Eh... I dont think this really will effect his speed or anything
This is true, but rehabbing instead of working on his defense this offseason, won't make him better.

Of course, playing third much of the time won't make him better in the outfield, either.

I dont think Jones is in the MLB plans for at least the first half of next season, anyway...so this delay probably won't hurt...and neither did his playing third so much.

There's another thing to consider. Although he is a big kid, he was originally a SS when he was drafted. He isn't exactly a lumbering clod in the field. A half season in the OF should be long enough to prepare him...if he can hit.

Any idea if Espino might get brought up to Akron if the Ducks make the playoffs? Maybe just for the experience of the playoff atmosphere?

I definitely wouldn't be against it, but who is available for them to put on the AA roster? I mean the AAA team is out of the playoffs, so putting a guy like a Cody Morris wouldn't be a bad idea in a sense...

It’s too bad the FO has soured on him :chuckle:
That was never said.

What was said was that the way he and Jones were being handled indicated that neither were in the MLB plans for the first half of 2022 and that by the second half both Rocchio and Freeman will be in Columbus.

Unless the org rates Arias as better than Rocchio and Freeman, the math ain't that hard.

An org does not have to sour on a player to rate his competition more highly. But it does have to make a decision, because a team can't play three guys around second base...and third base is spoken for.

But if you value Arias more than Rocchio and Freeman, that's okay.

My guess is that when other GMs come calling, they ask about Rocchio, Freeman, and Arias...in that order.

I agreed with your post. It was well-articulated and supported by demonstrable, concrete steps the org has taken this year.

I'm a big fan of each of Arias, Rocchio, and Freeman. IDK who I'd rate 1st, 2nd, or 3rd among them. Nice problem to have, sure. But simply makes the requested and received return for Lindor all the more perplexing. I don't even think you listed that trade, but it certainly jives with the overall point you made about the steps they've taken while Arias has already been in the org.

Would love to hear the people who mock you cobble together a realistic proposal for what the next year or two looks like for Arias, Freeman, Rocchio, Gimenez, and Rosario since it's apparently a laughable suggestion that Arias gets moved. The only two alternatives I see are that either Columbus is going to have a SS/2B duo that includes 2 of them until about 2025 or we start moving 2 of them to some position none have played.

Arias could get moved in like a move for a Marte or Reynolds, but otherwise he ain't going anywhere...

@CATS44 if saying that a guy has been passed over, and that the FO has no plans for them doesn’t mean that you’re saying the organization has soured on him then we’re using different dictionaries, and I apologize for the confusion.

I believe your logic is misguided. Calling up Jones or Arias this year would not have made any sense. In addition to Arias being one of the youngest players in AAA, he also had zero experience above A+ prior to this season (Jones had less than 50 games). Not to mention service time.

I’ve seen you point to their positions played this season as evidence of your opinion, with Jones playing a lot of 3B (in addition to playing a good chunk of games in RF), and Arias playing a lot of SS (in addition to getting a good chunk at 3B/2B). To put it simply, I don’t think that means anything beside that they were permitted to play their best position while weaning them into learning new positions as well.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the team did trade away/consolidate some of their positions of depth this off-season, but I don’t believe that anymore likely to trade Arias than they are Rocchio, or anyone else. You seem to believe that the organization has to choose between these guys, and I don’t believe that to be the case. The margins between these prospects is very thin. There’s no reason to go out of our way to deal one of them until someone actually proves they can consistently produce at the major league level.

Arias and Jones will likely have their opportunities to seize every day jobs in Cleveland next season. For all of our sakes, let’s hope they show up and show out.

@Derek and you have indicated.. there is a heirarchy of talent.. and a different order of readiness.. If you were to rate the Indians prospects in order of readiness/talent combined.. you might conclude:

1B 1st: Bobby Bradley 2nd: Johnkensey Noel 3rd Nolan Jones Else: Owen Miller
2B 1st: Tyler Freeman 2nd: Brayan Rocchio 3rd: Ernie Clement Else: Richie Palacios, Aaron Bracho
SS 1st: Gabriel Arias 2nd: Angel Martinez 3rd: Jose Tena Else: Carson Tucker, Tyler Freeman
3B 1st: Nolan Jones 2nd: Gabriel Arias 3rd: Gabriel Rodriquez Else: Milan Tolentino

Anyone and everyone not in the first or second slot(s).. can be and should be trade bait?..

Thoughts?
