2021 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
At some point though the "we have massive amounts of money and a huge brand" just starts to wear off if you aren't winning.

Because, as we've seen with a ton of other former big time programs, the recruits stop coming.

Nebraska, Miami, Texas....USC isn't far from being those programs.

Oklahoma and Texas will get more money by going to the SEC, but will hurt their long-term chances at getting to the CFP.

Smart long play by Riley

What the flying fuck. Did he not want to go to the SEC???

I feel kind of bad for Oklahoma, if they can’t get a name coach.

They signed on to go to the SEC and now are just randomly in coaching peril.

For a program that has been so consistently good, kind of a scary no man’s land to be in, when your head is now on the SEC chopping block.

As opposed to going to USC? I don't even know the last time a pac 10 school went to the playoffs and SEC basically has it built in they get 2 teams

He doesnt need to worry about what the rest of the PAC is doing. Build a strong team that runs the conference and his USC team will be a playoff contender.

Just look at Clemson.

Yep, the PAC is down really bad right now too. Oregon and Utah are solid programs, but Cal, Washington, UCLA, Wash. State are all down right now.

A 1-loss PAC-12 champion gets in a fair amount of the time I'd wager, and I think Riley can put that together relatively quickly at USC.

UCLA is slowly gaining steam with Chip Kelly.

A guy I always bring up as surprising that he hasn't been lured away is Kyle Whittingham.

I have to assume major players have tried and tried to get him out of Utah and he just must love it there.

Truly underrated coach.

Also I think this is the first time Pat Fitzgerald might think about leaving for one of these big time jobs s if they come calling.

That was awfully fast. Are there no tampering rules in CFB?

Here's a scenario:

Georgia wins. Michigan wins. Everyone else loses.

Who gets in?

Woo man. I suspect there would be a great, great, great many leapfrogs.

You can't possibly ut Notre Dame in ahead of Cincinnati, right?

And it would be hard to put Cincy in if they don't win the AAC, I'd think.

So then you're just gonna have to see teams like Baylor and Iowa make major, major, major poll jumps.

If Oregon beats Utah in the rematch, they probably get in. If Utah wins, then it's either Iowa and Baylor make a massive jump, or you put Cincy AND ND in.

If Alabama keeps it really close, they get in. If they get blown out, then it's one of the above scenarios.

Notre Dame can't lose so they're in. Then it'd be Cincinnati or the strongest 2-loss team:
  • Bama would get it unless Georgia blanks & blows them out
  • OK State probably misses out with another loss
  • Ohio State is incredibly unlikely
  • Ole Miss would get some consideration cuz SEC
  • Baylor would be a legit threat with a conference title & wins over both Oklahoma schools
My guess would be ND at #4 and Bama at #3 because Bama looks "competitive" against Georgia and they don't want to rematch right away. Although I'm not a fan of either school, I bet ESPN and the respective fans are drooling at a potential Michigan-Notre Dame playoff game though.

Looking at it I feel good that Baylor just gets in no matter what happens, outside of Alabama beating Georgia.

They'll have wins over OK state, Oklahoma, AND BYU, which is currently 13th and might be higher when the rankings come out tomorrow.

At this point I think NOtre Dame is basically blocked out unless crazy shit happens that does NOT involve Cincy losing.

I see no way you can put them in over a 1 loss Cincy team who beat them, at home, by double digits.

EDIT: And fwiw I suspect Alabama loses by at least 2 touchdowns. Anything other than a down to the wire loss and they're out.

Georgia Michigan Alabama and I would hope Cincy, but maybe Baylor or Oregon or ND.
