2020 Starting Pitching Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Remember when Clevinger came back from injury last year?

In two starts...6.1 IP...he got rocked for 12 earned runs.

Ashes and sackcloth, gloom and doom, all around.

Over his next seventeen starts he went 12-2, with monthly ERAs of 1.74, 2.96 2.70.

He was better than Bieber. He may have been the best pitcher in the AL over those seventeen starts.

**************

I disagree that this staff can't maintain this level of production, or very close to it. Over 162 games, no way. But over what is not much more than a third of a season, it becomes more than possible.

Esp considering the fact that the competition will soon get a lot easier. Out of the next 43 games, 23 will be against KC Det, and Pit.

People keep bringing up how good Clevinger is, and I don't understand why.

Like, is there anyone here who is saying Clevinger isn't a good pitcher?

He's just had a rough start so far. He hasn't been sharp. But he's gutted each performance out.

I think every single one of us expects him to return to form as long as he remains healthy. I haven't seen anyone post anything contrary to this. Did I just miss something?

I am wary of the "competition getting easier" concept...the 60 game season is going to highlight hot and cold streaks for most all teams and players. Look at how the Tigers are playing in the moment...KC just did a number on the Twins. Plenty surprises await, but I always feel better about a team that pitches and defends well.

Looks like we can make it almost 2 weeks without needing a 5th starter.

I'm curious about what the protocols are for Clev/Plesac to return to the team. Obviously, if they test positive, shit could hit the fan for the whole organization, so let's assume they continue to test negative. What's the time table?

My understanding is that Clevinger was required to quarantine for 72 hours (not sure as to that starting point)...after that period, and if he tests negative, he can return to team.
EDIT: just read Tom Withers piece that stated players would need 2 negative tests.

"...we were practicing safe practices in a small group with people who we know have been tested and came back to our curfew late, which was 10 p.m."

He seems to be saying it was OK to go out to dinner with a small group of his buddies as long as he was back in the hotel by 10. I thought it was reported that he left the hotel without permission. So was the violation getting back late or leaving the hotel at all?

The hotel has a restaurant. They should have eaten there and hung out in the lobby.

By they way, he didn't say how late he got back. 4 a.m? And why did Plesac get seen returning by security and Clev didn't? Did they come back at different times in different cabs? I'm not sure I'm buying his story.

Clev didn't come back until the next morning from what I understand. So he never showed up on security cams at an odd time of day.

Bet that will go over big with his wife/girlfriend/sig other

I think this is when we eventually find out his real name is Roberto Hernández

I'm not certain him trying to paint himself in any kind of sympathetic light is going to fly. He just needs to say I screwed up, I'm sorry and then shut up. Less is more. No explanations matter. Team rules were broken and players' committments to each other were disregarded. Then on top of that, the risk.

He needs to quit while he's behind. Just my opinion.

Regardless of how you actually feel about the situation, I think everyone can agree that trying to justify your actions while blaming someone else is a complete whiff on Plesac’s part.

Take your lumps and move on. There are zero scenarios where his comments improve his situation.

yep - the more you talk, the less i believe (found out early on that the more details I gave to parents - or girl friends - the less it was believable)

...Wtf is he in his car recording an Instatweet if he is supposed to be quarantined? How is it safe to do this and drive? Sunshine Jr is pulling out a shovel now.

Having watched the video of Plesac himself I'm still confused. He clearly said "we weren't supposed to leave" the hotel, but he also said there was a 10 p.m. curfew. How can there be a curfew if you're not allowed to leave the building?

He admitted they "broke" the curfew but doesn't say what time he got back.

Clearly Plesac feels he and Clevinger didn't do anything to endanger anyone and there's a lot of anger at the media, which he described as "malicious". He added, "It breaks my heart for people to think I'm a bad teammate and a bad person". He claims he found some research that says there's no problem as long as the group is ten people or less and they maintain a distance of six feet. That sounds ridiculous. What if 9 of the 10 people are infected? He apparently spent hours with this group of friends at two different locations.

Bottom line is he admitted knowing he was not allowed to leave the hotel and did anyway. He claims he was careful not to put himself in a situation where he could be exposed and is furious about being slammed in the media as being a "bad person".

This is kind of like a person who comes out of a party knowing he's had too many drinks and is not legal to drive. He decides to drive home anyway and gets pulled over right in front of his house. His argument is that he was aware he was drunk and drove slowly and stayed away from other traffic, making it home safely, so why should he be arrested? He thinks he should just get a ticket.

Obviously when Tito said the players were at different stages of awareness regarding the seriousness of their actions he was referring to Plesac as the guy who was trying to minimize the situation.

We should just trade them both. Maybe we can get a bat, finally.
