2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Think they will resign him or will he lean towards a new spot with a better MLB chance?
You don't elect for FA if you just end up staying here. He's going to an org he can get to the bigleagues in. The Gs are just too loaded in the OF for someone like him.

Some guys resign... Gose and Monasterio did last off season even though they were free agents...

Oscar elected for minor league free agency.
This is not a surprise.

It will be interesting to see who he signs with and if he makes a 40 man.

The Guardians at the moment have one of the worst OF situations in baseball, but see themselves as contenders and plan on addressing the outfield problem externally. Obviously, they didn't see Gonzalez as an answer and/or didn't have the time frame available to find out.

Wish Oscar the best. He might be in limbo for a minute, but he'll get a semi-decent shot to earn a ML job somewhere. Easy to overlook he comes with all 3 options.. Could end up in the KBO/NPB even.

The guys who sign..get a vibe.. a belief that where they're at is the best for them at that time.. It doesn't have to stay that way.. but it can... Gose stayed because he was given the chance to hone his craft within the structure of the Indians but with the ability to get input from more than a single voice.. Good for Gose.. good for the Guards..

I'm not sure why Monasterio did what he did..

Well Monasterio got a legit chance to move up and honestly didn't do bad at all since he is likely to get a spring camp with some MLB team...

He had his best year as a pro by far in 2021, probably the most unsung of all our MIF guys. Pretty much had an OPS of 800 all year across 2 levels - 287/371/441/812 turns 25 in May. Someone will sign him to a minor league contract, maybe gets an invite, wouldn't surprise me.

The reason for the comment about Monnasterio.. he's got twelve guys in front of him.. all better.. he's got a near zero chance of advancing in this organization.. I still don't know...

Bravo to Coach and Criznit!

Monasterio was signed by the Brewers with a ST invite.

Monasterio also could be taken in the Rule 5 as well, so he's gonna get a chance to impress this spring...

He never had a single season above .720 OPS in the minors until 21... His best position is 2B (he's as good as anyone there) and can play SS and 3B... his SO rate went south, but his gap power and overall power went up... Let's see how he does!

Alright, Tobias Myers. I've been able to see him a handful of times over the last 3 years. Here is what I got.

Not a big kid, but very smooth and athletic on the mound and you can tell he was a 2 way player growing up (he could have been drafted as a 3B/OF too), similar to how Plesac operates on/around the mound.

Right away, think his arm action will get cleaned up in Cleveland. Little long and loopy for how short and compact the rest of his mechanics are. Think he'll be able to make that arm action more compact and keep his high release point that helps with his effectiveness.

Stuff wise, fastball velo is the key. I've seen him sit 88-91, I've seen him sit 93-95. When he is the latter, like he was all of 2021, he is incredibly tough to handle with the vertical movement he is able to generate and the rest of his arsenal falls into place. When he is 88-91 his stuff flattens out and he gets hammered.

He adds in a slutter he likes to go to which is his trouble pitch right now, but is one of the pitches Cleveland has become notorious with on their development over the last decade. When he tosses a cement mixer it gets smashed, 85 on a tee. How he was able to give up almost 20 HRs in 117 IP last year while K'ing a ton of batters.

His curve is his best off speed pitch, IMO. Not a lot of horizontal break, but a good bit of vertical break and can be devastating when he adds a little extra velocity on it. Consistency is key with this pitch, think there needs to be some tightening up on it.

He also mixes in a solid but not spectacular change up which he likes to throw to lefties. Decent downward bite with some late run on it.

He is exactly what Cleveland looks for in a pitcher right now. Elite movement traits, strike throwing ability, multiple pitch arsenal that can be thrown in any count, smooth and simple mechanics that point to health longevity. Knowing the final few refinements he needs and them matching up with the systems strengths in development I feel like this is a good match between player and organization.

Those unfamiliar with a "slutter".. it's supposed to be a cross between a slider and a cutter...

Tyler Glasnow has a YouTube on it:
It's a cutter that has two plane movement..but a bit less than a Kluber slider...

The key to this is the tunneling of the pitch mix.. 2/3rds of the way to home plate.. and unless
a batter can pick up the spin or ball out of the hand action..he won't know which way the ball
is going to move..

there is no such thing as s clider.. fwiw..

Sounds a bit like a mini-Civale or am I way off? Don't know about the mechanics, but pitch mix and HR%

Civale was a fringe prospect too and they have an eye for those, so I'm cautiously optimistic with the new rotation law firm of Battenfield, Pilkington and Myers.

Myers was drafted in the 6th round in 2016 out of HS.

Had he gone to college instead, and put up the same numbers as he did in 2019 at A+, he probably would have been drafted a lot earlier....maybe 4th round of 2019?

At the moment, he is well ahead of Bieber, Civale, Quantrill, and Plesac at the same age. (I didn't say better...lol)

At age 22 Myers pitched in AA/AAA this year.

At 22, Bieber pitched in A/A+/AA.

Civale pitched in A/A+.

Plesac pitched in A-/A.

Quantrill pitched in A+/AA.

************
Myers has 58 IP in AAA.

At the time they hit MLB, these guys had...

Bieber...48.2 IP.
Civale....42.1
Plesac...26.1
Quantrill ....66.2.

Circumstances differ for every team and prospect, but Myers should be ready sometime in 2022....if there is an opening.
