts in this scenario going forward and plays small shooting guard while Haliburton guards the tougher guy in the backcourt.

I didn't know much about this kid Haliburton until I watched the video you posted elsewhere. I like him. Looks fast and athletic, has height too. I like a guard that can dunk.

I’d throw the whole MLE at Jerami Grant

The way I look at Haliburton is he is player that adds versatility to the roster. He might not be the ideal pairing of position and skills, that would be a good ball handling SF. Haliburton might be the next best thing with getting a player that defend SGs and be the distributing PG we need.

He added another element to lineups. You now can go to a big lineup or a switch everything lineup if necessary. It's something that Garland and Sexton couldn't bring.

Garland and Sexton are overlapping talent because of their size. I just don't see Haliburton as much of overlapping talent, he could easily play next to either one of them at SG. He has shown to be good off the ball in college.

I don't think you pass up the more talented player to get a position of need with this roster. We just don't have that much long term talent that has really shown their worth yet. There will be misses and vet players will get traded or move on or age out.

LeMelo is the closest thing to an ideal fit for this team. I would look at ways to trade up for him if possible.

The first deal I try to make with PHX is Cedi/Exum for Oubre

But I also try to sneak in Cedi/Exum/MIL pick and a 2nd for Oubre and 10

Either stick and draft at 5 and 10 or move and try to package 5/10 for 2 or 3 to ensure getting Ball or Wiseman

If presented with this deal the Cavs do it yesterday.

Garland is expendable. Even if he plays well.

The Cavs are of course in the market for a proper young wing with potential who has already proven they can do a few things right.

Oubre is exactly what they should be looking for with the assets they have: A young wing that can score, has the raw tools for great defensive ability (7-2 wingspan) who still is developing, but is too expensive and isn't a fit on their team.

It would be a coup for the Cavs.

Nance has said that a lineup with himself, Love and Drummond on the court at the same time worked well at the end of the season. He says he's been working on defense. For example, angles you take on 3 point defense. The question becomes what is our biggest need considering that I believe the cavs want a player that can contribute now. PG, backup C and if Nance is plays at SF, a PF is a real need for the often hurt Love. And think the cavs would like to protect Love by limiting his minutes and have already said no back to back games for him. At the 5th pick think the most NBA ready player that fits a need is Toppin.
