2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Boobie won a playoff game as a rookie to send us to the finals for the first time. C'mon this is stupid. Nobody expects to get a starter from a 2nd. Where was Varejao drafted? Top 10?

Starters are rare from the 2nd round, but there are productive players to be had. Delly wasn't even drafted.

KPJ was "drafted" with 2nd round picks. They are lottery tickets and a way to look for roleplayers/bench guys specifically.

Lottery picks are lasers focusing on specific talent. 2nd rounders are wide nets trolling for talent. If they were worthless they wouldn't be used in trades all the time and GMs wouldn't ask for them.
Depends who you are getting those second picks from and where they fall! Getting a second pick from somebody like the Lakers, Bucks or Boston isn’t much as they would be at the bottom of the second round (unless it’s a second rounder they acquired from a lesser team)

Powell wasn't drafted by the Cavs and has a career average of 7.7 points in 18 minutes per game after six years.

Harris spent his first four years on the bench, never starting more than 14 games in a season until his fifth year. He's turned into a decent starting 2, averaging 14 ppg the last couple of years.

Daniel Gibson had a seven-year career in which he averaged 11 starts per year and 7.8 ppg. His specialty was spotting up at the 3-point line and getting passes from LeBron for open 3's. Without LeBron I'm not sure he even lasts seven years.

Danny Green was a great second round pick, becoming a regular starter halfway through his third season and having eight more seasons as a starter after that, averaging 8.9 ppg and 3.5 rebounds in 25 minutes per game. His career FG% is only 42.4%, however.

Boozer is the only Cavs' second round pick that came in and made an immediate impact and become a starter throughout his entire career, averaging 16.2 ppg. If I'm not mistaken, Boozer dropped to the top of the second round because he was fat and there were questions about his commitment to staying in shape. But he dropped the weight, got in shape, and started 54 games as a rookie. After two years the Cavs lost him to free agency when they tried to pull a salary cap shenanigan, releasing him under the mistaken impression that he would resign with them.

So in the 51-year history of the team I'm only seeing one second round pick that had any kind of impact in his first two years and only a couple that became productive starters a few years into their careers. I agree the best use of second round picks is to bundle them and move up into the first round for a high risk, high reward guy like Kevin Porter, Jr.

Reportedly the NBA is going back to allowing high school players to enter the draft next year which will mean there could be some diamonds in the rough available in the second round. Also college players that would normally go in the bottom half of the first round will be pushed into the second. Finally, the continued growth of the sport in other countries could mean there are better foreign players and more of them than there were previously so guys like Cedi who were taken with the second to last pick in Round 1 would now be available in Round 2.

So I'm willing to admit that second round picks in the future could be more valuable than they have been in the past.

Think you are forgetting Hot Rod

2nd round picks are the grease on the wheels, they don't make the car go by itself. That Lakers pick is for 2026 or 27? Right now it is just potential.

The high school players point by Catfish is a good point. We may have draft and stash high school players by the time that Lakers pick vests. You pick a promising high schooler and let him cool for a year in a gleague development program.

Cedi was a 2nd round pick and be started every game or almost every game last year. The more we think about them, the more 2nd rounders we realize we have benefitted from even if we didn't take them.

I would use most 2nd round picks on young Euros so someone else gets to train them and you don't have to put them on your roster. San Antonio thrived on that approach.

2nd Round pick Mark Price is likely the 2nd Best Cleveland Cavalier in the franchise’s history.

Hot Rod also a 2nd rounder.

Hitting those two picks allowed us to trade KJ for Nance, and build the best non-Lebron Cavs team ever.

Price was drafted by the Mavericks and we traded for him on draft day.

LeBron won the playoff game. Opponents doubled him, leaving Boobie open for uncontested threes. Boobie did a great job of knocking them down under playoff pressure, but he didn't win the game.

I agree the best use of 2nd round picks is to bundle them to move up for a talented player who fell due to off-court issues.

I agree nobody expects to get a starter with a second round pick (and it seldom happens).

But like I said, as the international game grows and there are more NBA level players overseas those second round picks will probably become more valuable. I'd have loved it if the Cavs used a second rounder on Giannis when he was 18 years old (if that were even possible) even if they had to wait 2-3 years to get him over here.

Not to be a dick, but you are all over the place.

The Giannis part makes no sense..
