2021 Game #1 | #4 Ohio State @ Minnesota | September 2nd, 2021 @ 8:00 PM EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No, you said this:
And I don’t think Stroud had to do too much to accomplish any of that. I think you’re giving him to much credit for the way people around him played. He was able to hit guys who were extremely wide open and was given a ton of time to throw. He had a couple really bad throws and I don’t know if he had one throw that was really tough.

Again, if we’re putting the “bad” label on Stroud after walking into that environment and going for 235 and 4 in the second half, you’re trying WAY too hard.

Which is the same argument I posted before. He missed easy throws, and didn’t have any good throws. I don’t know why posting basically what I said was my argument refutes my argument in any way.

Players can play bad and still have good numbers because of the people around them.

I guess everyone expected Stroud to just be Justin Fields 2.0 and ignore all the other details that at this point is just beating a dead horse (freshman stating his first game, hasnt throw a game pass since HS two years ago, road game in front of a rowdy sellout crowd, primetime with the entire country watching, good opponent, rainy conditions). How dare this 19 year old be human and miss a couple open receivers and throw an INT. What a bum. Season over.

I thought his throw on the run to Olave to seal the game was solid. I thought the screen pass to Henderson was perfectly placed.. an inch or two shorter and it's batted at the line. I thought his pass to Wilson for the TD was dropped in perfectly. He had some solid completions with defenders coming at him. He didn't have a good first half, no one is disputing that. He settled in the second half for sure. Too many overreactions from spoiled fans who expect perfection from 19 year old kids playing for the first time in 2 years and refuse to look at any outside factors.

Easy thing to say from the couch, I guess.

'No good throws' is quite a take.

This guy seems to have a different take.

“He and I had a conversation early on that we’re gonna keep swinging. No matter what happens. And we’re not gonna play it close to the vest. That’s not the way we do it. And he responded,” Day said. “But I think really, it was the guys around him. I think when you look at the defensive score that we got, that was huge. But then the guys up front. Chris (Olave), Garrett (Wilson), those were big plays. And then obviously the play with Trey (Henderson) on that third down was big.”

TD1 to Olave is a very good throw

TD2 to Olave is good as well. Sure he's wide open and puts in 40 YAC but he did well to put that ball right on Olave while on the run with a defender in his face

He'll be fine. He has an incredibly, incredibly talented offense around him. The defense is the concern. Yes, the Buckeyes were missing both starting CBs but worth noting Minnesota was missing their #1 WR. Obviously Harrison made that huge strip sack but seemed like they struggled to get a significant pass rush for most of the game.

Can you just refute my argument without calling me spoiled? I have a thread in this forum where I talk about the Cooper era a lot. I don’t get what attacking me that way accomplishes.

But I do think your points about the throws might show where our disagreements stem from. The throws you mentioned we’re certainly not bad throws. But Stroud is a 5 star, beat out 2 other Uber recruits, and is starting for the #4 team in the country. He should be expected to make those throws at minimum. They aren’t that difficult for a really good QB.

And before we start the “he’s 19 in a hostile environment” argument, 3 of the last 4 national champions were won by first year starters, 2 of them true froshes who were inserted over entrenched starters. OSU in 14 and Bama in 15 had first year starters at QB.

Young QBs are doing things that were seemingly unrealistic not too long ago. But if OSU really wants to stay in the Bama/Clemson tier, they need to hold QBs to an unreasonably high standard.

Ive said it’s one game and have no idea how good Stroud really is. But I don’t think saying he needs to be a lot better than he was last night is really that wacky a thing to say.

“I really think it was the guys around him”

Basically what I said.

:chuckle: “He made no good throws” is not what he said.

Guess I should get used to it.

Every great performance will be credited to the guys around him, every bad throw is on him.

Suppose we haven’t seen anything yet, it’s all downhill from here if this is the expectation moving forward.

Nowhere in his quote did he say he made good throws either. But he did give most of the credit to the supporting cast.

Also, Straw man and reducto ad absurdum in one post.

We’re done here, until you passively aggressive gravedig a quote of mine and use it out of context in a few weeks.

Finally got to watch the game, definitely a rougher start than the expectation for Ohio State, but I always appreciate a win and those expectations are high because of where we want the season to end.

First, Minnesota:
  • Morgan came through with that veteran presence to get them in the game, but predictably the game eventually went sideways.
  • The loss of Ibrahim is monumental. He played so well prior to injury and what could've been a monster season is done. Not that it really matters, but this will de-value this win on our resume a bit as Minnesota will probably fare much worse without him going forward. As a result, I expect it'll be a long sad season for the Gophers when they had a shot at contending for the West.
Our offense:
  • Not worried about Stroud. A rainy road game at night to start his career and he recovered from a bumpy start to win with some breathing room. Obviously the other offensive talents helped, which is exactly what we're looking for while breaking in a 19-year-old QB. I suspect from growing pains to continue next week but I have faith in him and the cast around him.
  • Running back room is surprisingly deep. Teague is about what we expect, Williams looks like a leading back right now, and Henderson got to have a hype-assed play too. Excited to see them continue to develop.
  • Chris Olave is so so good.

Our defense:
  • Obviously not what we wanted to see. The strip sack TD was great, and it's only 1 game, but this is reminiscent of years past with less than stellar D.
  • Injuries are a problem, so I don't want to judge too harshly at this juncture, but we'll need to score a lot this season to take care of this schedule.
  • Multiple targeting reviews that went our way. Maybe this is an overreaction, but I feel like at least one of those might've gotten called in years past. Perhaps there is some amount of shift away from calling it so often. But I would still agree with the notion that the rule should be adjusted. I think making it akin to the NBA's flagrant rules makes sense. Incidental contact seems light for an ejection, but shouldn't we be protecting players from helmet/neck area hits regardless? Make it a 1 & 2.
    • 1- Incidental. First is a penalty, second is ejection.
    • 2- Crown of the helmet/clear violation, auto ejection. [Or something like that, the all or nothing approach is problematic at best.]
As others have stated, Oregon will be interesting. The good news is the first game jitters are gone and we'll be at home with what's sure to be an electric crowd.

Klatt kinda said something like this about the second targeting. He knew it looked like targeting, but both he and Pereira said they didn’t think the player should be ejected. So the flagrant foul type rule would make sense.

People need to chill.
