From a Kelsey Russo column in The Athletic:

“I talk to Ed Davis a lot on this team, and he always comments that, man, this team is different,” [Jarrett] Allen said. “This team is different in how we connect on and off the court. It’s different how we buy into the system. It’s just different about how we go about our business.”

We are so lucky to have a team like this to enjoy. I give JBB a ton of credit as well as Altman for bringing in guys who are willing to be part of something bigger than themselves and play any role that's asked.

Kevin Love is also buying in and seems to be enjoying himself and the success this team is having.

Suffice to say, this year isn't last year.

Last season:
50 losses.
Average of 16.8 points margin of defeat in those losses
17 games where the Cavs were beat by 20+ points
12 games where the losses were within single digits (24 percent of all losses)

Last season, first 10 losses:
Average of 13.2 points margin of defeat in those losses
2 games where the Cavs were beat by 20+ points (another game with a 19 point loss)
3 games where the losses were within single digits (30 percent of the 10 losses)

This season so far:
10 losses.
Average of 8.7 points margin of defeat in those losses
0 games where the Cavs were beat by 20+ points (largest margin thus far, 15 points vs Golden State)
5 games where the losses were within single digits (50 percent of all losses)

Where do the Cavs rank in the Eastern conference once we get Osman and Wade back? We still aren't getting the credit we deserve for how well we have played, but is starting to come, and if we can go toe to toe with Utah, Milwaukee, and Chicago, winning just even one of our next three games, then the rest of the NBA will catch on to what we've known here for several weeks now -- this club is legitimate.

Realistically, I think Brooklyn and Milwaukee are a cut above the rest of the teams in the East. Right now, based on how teams have played THIS YEAR, injuries, and strength of schedule, I think the Cavaliers deserve consideration for that next tier that includes Chicago and Miami. Four of those five teams are going to host first-round playoff games. The next group includes Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, and Charlotte. I think those are going to be the ten playoff teams. That is how good the East is right now -- teams are going to need to finish above .500 to get into a play-in game.

Having said, that, we are very vulnerable in the backcourt right now, as we can't afford an injury to either Garland or Rubio. We could use a 26 year-old version of Matthew Dellavedova right now to provide support for those two. Someone who could handle not playing but who could come in and give us 20 minutes when necessary. I don't think we need any more stars. We have all the (future) stars we need right now in Allen, Mobley, and Garland, who will continue to get better. We only need acquire role players at this point, as they are less likely to destroy team chemistry. Markannen, Love, Rubio, Osman, and Okoro (and even Wade, and Stevens, and sometimes Windler) are all thriving as role players with occasional big games. We'll see about Sexton. He has the talent to be star on any given night, and the team needs what he offers us, as long as he doesn't demand to do too much.

Agree with all this.

As for the Cavs being in the second tier of East teams behind Brooklyn and Milwaukee, over the last two weeks the Cavs have a +10.8 point differential, good for 5th in the NBA behind Milwaukee, Golden State, Utah, and Atlanta. Brooklyn is 7th.

According to cleaningtheglass.com the Cavs are 2nd in defending shots at the rim and 3rd at defending 3's. They're 22nd at defending mid-range shots, but as long as they're in the top three in defending the rim and the 3-point line they will do very well defensively.

With as good as our defense is and the deadly pick & roll, between Garland & Allen, I think we can compete with & beat any team in the East. We recently beat Miami & Washington handily. We were short-handed when we faced the Nets or we could have beaten them too.

I hear you. We are just very inexperienced and we lack the dynamic proven star power (Durant, Harden, Booker, James, Antetokounmpo, etc.) of those top few teams that is so essential when something important is really on the line. Also, while this big lineup is giving all teams fits right now, eventually teams will come up with a way to deal with it. (Of course not all teams will be successful, because we create matchup problems that most teams do not have bodies equipped to handle.)

It is a big jump to go from 20 wins to being in the conversation for having home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. But here we are.

I love the enthusiasm and I know our play has been great of late, but I would caution the optimism a bit. Our group of guys is young and we have a really small sample of them playing this well. Atl is basically at the same point where they had that really hot run to end the year but have been pretty meh otherwise the last 2 years. I think the Cavs are probably somewhere around the 10-12 mark overall in the league right now and probably 6-8 in the East. Mil, Bkn are clearly better. I think Chi, Phi and Mia (when healthy) are for sure a tier above. So we are in the next group with Wash, NYK and Cha. Probably better than all 3 although Cha does scare me a bit. Either way, the Cavs are playing way above my expectations for this year since I had them as the 12th best team in the east not the 6-8th. Loving this season so far and looking forward to see how things keep going.

Oh, and I think we might be better than the Lakers right now, so thats fun

Perkins has been talking about the Cavs for awhile and believed our youth. It is really coming along and these guys haven’t played a half a season together yet.
We’re going to be dangerous. Yes very dangerous.

I'm interested to see how we play against Gobert. The alley oop is likely off the table. As is Allen's flat hook. Love & Mobley are really going to need to stretch the floor.
I’m very interested too. There was so much talk during the offseason about not giving much money to a big man but I’m very curious to see how Allen plays against Gobert. I feel like we are a bad matchup when it comes to Jazz or the Bucks but am excited to watch tomorrow.

Allen’s best game for Brooklyn came against Gobert, think he had a 20-20 game

The Sporting News just released an article giving tiers for the East. They have the Cavs in the 4th tier, not even in the top ten!

Cavs being in tier 4 is totally fine for now… I’m enjoying the ride but I still wanna see more…

Gotta crawl before you can walk….
