2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let me get this straight: for an aging player, you would rather have bet on his 2019, which was thirty points ABOVE his lifetime BABIP than give credence to 2018 and 2019 which were twenty-five and forty points BELOW his career BABIP, respectively.

There's a wide difference between being "done as a run producer" and a willingness to overpay for whatever run-producing can be reasonably expected at his age. I get it, you love the guy, we all did. But immediate results don't triumph the wisdom of the decision.
Sure didn't love him when he first started playing 1st base - what a disaster he was for the pitchers.

But hats off to Carlos - made him self into a very good defensive player also. It will be a very respectable career for him when he decides to hang them up.

Where did I ever say I thought he’d maintain his 2019 numbers?

I just know Santana is a good hitter, and I always thought they should have accepted his option.

However, as I said, if the declining of the option was about monetary losses from the pandemic, I can at least understand that.

White Sox seem like the most credible competition so far his season. Minnesota can get hot and Kansas City can stay hot but if we're going to make the playoffs we might need a little bit of luck and this is the kind of luck.

Damn, he’s on my fantasy team

Part of me doesn't want to win because the other team loses main players though... I never honestly like to see it even if it is in our favor.

Not saying Frankie got him fired but one certainly wonders if they’d be canning their hitting coach this early in the season if their new 300M FA investment wasn’t hitting .163

Guarantee this was Cohen’s call.

I would not be surprised if Cohen did make the call.

On a different aspect: it is relatively early to toss multiple members from the coaching staff. Notice the wording is fired, not reassigned within the organization. Makes me wonder if something else beyond poor team hitting performance was part of the reason behind the decision to make a change..

Resisting analytic items/ scouting reports from the FO??
Other arguments behind close doors??
Inability to create good working relationships??

The now departed hitting coaches were part of the old regime.

If somebody needs scapegoats, it always looks better if they are somebody that you didn't hire.

Not selective memory. He was still an above average offensive player in 2018 despite his BABIP being 30 points below his career average.

As I said, if it’s a pandemic losses thing, I can live with that. But, if they let him go because they thought Santana was done being a run producer, then I think that’s gross ineptitude.
I have a hard time believing that this would be a conversation piece if we had any production from 1B at all. That doesn't mean they should have overpaid for Los' services. I think not addressing the issue is a legitimate argument, but not picking up Los' option has no grounds whatsoever.

Of course the pandemic influenced financial decisions, but again I doubt that had anything to do with declining the option. At that point Los wasn't worth it and it wasn't even close.

I simply don't agree, and it's not some hindsight thing. I argued for his option to be picked up all of last year.

You don't have to agree, but the numbers support it Derek. I respect your opinion, but it is not structured with facts. Especially when you consider the payroll pinch they were in. All you have to do is look at the Carrasco trade and Cookie was going to be paid millions less than Los.

And I've said many times that if it was simply a cost-cutting thing, I accept that, but if it was a talent evaluation thing, I believe it was a huge whiff.

All the peripherals pointed to his dip in production last year simply being a result of a small sample size.
