2021 Draft Lottery

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Has there ever been a successful rebuild where the team exclusively picked players 6'5" or under in the lotto?
Yes look at the Jazz. We can build the Cavs after the Jazz and Green can be our Donovan Mitchell and Garland can he our Mike Conley. We also have Allen as our Golbert. Sexton can be our sixth man. We just need to invest in a big SF who can 3 and D. Mobley and Allen would just clog up the lane.

Not the thread for this, but I don't see it with Green. High usage guards who cant defend or create for others are a trap (see Lavine, Zach). I've said it elsewhere but if we are picking 6 and hes BPA, I trade down to grab Sengun, Wagner, or even Moody.

As a more topical post, I think I have about ~10 guys I feel good about in this draft so even worst case scenario, we fall to 9, we get a guy I will be happy with. Ill make a more detailed pre-lottery post sometime soon in the 2021 NBA draft thread about my take, based entirely on heresay and reading Nathan S/ImWithDan's excellent discussions, but I view the draft as having a clear top player (Mobley), a few high level wings (Cade, Barnes, Kuminga), two guards I trade down (Green, Suggs), and a number of solid fallback wings/bigs (Sengun and down). Hopefully we can just grab Mobley at 1 and call it a day, but if we have to take Garuba at 8 then I am okay with that too.

I see baby Kobe. Levine can only dream that he had that killer instinct as a scorer like Green. Green will end up the best player in this dream. The other guys played College players while Green played against Pros.

We are not good enough to be picking out the top 5. If we get 6-9 then we will be mad. We still have glaring holes that then draft needs to fix

You are overrating him there somewhat imo. I think he has a clear path to being a 6th man.
He is not 6'6 more likely 6'4" or less. He has limited length like 1 inch more than Sexton. He is a isolation specialist, that wants to be the 1st option on ball scorer. Maybe he will be, but not without massive improvements as a team player. He has irrational confidence, and not much chance he fits the Cavs idea of culture building lol. I bet they pass on him unless they are at 6 or 7 and even there they might value trading down.
Green could be the best isolation scorer in this draft, but that is all.
Personally think his hype is stronger than his game at this point.

He would be playing as the scoring 2 guard so elite ISO skills would be beneficial. I see him as a mix of Kobe and Donovan Mitchell without the Kobe size yet and more athletic than both Kobe and Mitchell. His first step is absolutely insane and he has advance offensive arsenals with deep step back 3s, elite fast break and cutting skills so he can play off ball and use his gravity to open up the floor for others. He also has elite under the basket skills and can finish with either hand and these skills were against Pros. He can also pass and set up teammates.

I don't see confidence as a weakness in competitive sports. If Koby just want the same type of personality and would pass on a guy like Green, he's really shouldn't be the GM any longer. Dude just want robots on the team.

I just don't see any limitations in his offensive game. There is no way this kid won't be a star unless he gets injured.

Just to give a reality check - Kobe weighed 192 as a 17 year old. He was built to carry an offense, but really couldn't do it in the NBA until he matured further.

Green really needs to develop in the weight room before he is anything more than an interesting young iso weapon with other guys leading a team.

I've really become concerned that weight training is falling by the wayside with so many blue chip guard prospects the past few years.

When the actual spots are revealed there’s a bit of a complication on what we want to see.

If the Cavs are in the top four then at commercial break we’d want to see the 12th, 13th and 14th teams because our chances that we were drawn #1 are better than if, say, 1st 2nd and 3rd are drawn.

But, while the drawing is happening we want to see nobody behind us move up, for two reasons:

- Less chance we’re in the top four
- If we’re not top four then each time a team is skipped we lose a position.

So we start provisionally at 5. Every time a team is skipped we fall back one spot, provisionally. We obviously want to be skipped; if we’re not, our draft position is 5 plus the number of team that were skipped behind us.

The reason drafting 5th is only 2% is that can happen only if the top four teams are one of the four teams drawn in the lottery. With the lower # of balls at the top than in Hinkie time that’s not likely.

9th is also unlikely because four teams 6-14 would be drawn.

Mad at four drawings of four ping pong balls out of fourteen LOL.

This is a draft where I would love to have another pick. I think theres a lot of interesting guys in the lower lottery that could be good pickups. Then again, I said this last year and we saw how that went...

Can I just say that this year's draft lottery really highlights what TOTAL BULLSHIT Sexland was as a strategy for the team's future? If we get a high pick we will likely select a guard because we desparately need size and defense and PG intangibles in the backcourt, despite having two lottery picks already there, and we will be basically forced to trade one of Sexton or Garland without getting any kind of equivalent value.

Sigh. What’s done is done. Sexland is not a bust by any stretch. Sexton was a 8th pick. And is rising to all star status little by little. Garland showed massive strides last year. They will not draft a guard this year

It's not a bust at the individual player level but it's looking like it might be a bust at the team building level, you will notice that the steps both players took this year didn't really show up in the won-lost record. As for who we draft this year, a lot of the top talents are guards, I've seen assessments that six of the top seven talents are guards.
