2021 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Texas offered him a bag. Same with Ewers. They can’t develop talent and win so they just resort to their oil salesmen boosters to buy it for them. NIL sucks. At the very least needs reformed before it ruins college football.
Yep. Many predicted this but some didn’t want to listen. It’s the wild fucking west with NIL. Texas is now targeting Abor who is crystal balled to OSU, as well. This is your new reality, enjoy.

I assume it’ll be reined in after a few years of utter chaos, we’ll see.

It's worth it so these kids get some money out of the value they provide to these programs, in my opinion.

A lot of the top recruits have been concentrated in a few Blue Blood (and adjacent) programs for years prior to NIL. The recruiting game is constantly shifting and I don't feel like this is much different (in principle) than the big dogs showing off their fancy new facilities, etc. to reel them in. Hell, coaching is probably the biggest factor in recruiting and I haven't seen a serious discussion about how to reign in coaching salaries.

I'd be interested in hearing ideas about regulation though.

Sure, they should get money, but what’s the point if it ruins the sport? Recruits flipping on signing day because they got offered a bigger bag is just too far, for me. Blah blah, I know someone is just going to tell me they’ve been getting paid for years behind the scenes. :chuckle: Anyway, I understand that all some people care about is players getting money but I’ll be the selfish guy in the room that still wants some semblance of college football to remain and not just be another pro league.

Just needs regulation, in all honesty, but everybody had to jump into the thing with their hair on fire and that’s why it’ll be chaos for a while. Hopefully it’ll settle down after a few years. I’ll leave specific ideas on how to regulate it while ensuring the players still get paid their value to people smarter than me.

I don't think its ruining the sport. Top programs have always had all the advantages. (Brand, Facilities, Coaches, Money on the low)
NIL changes nothing for Ohio St. We have boosters with deep pockets who will do the same thing as Texas.
Its the small schools that are getting screwed here. (as they always have)

So far Ohio State boosters have done nothing like what Texas is doing.

Time will provide clarity, and I’m sure they will if it becomes clear OSU is operating at a disadvantage. Oh well. I guess I don’t think of cash bags as the same as top facilities, maybe I’m old fashioned. Carry on.

This is the NCAA's fault for spending years preaching bullshit about the spirit of amateur athletics instead of building a system where this isn't chaos. Money is a problem in the sport, but it seems weird to draw the line at player's getting their bag when coaches get to, admin gets to, sponsors get to, networks get to...

There is a lot about the sport that has shifted towards a more traditional pro league (larger conferences, diminished bowl prestige, playoff, etc.) which I get being frustrated with for sure.

We also didn't get NIL legislation as quickly as the South but we got on it eventually. Columbus is a big market with no pro football team. Long term I don't think Ohio State is among the schools that will be hurt by NIL.

It’ll all even our and we’ll all get used to it. Like you said OSU isn’t a school in danger of being left in the dust…. But my frustration isn’t strictly about that, either.

Gonna be an interesting few years.

People dump on the NCAA a lot, I tend to push back against it, at least somewhat.

But I couldn’t agree more with what you said (well, I am in education, so I do believe in the spirit of amateur athletics, regardless if it’s been dead in NCAA football for a while). People have been talking about players making money for DECADES. NCAA could’ve set something up years ago, but never did.

To be fair, there's far more desperation at UT.

If OSU has a season in 2022, similar to 2021, I'd imagine you are gonna start seeing piles of cash lit on fire.

Probably right about that. OSU boosters don’t fuck around either and the program has sat on a puffy cloud for a long time now even despite a couple dumb ass scandals.

Do players have to disclose the endorsement deals and money?
