2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They may just ram this one through. Things could get pretty wild.

It takes between 7 dozen and 10 dozen balls to get thru a MLB game.

The average life expectancy of a ball is two pitches.
But those balls spend time sitting in a satchel that hangs from umpires waist. Come October, those balls will get cold, and we just don't know how they will perform once cold, if they will still be sticky or not be up to the task.

How good (and smart) is Juan Soto at hitting? Vlad Jr. is getting all the attention but they're the same age and Soto has already been raking for a few years.

Guy's got a Barry Bonds-like .475 OBP over the last 2 years and does so using an approach which he kind of invented.

Mind bending.

The best hitter of this generation.

High praise indeed. Not disagreeing with you, but Mike Trout has been pretty stellar as well.

Edit. Do you consider them as the same generation?

I do, and Trout is the better all around player.

Soto is just a hitting savant. Once in a generation talent with his eye at the plate and his approach.

I feel like the best comparison would be Joey Votto but he's already better than Votto ever was, and Votto is likely going to be a Hall of Famer for hitting alone.

They have a similar patient approach with the 2-strike choke-up mode to avoid K's. Soto striking out at the rate he does is pretty unreal with how often he gets deep into counts, with today's pitchers who average mid-90s.

Hitting savant is the perfect description of Soto.

He is a left handed Manny Ramirez.

The overall numbers are eerily similar.

Soto first...

BB rate...18.5/13.6
K rate......17.5/18.5
ISO.....253/273
BA....304/312
OBO...433/411
SLG...557/585
OPS...990/996
wRC+....158/153

yep - have said the same - left handed manny

Brandon Belt thumb injury could be a huge blow to the NL West leaders...

Is Joey Votto having one of the best age 38 seasons ever? Or is the fact that he foul popped out to the right side negate it?

Midseason acquisitions can serve all sorts of needs: bullpen depth, a platoon advantage, middle-of-the-order pop. But when L.A. sent off top pitching prospect Josiah Gray for a chunk of the Nats’ 2019 World Series-winning core, it didn’t really need anything. At the time, the Dodgers sat three games behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West, but Pythagorean win-loss had them as baseball’s best club. They had a Cy Young favorite in Walker Buehler and a potential MVP in Max Muncy, with past winners in both categories (Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts) 1 working their way back from injury. Even without would-be starter Trevor Bauer, who was placed on administrative leave by MLB following sexual assault allegations, the Dodgers had at one point allowed the fewest runs in baseball and scored the fifth-most. Most deadline deals fortify a contending team’s weakness; this one meant to add to the Dodgers’ strength, nudging their status from “great” to “prohibitively so.” It’s about the biggest ask a team can make of fresh hires: championship or bust. It’s also one Scherzer and Turner are uniquely capable of pulling off.
